1989...old fashioned. Now I'm feeling old! The reading challenge sounds pretty fun. I'm curious what else was on this challenge.

The funny thing is I liked Elsewhere and I don't think I looked for other books by the author! I usually do. I have a massive list though (not on Good Reads). Maybe one of her books is on it, and I forgot that it's there.

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) I finished A Breath of Snow and Ashes Outlander #6 by Diana Gabaldon

My short review is at:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I've plunged immediately into An Echo in the BoneOutlander #7.

I have a feeling I may go into some type of withdrawal after I finished this series.

Ah...series withdrawal. That's a difficult state to be in. Then sometimes it's so hard to find something to fill that hole in my heart.

One good exercise in reminding yourself of that fact is to look at the 1 and 2 star reviews for a book that you love.

Yes only 25 years old. Nevertheless it was old fashioned in a very nice way. Like Jean Plaidy would be to Hilary Mantel.
The challenge was in another group and most of the other books needed were the more usual things like an Easter read, a memoir, a YA book etc.

Dana | 144 comments I have just finished Fury by Charlotte McConaghy it was (in my opinion) excellent. Fury is only available as a ebook, there are 3 short episodes, I picked up the first one for free and loved it so I purchased the omnibus edition for $2.99.
4 stars, a very pleasant surprise.

A short aside, this is the first book I have ever read on a Kindle Paperwhite (which I was given 6 months ago but steadfastly refused to use). A better experience than expected but I wish I could get my hands on a "real" copy of this. The only negative experience I had was a general feeling of not knowing where I stood, with a physical novel you can see how much you have left to go, you can flip around easily if need be. I guess it takes some getting used to. Does anyone else feel like they are floating in a sea of uncertainty when reading via an Ereader?

I'm with you Dana, but I do think they (e-readers) have a place and can be very handy for example, 3 pros and cons:
1. when you can't sleep, you can read in bed without the light on.
2. it fits easily into a handbag for those occasions where you find yourself having to wait somewhere...and nobody can see what your'e reading ;)
3. you can easily highlight, mark, look up, quote, and in some cases annotate for your reviews...without moving!
Cons:
1. the battery can go flat on you at just the wrong time :(
2. they can break if you fall asleep whilst reading and let it slide to the floor! ...or worse, break your toe! :@
3. All the things you said plus it doesn't feel, smell or look as pretty...and doesn't like to be hugged!

message 8610: by Dana (new)

Dana | 144 comments Julie, you are right, it totally was against a hug whereas all my books sitting on my bookshelves get annoyed if I don't hug them all the time. I picked up my ereader only because I was looking at ways to reduce the amount of stuff I carry to and from work on my bike. A large novel takes up a lot of room in my panniers. I have decided to try to have a book on the go on the ereader for convenience, but most likely I will stick to buying the cheap stuff, if I am forking out big money I want book joy not digital joy.

It's a bit like the transition from records, or albums as we called them, to cd's...though many here might not remember! It used to be a real big deal to go out in search of your most desired record and one could spend hours making a choice. Then bring it home...hugging all the way...and settle down (usually on the floor) to play it whilst spending delightful hours reading the bibliography and looking at the beautiful cover...most often a shared experience with friends. Sometimes there was a full sized folded poster included in the sleeve! Many of the covers told their own stories and were a prize in themselves...very collectible still :)
Ahhh but I digress :)
Dana you might need to get a backpack.

I NEVER want books to be old school, THAT would be a dystopian future, but I can see you felt the same way about records.

I'm curious...was she against or in defense of modified foods?

I've read some of her books, but not that one yet. Maybe I won't.

When I read the first one or two, I liked them. But then that formula got old to me. I don't read a lot of serial offender/detective fiction. Do you? Are they usually similar to that?

Series withdrawal: and think how long Diana Gabaldon spent writing each book and how quickly you devoured each one! We readers are such a greedy lot, as I have said before to authors. We are immediately "What's next?" Are you going to read all the Lord John series?

I do often feel like the Dicken's character saying: "More, please." lol:)

I've read 3 so far of the Lord John books; not as appealing as the Outlander series. But since Gabaldon reveals much more of Grey's character in the later Outlander books, I am getting to like him a lot more. I have to track down the rest via inter-library loan.

Diana Gabaldon is a little like Donna Tartt/Richard Russo in that it's quite a while between books but when she does publish one, you can be sure they are pretty marvellous.

I find I am drawn to authors who take pause between books; I am put off by an author who writes a new book every say 18 months because I feel they are quite formulaeic.

Oh she's against it, but it wasn't her viewpoint that bothered me. It's just that there's too much of it!
As regards formula I think all genres have that. However some authors handle the formula much better than others. I do read a lot of crime fiction and there are some really good writers of it. Kathryn Fox is one of them. I think she just dropped the ball a little in this book.

Sorry. I did a horrible job at expressing myself. I didn't think you were against the book because you disagreed with her opinion. I was just curious what her opinion was.

I think my problem with formulas is I get tired of them if I read a lot of the same type of books in a row. I'll get into that type of book; then I'll get burned out. I think that's what happened with me and Kathryn Fox.

On the other hand though, if it's a series and I take long breaks between the books (to avoid burnout) I forget the characters and past events. I end up lost and confused.

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9975 comments I just finished The Visitors which heavily concerns King Tut's tomb and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Now I'm reading The Lost Wife and I've just passed a bit where one of the main characters takes his grandson to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and they check out the Egyptian exhibit. I find this happens to me a lot: I've just read a book about something, or mentioning something, then it is mentioned in the next book I read, completely unexpectedly. Does this happen to anyone else? Or is it simply that I notice that mention because I read about it in the previous book, like when you think of someone and then they phone. Really coincidence because all the people you have also thought about don't ring you up, but you don't notice that. What do you think?
