Excellent review Adrian. I found myself agreeing with you on many points and I strongly agree with you regarding your major issue. Personally I spent almost 10 years ( when I first read it) dealing with it.

I have to say that I'm completely baffled that GR lists The Lieutenant with the other two Thornhill books see https://www.goodreads.com/series/8203... I've read all three and can't remember any connection between the Thornhills and the Lieutenant. Can anyone enlighten me?

Thanks Elaine, I'm already aware it's one of those books that will stay with me a very long time. As a writer myself, I can't help but analyse a writer's plot choices in order to anticipate the conclusion, and the clues were all pointing to what I guessed in my review...but then all the tiny machinations were simply swept aside by a conclusion so obvious I didn't quite see it coming, but maybe going to a whole new level of poignancy. Am I disappointed, or have I just been taught something by a master? I'll be pondering quite a while.

Marianne, they are a trilogy - this is from the blurb on Kate Grenville's website for The Lieutenant: "The Lieutenant is the second book in a trilogy of novels by Kate Grenville about early Australia (the others are The Secret River and Sarah Thornhill)...It's a story about today as much as about yesterday - the issues it explores are still with us. How do we value difference, and how do we learn to communicate across it? How do we learn to listen as well as speak?"

I admit I was surprised to find that The Secret River and The Lieutenant were linked since there are no linkages of the same characters within the 2 books, but I read somewhere (can't remember where now) that they are about the same issue (native Australians and British settlers trying to co-exist together) and about 2 different approaches to 2 different cultures arriving at some kind of "agreement". (view spoiler)

message 8325: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 3569 comments However, Sarah Thornhill does follow on from characters in The Secret River. I've just started it and am enjoying it so far...

message 8326: by Marianne (new)

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9975 comments OK, I see what you mean, but in my book (sorry about the pun) a trilogy needs to be related by more than themes or concepts. Secret River and Sara Thornhill: definitely part of a series; Lieutenant will always sit separately in my spreadsheet, no matter what Kate Genville says on her website.........
Thanks for the info, though, Kathryn, interesting. I loved all three books.

LOL Bette,

I wondered what time you'd get up today....
even if you had remembered your clock, bodies & clocks don't necessarily work together: I woke at the usual time and had to tell myself to go back to sleep for an hour!

No, I'm just awake all night then:( While I'd love a good long sleep, I don't really mind being awake so early excepting that no-one else is usually awake. I shouldn't complain; it does give me a time to be on GR that doesn't interfere with other things I like to do.
