That Popular Science tag is hard because some of the books in those PS lists don't have it on the main page but they've been tagged by lots of readers.

We've done the Crayolas now we're on Tower Teams spell outs and there are lots of everything needed, I think. Check out the spreadsheet.

I picked up The Age Of Innocence in an Op Shop yesterday for $1. Along with three other $2 books for a grand total of $7. One is a thick Marion Keyes with a purple cover. I'll get to that in July.

35559 The book I’m reading now is listed with the wrong cover. It took me ages to find the right edition. For the Sake of Elena (Inspector Lynley #5) by Elizabeth George . This is the edition I have— correct publisher, ISBN, pages etc but wrong cover. My cover is the same as the hardback For the Sake of Elena (Inspector Lynley, #5) by Elizabeth George
Interestingly my paperback has about 100 pages more than the hardback.

35559 Gosh, only 1 for me. I've read Daisy Jones and the Six and didn't like it at all so I was put off her other books. I added Lessons In Chemistry to my Want to Read shelf just now because I read an interview with the author this afternoon. I think I should give those Sarah Maas books a try too.

Julius is a remarkable creation. He's ruthless, supremely selfish
and incapable of love or empathy but Du Maurier is such a terrific storyteller I just had to keep reading.

35559 That said, crime stories can rely on massive lies or misdirection so could be an easy find as well. We expect criminals to lie. Agatha Christie could be the go for that.

With my romance author hat on, I agree. When I started out on the road to publication that was one of the big no-no's that was dinned into aspiring writers at conferences etc. If the two characters can sit down and talk through the problem you don't have enough of a conflict. The other thing I learned early on was that editors hate plots that rely on coincidences like overheard conversations or someone arriving unexpectedly at just the wrong time. Still, authors get away with those things and I suspect with the rise of self-publishing those aspects aren't picked up as much anymore.

And then there's the Too Stupid To Live heroine... the one who confronts the bad guy alone in the dark at an isolated location.

Read a book with MPG Popular Science"

I had a look at the Lists and came up with this: https://www.goodreads.com/genres/most...

It seems to include a range of books covering psychology, chemistry etc that are written for non scientists eg I've read 21 Lessons for the 21st Century which I enjoyed and we have Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind by the same author which I don't really want to tackle but will if we're stuck.

This looks interesting Truth: A Brief History of Total Bullsh*t Truth A Brief History of Total Bullsh*t by Tom Phillips

35559 That sounds fascinating. She's a terrific author.

When we were in Cornwall in the the mid seventies there was such thick fog (about 15 degrees in June) we could barely see the water when we stood at Land's End. Very atmospheric though, crossing the moors with those little ponies appearing out of the gloom. Have you read Lorna Doone? It's set in Exmoor rather than Cornwall but is similar in mood.

My husband picked Julius up somewhere. He said it's quite unpleasant because Julius is such a horrible selfish person.

Thanks everyone.

35559 Does MPG science count as Popular Science? My book Islands of Abandonment by Cal Flyn has Science listed.
At the moment it’s a Rainbow Blue cover and 300 pages.

35559 Monochrome means one /single colour doesn’t it, not necessarily white?
Eg Under the Greenwood Tree by Thomas Hardy would work. I may have another old book like that.
