Writing on the Waves Workshop Info
There is still some space available!
I met with George the travel agent yesterday to work on some details and he gave me some tips on things I didn't know before:
1. There are three formal dinners (formal dress), two semi-formal, and the rest cruise casual.
2. Cropped tops, flip flops, bathing suits, and short shorts that reveal too much are not welcome in the dining room.
3. Bring your own medications (sea sick pills, anti diarreahals, and the like. They cost a fortune on the ship, as do vis...

Alice
Reading Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland" and listening to the movie soundtrack. Am I obsessed? One of my favorite books in the world.

Jabberwocky
I love John Tenniel's original illustrations for the Alice books. I spent some of my hour in line outside in the cold downloading the books to my iPhone Kindle and looking at them. As I remembered, the picture of the Jabberwocky battle looked almost exactly as the "oracular" picture in the movie (the poses, not the setting):
Check out the swordsman's hair and armor. I wonder if that inspired the movie? Love the Jabberwocky's waistcoat, too.
The poem, which contains the only reference to a "band...

Movie rec: Alice in Wonderland
O frabjous day, I loved this movie! Two words: Girl Hero.
The plot has some weak moments, and a few silly ones, and Alice, not the Mad Hatter was the main character regardless of what the previews lead you to believe, which is a good thing, wonderful as Johnny Depp is, but overall it is a psychedelic head trip of the nicest kind. Alan Rickman as the Caterpillar sounded a lot like Snape. Stephen Frye was delightful as the Cheshire Cat. Anne Hathaway must be the creepiest "good guy" I've seen i...

Taking Sunday Off
Apparently telling myself that I am over a cold does not make it so. Told myself it was a 24 hr. bug last weekend but it's still got its hooks in me. Came home from a party early last night, then slept until 10:30! Unheard of! Still coughing.
I plan to try a liberal 3-D dose of Tim Burton's "Alice" this afternoon, taken with popcorn and Jr. Mints and see what that does. Don't know that I'll make it through the Oscars tonight, or care.

Oracle's Queen Russian Editions!
I just received a parcel (Russian publishers still send things wrapped up in brown paper and string, which I love) containing copies of the beautiful hardcover edition of Oracle's Queen. I have no idea how the trilogy is doing over there, but I'm glad to see the books coming out there, my very first foreign market.

Pondering Zombies
I don't really get zombies. I'm more of a ghost/space monster/Anne Rice-and-earlier vampire sort of person. Zombies are so messy. They are all rotten-looking and stinky and there are always too damn many of them to be believed. A whole town turns, except, inexplicably, our little group of heroes, all but two of whom are predictably disposable. How the hell do they find enough shotgun shells? Sure, it's exciting to see Our Heroes over come impossible--seriously--odds but at what point does it ...

Criminal Minds "Mosley Lane"
Matthew Gray Gubler did a bang up job directing the Mosley Lane episode this week. Stupid DVR didn't record last night and we had to buy it on iTunes, but well worth it. I missed who the writer was, but very well done, and the child actors were terrific. The evil kidnapper mother was taken almost directly from the evil witch and her oven in "Hansel and Gretel." CM is such a good show. Some episodes are better than others, but this is the best in a while.
