Vicki, it's a really powerful book; I was so unprepared for how involved I would feel.

Sally Howes | 223 comments I just finished A Memory of Light, the final book in a series I've been reading for YEARS. There aren't enough superlatives to describe how much I loved this book - I get teary just thinking about it! 5★ for sure - it deserves many more than just five. I feel quite bereft now that I have no more Wheel of Time books to read, but so very glad and privileged to have read them.

Good morning, Vicki and thanks. I had to take a few deep breaths when I finished it. It made me feel sad, ashamed, outraged, proud, angry and relieved all at the same time. So thankful I was born here some 20 years later and will never have to go thru or see this sort of thing in real life.

It's primarily a YA book which is good. I think the youth of today should know this stuff actually happened so they can make sure it never happens again.

Sally I am slowly making my way through the series on audiobook. I finished The Path of Daggers this morning while walking my dog! It was getting really exciting when it stopped so I must get the next one ready to start tomorrow.

I'm also reading Winter of the World by Ken Follett and struggling here. Find Follett's narration too dry or emotionless or stilted??? Too something, anyhow.

Carolyn | 9840 comments I've bought a ticket to go and listen to Elanor Catton next week at the Sydney Writer's Festival, so thought I'd better post my review of The Luminaries before then: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I really enjoyed the book, even though it took me three weeks to read since it was too big to cart with me on my daily train ride to work so I had to make do with nightly half hour instalments before going to sleep. Not quite sure why I don't want to give it 5★, although I'd settle for 4.5★. Perhaps because in the end the story is a reasonably simple murder mystery in an interesting setting, albeit full of interesting characters and brilliantly told.

Well it's a bit more of a trip for you Brenda. Plus you have to buy tickets for most events and it sounds as if you have a really good writers festival in Newcastle.

Yes our festival was great this year, and that's one of the main reasons I decided not to go:) I remember a couple of years ago, we caught the train at 6am, didn't get there until 8.30am, spent all day at the festival and didn't get home till around 8pm that night! Boy, that was a long day!

Bette, have you read The Pillars of the Earth? I much preferred that and its sequel, World Without End to the two World War books Fall of Giants and Winter of the World. I agree that his style is very dry and unadorned, but I found the stories and characters in the Pillars books more engrossing. Oh, and did you read Fall of Giants before Winter of the World? They are meant to be read in that order as the characters and their stories carry over from the first book to the second, although it's not crucial. Winter of the World CAN be read as a stand-alone book, but I preferred Fall of Giants anyway and it made me care more about the characters in Winter of the World.

My sister begged me to read The Pillars of the Earth when she saw I was watching the television series, but it didn't because I was already involved in the series, which I thought was terrific. I do hope to read the book one day though because even the series left me wanting more for some time...that hangover you know.
