My babysitting kid was also nine when she finished the last book and she doesn't like things that are too scary. I guess looking back the books 5-7 seem pretty dark, but I know that as a kid they didn't seem that way to me and I had a pretty good filter and some of the scary parts only registered when I was older. I think that's part of the value of the books - they have something for every age group and the more you read them and the older you get, the more you see and learn and appreciate the different aspects :) I'd say: as early as your kid wants and just stop if it does get too scary and continue some later time.(less)
