message 8417: by Kathryn (last edited Apr 10, 2014 01:15AM) (new)

Kathryn | 3569 comments I'm reading Sarah Thornhill by Kate Grenville and The Zookeeper's Wife by Diane Ackerman at the moment. They both felt a bit ordinary after the extraordinary writing in The Street Sweeper by Elliot Perlman which Elaine and I read together, and to make matters worse, The Zookeeper's Wife is about a similar period in history (pre-, during and post-WWII) and looking at a similar people group (Jews) in the same country (Poland) as The Street Sweeper, but without the beautiful writing, so I've put it aside for the moment as the temptation to make (unfavourable) comparisons was too great. And I found it easier to get back into Sarah Thornhill, which I am now enjoying. Will continue with The Zookeeper's Wife once I've finished.

I'm also listening to Kerry Greenwood's Blood and Circuses while at the gym for some light relief and am definitely enjoying that!

Yes Marianne, I think I got a bit jealous of all your bargains and decided to check some out, best bit was that I have donated so many books to this little shop in the past that he marked everything down to $2 for me!! I felt a bit guilty but he was happy....and he will probably get them back again anyway, win win ;-)

Neko I've finished a few books this week (very pleased with this).. After Cleo by Helen Brown , The Boys, Volume 6 The Self-Preservation Society by Garth Ennis .

I have been stopping and starting The Teahouse Fire by Ellis Avery something about it isn't quite grabbing my attention hence all the starts and stops. I started it last year and only restarted reading it on the weekend...I think it's a book that I just need to do bulk reading sessions otherwise I will keep stop and starting it :|

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) It will be no surprise to you all that I've started Outlander #4 Drums of Autumn by Diana Gabaldon

I'll be in a real story/character depression when I finish this series.

message 8442: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 3569 comments I've thought about reading Outlander before now, or at least adding it to my TBR list, but I haven't yet. Seeing how much Bette's loving the series takes me a little closer to adding it...

I've just started The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Rachel Joyce - I'm about 4 chapters in and I can tell it's the kind of book I will enjoy. I've chuckled at some things, but other parts are quite sad.

message 8443: by Carolyn (last edited Apr 12, 2014 07:24PM) (new)

Carolyn | 9840 comments I've also started reading a book about a long walk in Britain, Walking Home: A Poet's Journey by Simon Armitage, for the April challenge.
The author is a poet who decides to undertake the 256 mile Pennine Way - a challenging walk down the centre of Britain, starting from the north and ending near his home in the south. To make it more interesting he takes no money but relies on nightly poetry readings to fund himself. As well as the scenery, some wild and beautiful and some quite desolate, the book is as much about the people he meets along the way who walk with him or who give him a room for the night. Very enjoyable so far.

I am now reading Tournament by Matthew Reilly. Hope to finish it quickly so I can read some Carmody and Forsyth.

Deb | 219 comments Mesmerizing is a good word to use with Kate Forsyth's name. It is such a treat being able to listen to authors. Just opens up the book for readers.

I wonder if they ever get tired of talking about their books or answering the same questions over and over. Guess it depends on the audience.
