Congrats to Team Canada!

OK, so I was rooting for the US women's hockey team, but Canada outplayed us, and there's no shame in silver. Canada has really broken that "No medals on home ground" curse in good shape.

Mini Workshop #3 Revisions

This will be my final "preview" workshop, I think. Can't give it all away; I'm just not that kind of girl. ;-) There is still space available on the Writing On The Waves workshop cruise.

All material copyright 2010 by Lynn Flewelling.
There, that's out of the way. One to revisions. . . . On to revizion.

Damn it.

On to revisions.

Ask five writers how they handle revisions and you will probably get five different answers, up to a point. Here's mine.

Stage 1: In-process revision. Some people w...

"Red Riding" (Not Hood)

Watched the first two movies of the "Red Riding" trilogy, an amazing, multiyear noir story of a corrupt police force in northern England, strung together with a series of serial killings. "Who are you going to call when someone breaks into your house, rapes your wife and kills your dog?" "Not the police, mate. They're already there!"

"Pulp Fiction" meets "Prime Suspect." Must read the novels they are based on, by David Peace. One more to go. Love On Demand!

Three Work Ethic Questions for Any Published Authors Lurking Here

This one is for published authors only. Feel free to answer only the questions you want to. Take as much or as little space as you like.

1. What is your best strength, in terms of self discipline when it comes to showing up at the page? How do you maintain it?

2. What is your biggest weakness/time sink? What do you think the cure is?

3. What one self-care thing to you wish you'd do on a regular basis?

Temple in Turkey Pre-dates Pyramids

From Newsweek: "Standing on the hill at dawn, overseeing a team of 40 Kurdish diggers, the German-born archeologist waves a hand over his discovery here, a revolution in the story of human origins. Schmidt has uncovered a vast and beautiful temple complex, a structure so ancient that it may be the very first thing human beings ever built. The site isn't just old, it redefines old: the temple was built 11,500 years ago—a staggering 7,000 years before the Great Pyramid, and more than 6,000 year...

Tenure and Olympic Hockey

We celebrated Doug's successful tenure review with our department friends with champagne and watching the US vs Canada hockey game. Excellent game! Both teams played so well and Canada gave us a good scare at the end with a rally. I remember goalie Ryan Miller from his Buffalo Saber days when we lived back east. The guy was a brick wall tonight. Whoo hoo!

Now for women's speed skating and figure skating and a nice Kir Royale.

After the Rapture Pet Care

I'm not making fun of this. I think it's a great concept; someone is really looking at all the angles. I'm not a Rapture believer myself, but if I was, I'd be thinking, "Dang, why didn't I think of that?" And I'd hope that we weren't driving the dogs to the beach when it happened. I couldn't tell if it was a paid service.

Lynn's 10 Rules

Some of Lynn's Rules of Writing:

1. Experience life with all senses engaged, and bring that to your writing.
2. Read, read, read. And not just the sort of thing you want to write. You need a deep well to draw from.
3. There's no such thing as a perfect first draft. Or a second. Or a fifth.
4. There's no one right way to write. Show up and get get the work done.
5. There is no such thing as "channeling." You are the author. You are in control.
6. Start a new notebook for each new book. Write down ev...
