Could be Leonie...I just can't remember exactly what went wrong, but the change was so dramatic as to be (to my mind anyway) an insult to her readers. As I recall, I think there just seemed to be no real story, just a lot of words on pages. Awful I know, but I really was put off.

Also reading a great novel (so far) Beneath the Shadows by Sara Foster.

The Australian Heritage Cookbook is an absolutely beautiful book Dina! We have it here on our bookshelves:)

Beneath the Shadows is also one I really enjoyed when I read it! Sounds like you have good books wrapped around you:)

I received it for a birthday gift and was so happy, because I've been watching old Home and Away episodes from 1988, and the year of the cookbook matched that.

There's something about 1980's Australia that I love.

The Collected Works of A.J. Fikry

so, I just finished The Collected Works of A. J. Fikry. A 4.5 star book I think. I am not good at book reviews and rarely have the opportunity to talk with others about them, so forgive me. I loved this book, from beginning to end. The characters were lovely, funny, witty at times, heartbreaking and honest. This is not the sort of book I usually read, I picked it up because who doesn't want to read about a bookstore? Hope that helps. (Sorry it is late and I am on my phone typing this but no other opportunity available until Sunday night).

Kathryn | 3569 comments I've just finished The Silver Linings Playbook which I was half-expecting to find a tedious read, but I enjoyed it more than I had thought. I bought it over a year ago thinking the movie looked kind of interesting, although I wasn't actually sure I'd like it. But I never got around to seeing the movie, and then kept putting off reading the book, but I found it an interesting read after all. There is a bit of swearing, mostly by one character, I think, but it's not really excessive.

Dana | 144 comments I have just finished reading The Sandman and the War of Dreams, I just loved it. Has anyone else read any of The Guardian's series?
Nicholas St. North and the Battle of the Nightmare King by William Joyce E. Aster Bunnymund and the Warrior Eggs at the Earth's Core (Guardians of Childhood) by William Joyce Toothiana Queen of the Tooth Fairy Armies by William Joyce The Sandman and the War of Dreams by William Joyce
I have to admit that I do really enjoy reading children's books but these so far are my favourite. The books themselves are a joy to behold, hardcover editions with wonderful embossing down the spine, all the stories in the series have a different colour book. The dust jackets are divine. All the stories have wonderful illustrations that make them even more enjoyable. I am glad to say that it appears that there will be another 2 books before this series is finished, so it is not too late to start reading.

Not sure I will ever finish the paperboy as I can tell where it's going. Life is too short to waste on books that don't grab or amuse/enlighten me.

Phrynne, I've been reading, thinking, dreaming all things Fraser, lol. Admittedly, this is the first time I have ever read a series; whether this trait will continue with other author/series, I don't know. But Gabaldon does have me hook, line and sinker; I'm learning so much about early pioneering in the US. My knowledge of US history is pretty pitiful barring basic facts/people so the fact that she weaves in real events has been really good. I really love to learn while I read.

I just finished a book called Rainbow in the Mist by Phyllis A. Whitney. I only read it because I had to find a book with a rainbow on the cover to complete a challenge (the things we do). Any way it was published in 1989 and it was so nice and old fashioned.

I think if you go to Lee Child's Goodread's page it is apparent he has lots of fans. Obviously your taste in books is just different Adrian.

message 8598: by Adrian (new)

Adrian Deans (adriandeans) | 143 comments I'm not commenting specifically about Lee Child because I haven't read enough to know...but there's a style of crime writing (especially American) that really gets my goat - formulaic, predictable and relying on dysfunctional wisecracks to convey 'character'. Some of the most successful writers in world write like this, which I find tremendously sad.

I understand that it is the job of the writer to entertain, but to me entertainment is not just about non-stop action - it's about engaging the senses and intellect and even stretching the reader a little. I want to care about the characters and have an emotional investment in them - why else would I care what happens to fictional people?

I'll give it ten more pages to engage me.
