Amber Martingale Tina, I have my headphones today, so here is your "Welcome to the Family" URL: Rhapsody Of Fire - Lord Of The Thunder (HQ): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQ0fS...

P.K., did I give you a "Welcome to the Family" URL? I forgot if I did or not. Sorry.

P.K. Davies | 549 comments Hi Jeff, welcome to Newbies Corner. Being a therapist is a good hand to have when writing crime novels. Motivation is the one scientific element in criminal behaviour - so you have a head start.

Vicky | 2 comments Hi Everyone! My name is Vicky and I live in upstate New York. I am a scientist and I work at Cornell University. I love thrillers so much that I write a review blog just on thrillers. The general theme of the blog is thrillers that are in a series that also have an element of science to it. Some of my favorites are James Rollins, Jeffery Deaver, and Preston/Child. If you are interested in learning a little science along with some fun thrillers just stop on by at A-Thrill-A-Week.

Lorrea - WhatChaReadin'? (whatchatreadin) Welcome Jeff and Vicky!!!

P.K. Davies | 549 comments Hi Vicky. I checked out your website; it is very impressive. I love the artwork and clean typography. You really are a crime geek aren't you? I sampled a few of your reviews and you have a nice balance between your own preferences and what other readers might want to know. I think it's about time you got to writing your own novels; I would love to read one. I'll visit you again.

P.K. Davies | 549 comments Thanks Amber. Not sure I appreciated that too much; very clever but not rivetting. Question; How do you get around the Music Copyright laws? I'm pretty dumb about musical affairs but isn't it supposed to be illegal passing on recorded music?

message 7568: by Sean, Moderator (new)

Sean Peters | 10517 comments Mod
No they are fee if they are added to you tube.

It is a good way of artists sharing their music and gain millions of hits.

I am sure Amber will explain more

message 7569: by Amber (last edited Apr 11, 2017 10:41AM) (new)

Amber Martingale No I won't Sean., as I don't know any more about it than you do! All I can tell P.K. is that I didn't make ANY of these videos on my playlists. And I only know one YouTuber personally. He made a 24 second video called Trump is Dumb, using video from Trump's campaign and audi from Spongebob Squarepants. message 7572: by Tim (new)

Tim Smith P.K., there are times that the copyright owners of music will allow the use of the music in videos on YouTube as long as advertising is permitted with the video and the copyright owner receives montetization from the video. That happened in a video that I recently made where I used a 30 second snippet of a song. Also, several copyright holders that put videos on YouTube including playlists of entire albums. I have noticed that a lot more lately. They want people to share the links for these videos to encourage others to purchase their music. It is a form of free advertising for them.

message 7573: by P.K. (new)

P.K. Davies | 549 comments Hi Tim. As you would have noticed, I know nothing about this. I only proposed the question with tongue in cheek because I did know that the music industry have for long been worried by the unauthorised sharing of their work. My guess would be that if an artist(s) put their work on You Tube they would be deemed to have
given permission for it to be shared having chosen an online distribution and, as you say, there is probably some sort of rule to allow for that. But music sharing online must be restricted surely?
Take the case of what we know about; if an author's work is sent to a multi audience online without the author's or publisher's permission that would be a breach of copyright wouldn't it. Otherwise Amazon publishing would be out of business.
Perhaps there are other experts out there to join the topic

message 7574: by Paula (new)

Paula Adams (goodreadscompadams57) | 1590 comments I only share videos that are on YouTube and it's usually oldies from the 60's and 70's.

message 7575: by P.K. (new)

P.K. Davies | 549 comments Then I don't think you'll be locked-up, Paula. But Copyright does last seventy years in Us and Uk. So even Doris Day might get mad.

Paula Adams (goodreadscompadams57) | 1590 comments I only share them on here under the thread What are you listening to?

message 7577: by P.K. (new)

P.K. Davies | 549 comments It's okay. Don't be scared. I'm not the web-police. I haven't sampled What are you listening to yet. But if you're a music afficianado I will ask you a question. Amber sent me a piece, Spongebob Squarepants. I think it is a sort of rap, the words were very clever but the music was terrible. It made me wonder if it would be possible to do rap to Mozart. What do you think?

message 7578: by Amber (last edited Apr 11, 2017 10:51AM) (new)

Amber Martingale Don't know about that one, P.K., but I do have (somewhere) a clip of a folk metal band from Kazakhstan called Ulytau. And they do fabulous renditions of classical music, including Mozart's Rondo alla Turca. I know it's not even close, to a rap set to Mozart but it's still interesting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3nzm...

The same band also has an interesting rendition of J.S. Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4viq8... I also have a live performance of this rendition somewhere in my playlists.

But one of my favorites is a song called The Bloody Verdict of Verden, but the late great Sir Christopher Lee as Charlemagne: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvKRb...
And that one's in a genre called Symphonic Power Metal. RIP Sir Christopher Lee.

P.K. Davies | 549 comments Amber, you are educating me in the most delightful way. They were all terrific. I had no idea Heavy Metal could be so good. Years ago, when Metal was in its infancy, I lent my flat to a band who were developing the style. They went off with several items of family archives. I didn't like metal after that - but I suppose thieving was part of the anarchist style.
I have also had a long association with The Royal College of Music in London. This is the premier music school of the UK and I am in touch still with its intake of new students so you are giving me links to pass on to them that will broaden their education. Thank you; I loved all of those.
Where do you get this endless list of videos? I think this is probably Enticement; you want me to hold your hand in gaol.
Luv ya baby.

It's called being curious and raised by a family that told me that if I liked it, I should listen to i...though that LAST part gave them a lot of headaches when I was going through my "snot nosed, rebellious teenager" phase starting in 6th grade. Re: Where I find the vids.

Basically, I start with an artist I already like, like Rhapsody of Fire or The Beach Boys and then I search for other bands that are in the same genre. If I find a song I MIGHT be interested in, I listen to it. If I like it, I add it to one of my playlists. Or two, if I also add it to my Favorites list.

Another way I find the vids, is by watching the watchmojo.com Top 10 vids. For example, these two I found via the watchmojo.co Top 10 Frontwomen in Hard Rock and Metal vid. 1: Storm the Sorrow: Epica: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNoTv...

2. Within Temptation: Mother Earth: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AF4oX...

The Within Temptation song, like the ones by Rhapsody of Fire, fall into the sub genre of the power metal sub genre known as SYMPHONIC power metal. So did the Sir Christopher Lee song about Charlemagne. That said, most symphonic power metal bands have women for lead vocalists, rather than men, like Fabio Lione of Rhapsody of Fire. Another example of that tradition is Nightwish. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8gXz... I think this was originally a folk song.

This is the link to where I found some of the songs I've just mentioned, P.K.: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-eBw...

Here's another vid for folk metal: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBmeP...

Hi, Holly. Your "Welcome to the Family" URL is Halestorm - Familiar Taste of Poison [Official Video]: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lHZKP... This is one of the songs that was clipped in the watchmojo.com vid I told P.K. about.

message 7587: by P.K. (new)

P.K. Davies | 549 comments Thanks Amber, that's very interesting and fascinating and I'll certainly be tasting the links you have kindly sent; my music education has been rather one dimensional. Before the vids did you dowload stuff onto your i-player, or tapes, or even buy vynil? Do you know how big your collection is and how do you store everything?
In my novel Getting Tyson, the main baddy character is listening to The Beach Boys when fate hits him in the form of two teenagers in a stolen car. He is Big Dave, six foot five and 240 pounds. It was a little way of saying we are all full of contrasts.

Hi Holly, welcome to the chat. I may be able to offer some help with Wordpress. I did my own site through them. It seems a lot of people don't even format their own books. I just have to try everything myself so I did my book and even the cover. We don't want to bore everybody with technicalities so I'm sure the lovely mods will be able to pass on my email link.

message 7588: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale Didn't need to buy vinyl, P.K. My parents had quite a few old records, so I listened to those, when I didn't feel like the radio or a CD or audio tapes. I grew up before the advent of the iPod. I was born in 1978.

message 7589: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) We recently got rid of 90% of Dad's (still miss him!) massive classical music collection (vinyl!). We were lucky enough to discover a librarian whose husband teaches band at one of the local middle schools! So great that they went to a good home!

message 7590: by Tim (new)

Tim Smith Amber, I graduated high school in 1978. I do collect vinyl. I have around 2,000 albums and between 250 and 300 45's. They are mainly from the 60's - 80's along with a few from the 50's.

message 7591: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale Unfortunatly, the ones we had left after moving to Phoenix from Scottsdale were given away when Mom and I moved BACK to Illinois in 2003, so I forgot what happened to them.

message 7592: by P.K. (new)

P.K. Davies | 549 comments Wow, Tim; what a collection. I have quite a few but I would need a whole room for that lot. How often do you listen to them?
Kirsten, you should have waited. Over here (UK) vynil is the latest thing and they are bringing very good prices, especially if the sleeves are in good condition.
Amber, you are so lucky to have parents that gave you something to love for the rest of your life. Enjoy.

message 7593: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) P.K. - We were more interested that they went to a good home. My dad was always encouraging young people to make something of their life, to get a good education.

message 7594: by Tim (new)

Tim Smith P.K., I listen to them some daily. I can't read as well in a quiet room so I usually have something playing in the background.

message 7595: by P.K. (new)

P.K. Davies | 549 comments Kirsten, you were obviously lucky with your parents too. Music can educate, especially if it's used with biography of the great artists.
Tim, I know what you mean; I like writing with a vynil playing quietly behind me. Classical music can be a great help and an aid to stress. My lover was Beethoven's Pastoral symphony. I would get home after a shitty day and that would soon calm me down and make me smile again.
A good question to everyone; What is your bolthole when you are feeling low or stressed?
