Shreemayi asked:

okay so can anyone tell me how old a child should be to read this book?

Vladimir Mityukov You just start the first book at 11, then add one book a year. Follow Harry ;-)
István I'm a 35 year old child reading it right now. :)

Meredith I was seven when I first read it, and I don't feel like I missed out on any of the themes or anything, nor was I particularly disturbed or confused. Yes, it has heavy topics, but having grown up with the series I feel like it's important for children to read about heavy topics if they understand them. Complex story lines and ideas shouldn't exclude children, if the individual child is ready for it.
Michael Vincent Givens Well I'm ten right now, but I'm in the 4'th Grade. So, I started reading it maybe when I was 8 or 9. But I know an 2'nd Grader in my school, who I convinced to read it, now he says he enjoys it. So I'm kinda saying Harry Potter is the best series I've read in ten years. So, anybody can enjoy it!!
Elisabeth Hobbes I've read up to book 3 with my 9 and 7 year old and we're taking a break before going on to number 4 as it gets a lot darker. My 7yo didn't sleep for 3 nights because she thought Buckbeak had been executed so I don't want to go any further yet. This one is where it suddenly gets a lot darker. I think we'll pick it up in 6 months or so.
Shruti the one who reads this book surely forget their age
Jessie i started it when i was nine and read it again when i was eleven and i would read it again now so i think it's anywhere from mabe seven and up
Addison Dixon I'd say 15 and up. Maybe 14. It's more of a young adult book if anything. Plus it depends on how mature the child is.
Charley It aslo depends on their lex and age.
I read the 4 books so far and I am in 6th Grade ELA honours
I read the first 2 in 4th grade. I know a 1st grader who read the read the frist Harry Potter book.
so it all depends.
Kailie I believe that this book is good for all ages. A child would see the magic and simple problems like no one believing Harry that Voldemort is really back, but someone a bit older would see the messages deeper within the text.
Deirdre Well I don't think it has anything to do with age. I mean the only thing the kid would be calling people is " Muggle!"-like I do. ;) but I think being 10 and up and at least having an efficient vocabulary would help you more. The author writes in a fashion where anyone can understand what she'd talking about. It's not like they are going to be reading "A tale of Two Cities" or anything.

I hope this helped-remeber 10 or older! :)
el Well lets say you have read the 1st-4th books. Then you should be about 7 at the youngest because if a parent is not reading the book to them if they are under 7 then it may be hard to follow. I suggest 9 years old
Isha I read the books in 1st grade. I was fine with it. I think it's better to read younger so their imagination takes over.
Megan I started reading the series when I was eight. I got this book to read when it came out, making me ten. I don't feel like I was too young for it. That being said, it depends on the child, maybe try and compare to movies your kid watches.
mayla ray I read this when i was around 9 and I couldn’t put it down. In my opinion this book doesn’t include any inappropriate content that couldn’t be handled by an eight year old, but it depends on the child and their maturity level. I recommend an seven year old age rating.
Iris || readby_ash okay, two ways you can start book one when you are 11 and read one book a year, so you are the same age as harry, or you can read the first three books when you are 8-10 and the rest when you are 11+
Michelle King Vosloo I would say, about the age of the characters would be appropriate.
This book, Harry turns 15 years old so I would say 13?
Barbara Atkin 14, 15, 16...no younger. Certainly older.
Ayesha About 10 to 14 it has a lot of emotional conflict and self conflict that Harry has to overcome in order to help the other students teachers and his friends.
Camilla Tilly In one way, kids are very advanced in this day and age. And most kids have already seen the films, with or without parents' knowledge. But I can say that a friend's autistic daughter reacted really badly after reading the later books secretly and started acting out in school. So it really is up to the child's emotional level. Maybe only a 15-year -old can REALLY understand what goes through these kids' brains? Since that is the age of Harry & company in the book. As a mother, I would say: DO NOT LET A DEPRESSED AND BULLIED CHILD READ THIS BOOK! It does not really give such a child any hope. Not till the end anyway and most could not get that far, if they recognise themselves in the book! It is just too dark! I am a grown up and felt very, very ill at ease.
Stella Farmer 10 11 12 year olds usually read it. I read it when I was 10-11. I'd say if your not the best reader, then maybe 13 and up
Bipasha Gayary You can see that the first book in the series- The Sorcerer's stone was about when Harry Potter was 11 years old so you can read the books if you are 11 years or older.
Caito Junqueira The saga was written loosely targeting Harry Potter's age in each book. The stories and vocabulary gain in complexity as the series goes on.

Book 1 = 11y.o.
Book 2 = 12y.o.
...
Book 5 = 15y.o.

And so on.

Keep in mind that this is not a tight rope around your neck. The first books actually work for younger people, and old adults can also enjoy everything.
Kaylene I feel like eight is an appropriate age. I would suggest even younger, but they may not understand all of the concepts or language in the book. The book is definitely a children's book and is appropriate for very young children in my opinion. In book four and on there is some violence, but not graphic. No strong language or inappropriate content besides some violence. I definitely recommend it!
kassidy brooks I read the series in 3rd grade and I was only seven!
Afriel I started when I was 8 but enjoyed it more when I reread it when I became 10. I think the closer you are to the character's age, the more you enjoy it because you understand it more. Depends on who you ask
Hanna I guess my mother started reading them to me when I was six or seven and I was nine when the last book came out and read it right away. My babysitting kid was also nine when she finished the last book and she doesn't like things that are too scary. I guess looking back the books 5-7 seem pretty dark, but I know that as a kid they didn't seem that way to me and I had a pretty good filter and some of the scary parts only registered when I was older. I think that's part of the value of the books - they have something for every age group and the more you read them and the older you get, the more you see and learn and appreciate the different aspects :) I'd say: as early as your kid wants and just stop if it does get too scary and continue some later time.
Serena Q I read the whole series when I was 7 or so by myself, it was sooooooooooooo good😎😎😎😎
Nawin Pokharel I plan to read it now.
QVOR old enough .....................................................................................................

Hope I would say a little over 10 just because of some inappropriate jokes in it.
Sofia For me it can be read at any age but I think 12 can be good
madeline my mom read it to me when i was 6 so i think you can at any age
Eshaal Minhaj Well I started at nine
Luna It is very good for 10-15
Sofia Villarreal i started reading the harry potter series in 3rd grade and i certainly do not regret it :) .I recommend these books to any age between 7 and up.And honestly, if you have a child and they start reading the series and they end up liking it, well im pretty sure they will really enjoy reading in the future! Also watch out because I stayed up VERY late reading these books lol.
Noah Burgos

Noah Burgos However old they are when they finish goblet of fire
Ashley Lin 9 years old and I'm reading it
Sasicha Sanguansub I first read it when I'm 12. I read it again when I'm 17 so I can see and understand the hidden point. I mean any age but this is too hard for me in 12 to understand something. You know. Different perspective.
Femke I find that it is a pretty difficult book maybe for a young child, it's like the books grow older the further you get into the series. Witch is nice, because i'm 20 now and i still found it exciting, scary, fun and entertaining. I wouldn't have been able to read it when i was 10 but of course every child is different! I just find that there are a few very scary ( and bloody) scènes and also a few difficult topics (like losing someone and trauma) that i would probably not have understand at a young age. If i had to put an age on this book i would say 13-14 years.
Amber Smith no age it's the best book I've ever read
in fact, the whole series is awesome
but it does say shut up and things like that
Sandra I first read it when I was about 11 but I guess it really depends who is reading.
Brooke W It depends on the readers level and you should be at least 7 or 8
Talia I started reading the series a few months ago when I was 9
VoltronGreenPaladin Well, it does include death, crushes, and some other more mature topics. I really just think that it depends on how well a kid can handle this.
Ashley Fanz I stared reading it when I was seven or nine i mean it has some kissing and blood but it's not bad
Anna I honestly don't know. I read The Sorcerer's Stone at age 6, and loved it, maybe that was because I read so much. I think it depends on your favorite books and general reading experience. What I mean is - if you haven't read any books that deal with death and violence, then this is something you should not yet read. It is amazing, though, and my favorite Harry Potter book.
cecília My sister read it when she was nine and she loved it. But I think it depends on the person
Akshita Pandey You can read this book at any age because this is meant for all sorts of readers of different ages be it kids or adults or senior citizens.
Meiley I'm 11 I found it to have nothing inappropriate but it did take me 2-3 months to read
Alexia Pizza they have to be old enough to realize there is no happy endings in stories
Connie Clark I used to say match the age to the book but the teen years are hard to live through so reading about it too, may be too much. I suggested one student take a break for a year and then read one year behind his age. That worked well. However, many of my second grade students read the first book that year when they were 8 and loved it. Most people read them over again and understand more as they age.

emma well i read it just before my birthday, when i was 10
Grace Wright I'd say nine or older.
Rochelle I was eleven years old when it was published, and I read it immediately (naturally, as I was in the midst of growing up with the series). I wouldn't say I comprehended the weight of everything properly at that age, but it wasn't too dark or heavy for me. Then again, not every 11 year old is of the same maturity level :) I imagine it's tricky for parents now deciding when to start reading the books to their children, as the entire series is available at once.
Cassandra If you want to be able to discuss such topics I would say high school and up, these should be the sort of issues that high school aged kids should be learning about. However, if you just want to read the book and not worry about certain themes I would say any age.
Varsha Suman When I read it as a child, I remember having nightmares about corridors for weeks... now when I read it, I wonder how much of it I understood back then. You can read this at any age, according to me, but you will read a different story with every re-read.
Nessa I would say over 12, I read it when I was aroud that age.
FA Depends on how mature the child is. And you should think about the 'dealing with a death of loved one' thing because I, who lost 2 of my siblings in a very young age, was really really sad when I first finish reading the book. I'm not going to bother giving all the reasons why I felt this way unless you ask me to. But, as I said before, you should thinks about how mature the kid is and how was her/his past. It's not the that they wouldn't understand it but being a little depressed if something similar happened to them. All in all, you may want to wait a little more before making your kids read the book.
Mon 9 or 10 for the general story, but to truly understand what's going on I'd say 13 and up.
Dris Tyagi I say 9 ish, by it mostly depends on the child.
Aki Tsuchiya I was about 9 when I read Harry Potter.
Katie There is definitely some cursing in this book, so if you don't want your kid reading those words I would think about that. Other than that the biggest issue is the idea of terrorism and death, and I think that really just depends on the kid. Personally, I wouldn't probably give this book to a kid until they were at least 13, but it looks like I'm in the minority there. I think kids are pretty good about not taking books as seriously as we adults do.
Shannon McEwen children should be 8 or older because there is some violence in the book

-Shannon McEwen
Katherine Verm My dad started reading the Sorcerer's Stone to me when I was in first grade, but I didn't pick up the other books until 3rd grade. ( I was 9) the books grow in maturity as the series progresses so the topics in the 7th book are much heavier than in the first book. this series does have some heavy topics but I understood all of them. Age wise I would say anywhere from 9-14 depending on maturity.
Melissa I was about 8 or 9 when I read it, so I guess ages 7-14
Eric I too read this book when I was seven and it was easy to understand and I loved the book and have reread it multiple times as a child.Although it does depend on how old the child is and if they are very mature.
Jo I read it when I was young. I think you need to be at least 3rd grade and you should not have any problems with violence, but I have read it twice and I love it.
