Mish, this one had that 'wow' factor for me.

I finished my last for the April challenge and was disappointed in it I'm afraid - The Power of Bones by Keelen Mailman 2★s

Good honest review, Brenda. Don't think I'll bother with this one :)

I am enjoying this very much for the story but I am a bit OCD and picking up a few typos & ?inconsistencies (or maybe not, we'll see at the end.)

That's so annoying, isn't it. Makes you want to get out the red pen!
I am in the middle of Wake by Elizabeth Knox. She is a New Zealand author who wrote the superb books The Vintner's Luck and The Angel's Cut. This book is very different and a bit horrific. But I am enjoying it very much. Her NZ settings are lovely.

Mortal Instruments by John Malcolm
Mortal Instruments by John Malcolm
Or she might mean The Mortal Instruments Boxed Set: City of Bones; City of Ashes; City of Glass by Cassandra Clare

I'm interested in this book, would love to hear what you think of it, Bette.
By the way, did you finish the last Outlander book? Was series withdrawal intervention needed? :-) I may need it soon myself, I'm on book 13 of 14 of the Wheel of Time series, which I've been reading off and on for a few years. It's all getting very exciting now, so I'll definitely move straight on to the last book, A Memory of Light, and then it will be ... over! *Sniff* I have endured series withdrawal before! but this one may be especially tough!

Sally, alas I think The Tournament has been incorrectly shelved as 'historical fiction'. It is merely a murder set in 1500s; the entire story has a non-factual premise but Reilly does not really describe places or people. I know you love hist-fiction and have no hesitation in saying don't bother with this one. As a murder story, it's okay but definitely not historical fiction.
I finished Wake by Elizabeth Knox. I recommend this author highly - she writes beautifully.

No, I'll just email the publisher when I'm done with lots of compliments to the author followed with a "but you might want to fix this before the next reprint". It is certainly a gripping read.

Thanks, Bette, I don't think I'll bother with this book, then. Seeing as I already have 500 or so on my TBR ;-)

Bette I haven't read it but my son who is reading it says that there is quite a lot of historical research in it but I think you're right and GR has made a mistake classifying it as Historical Fiction. According to the publisher, Hatchette and how we sell it at work it's classed more as a Mystery/Thriller.
I finished Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant last night (all ready now for the ABC's Bookclub on Tuesday night)

Yes, there are lots of historical people feathtured: Elizabeth 1, the Ottoman Sultan Sulieman, the great teacher Roger Acsram and a couple of others but no great factual historical moments. Nor does Reilly really bother to describe places, dress etc.
A good historical novel (for me) is normally linked to a moment/time in history and the scenes are usually quite fully described so that you can really see the scenes.

Elaine, the title really intrigues me - I look forward to hearing your final thoughts on the book, as the reviews seem really divided.

Yes you have been reading heavy stuff Elaine! Enjoy:)

Valerie I'm almost half way through it now and I just can't fault it. It just gets better and although a slightly far fetched story line is an enjoyable, fast paced read with some laugh out loud moments and one I can't wait to get back to. Honestly I don't understand the 1 star reviews as to me this is looking like a 4-5 star read and I haven't even finished it yet!!! Everyone I know who has read it has really enjoyed it.
I finished Red Sand Sunrise by Fiona McArthur which was absolutely wonderful! A very emotional read in places, but so worth the read. It's not published until 25th June, so my review will have to wait until closer to then. 4.5★s

Another one to add to my TBR. Look forward to your review, Brenda :)

Well it's good that this book is helping you...I will also be interested in yours and Kathryn's thoughts as it's a book I've thought about!

Ok thanks Elaine. I think I'll add it to the list!

Valerie, we all like different things of course and that's why, personally I believe that you need to try out books, just like movies, for yourself. I think this one is quite a different, unique type of book and for that reason possibly has the mixed reviews. As I haven't finished it yet I shouldn't say too much more other than that I am really enjoying it!!! I'll look out for your views when and if you do get to it.

Personally I thought this book was pleasantly amusing and I enjoyed it very much. I think it suffered though for being over hyped. Maybe people were expecting too much from it and were therefore disappointed.

Yes that can happen sometimes Phrynne but I'm glad to say so far I have not been disappointed. Glad to hear you enjoyed it too.
