Here’s the thing. We all go through seasons, some blissfully wonderful, some not so much. Some ‘seasons’ in life through us for a loop.

ALL THE FRACTURES

My ‘season’ has been a loopdy-loop, starting in 2019 with the first fracture. That was followed in 2020 with another fracture, both in different metatarsals, both in my right foot. 2021 was delightful with two separate fractures, first in the fibula, then—after two torn ligaments—a fracture in the tibia! Both of these also in my right leg. These all were stress fractures. I never did figure out how they happened, nor did I feel any significant pain.

Then 2022. Fingers crossed that there would be no more fractures. I mean who has that many fractures that close together? (Me, that’s who.) And you guessed it. There was yet another fracture. This one, however, was not a stress fracture but a trauma fracture. I didn’t realize at the time but I do remember when it happened; I thought I had a severely pulled muscle or pinched nerve. But no! I had fractured the ischium part of my pelvis and it wasn’t a stress fracture. I was sitting on the edge of a plastic seat—hard plastic—leaning over to transplant some of my flowers.

If that sounds like a lot of fractures, it is. I have osteoporosis but still. That’s extreme. (I’m now on a new med that is helping.) As many of you know, I also have rheumatoid arthritis, which slows a body down.

Okay, so what does all this have to do with the title of this post?

THE TITLE of THIS POST

Well, it’s kind of hard to get out and go for walks—my preferred form of exercise. So I sat. For four years. On my fat—and getting fatter—happy side. Of course I did move around as I could. I hobbled through some little “walklets” as I call them. (Quarter of a mile, the distance of my street from top to bottom and back again.) But with the air cast, or boot, it was messing with my back. And that’s another whole story…

So this brings me to the title and reason for this post. I’m currently weighing in at 240 +/- pounds. More than I’ve ever weighed in my life. And I don’t like it. There were no new fractures in 2023—HALLELUJAH—so it’s time to do something about my weight.

As I gain strength—and here’s the thing about building my strength back: I need to exercise and move around to gain strength but I need some strength and energy to be able to exercise and move around… You see the predicament.

So I start small, or slow. But I start. Correction, I have started.

SMOOTHIES

Besides exercise, I’m watching what I eat. Portion control is a huge part of it. I’ve started making smoothies for my lunch. I’ve flax seed that I add to them, and walnuts and granola, depending on what kind I’m making. My go-to is apple with walnut, but I’ve done banana walnut, too, which tastes rather like banana bread. Avocado and spinach is a another favorite. I bought a smoothie recipe book so I can have more variety.

TAKE 2

As to the “Take 2” part of the title of this post, that’s because I started this journey in the summer of 2022. I had already fractured the ischium (part of the pelvis bone) but didn’t realize it was a fracture. Unlike all the previous fractures, which were stress fractures, this one was a trauma fracture—I’ve figured out when it happened and what I was doing to cause it—it hurt. A LOT! But I did make significant progress losing weight. Twenty-five pounds, actually. When the fracture was discovered, I slowed back down. Alas. On the heels of that was the extreme excruciating pain in my back. Muscles spasms are no joke! Twice last year I was in the ER from the pain, and after the second ER visit in June I had to use my walker almost all the time.

PAIN MANAGEMENT

I went to pain management and had a procedure done—an RF ablation—in the right side of my back. (Dr. Hall only does one side at a time, and the right side has always been worse, probably because there’s I have scoliosis.) That has helped immensely but it’s not a definitive cure. Still, relief is relief and I’ve been able to get out and go for some of my little walklets. Even if I can only make it to the corner and back, I’m moving around. I also bought a back brace to help correct my posture and will start going back to physical therapy again.

So say goodbye to Fat Robin and keep your eyes open for, well not skinny Robin but not-fat-anymore Robin. I’ll get there, I promise! I have to!

MY REVIEW

When Father God says He’ll take what the enemy has planned for evil and use it for the good of those who love Him (Romans 8:28) He ain’t kidding.

And Ms. Mauck expresses it so well in her story. And not just a single good thing for Margie Thornton, but, well, you’ll just have to read the story to find out.

It’s a common plight of orphaned children—sent to live with relatives. For some, it’s a happy ending. For others, like Margie, not so much, living more as a servant than a family member.

But God had other ideas. And as He is so often wont to do, He keeps His plans from us. We only discover His secrets as they come our way.

Devoted to God, Margie trusts Him even in the darkest times. Even when things look hopeless and all seems lost.

But then those seeming random moments occur and…

A beautiful story of faith and hope, of dreams fulfilled, Ms. Mauck expresses the life of a true believer with heart and feeling and passion.
