"Don't ask, don't tell" under fire

Rep. senator on CNN this morning: "How do you think the men will feel if they have to shower with gays? You wouldn't ask them to shower with women."

Sir, they already are showering with gay people. Now let's find a way to deal with it, shall we?

Punch Drunk

I can't tell if I smacked my characters around today, or they smacked me. Probably the latter.

John Scalzi on Amazon/Macmillan

Author John Scalzi gives a intelligent and witty summation, with one of my favorite writer quotes in a long time: "Amazon apparently forgot that when it moved against Macmillan, it also moved against Macmillan's authors. Macmillan may be a faceless, soulless baby-consuming corporate entity with no feelings or emotions, but authors have both of those, and are also twitchy neurotic messes who obsess about their sales, a fact which Amazon should be well aware of because we check our Amazon numbe...

Amazon vs. Macmillan-the dust settles for now

As stated in earlier posts, there was a major tidal wave in the publishing world over the weekend as Amazon and Macmillan duked it out over the price of e books, Amazon pulled Macmillan's books from its virtual shelves, and even sucked sample chapters off people's Kindles, however that's done, but Macmillan held its ground until Amazon backed down. And all this precipitated by the Apple iPad and Apple's agreement with five of the big six publishers to a system of pricing that allows them to ...

Re: Strange Day

I don't know what to say. To be honest, I'd meant to "no response" that one, as I was just venting, but I deeply appreciate the show of support. Thank you.

Heh.

Too good not to share.

Luck in the Shadows Customer review from B&N: "this book will make you sick. The author i believe was trying to make a statement with the main characters. This book should be burned. I feel sorry for the paper it was printed on. If you still decide to read it then you better have a bucket handy....."

1408

Rounding out my strange day watching scary movie "1408." Love the book signing from hell at the beginning. Sometimes Hollywood actually gets it right. We've all had days like that.

Strange Day

I was going to write today.

Then I made the mistake of checking in with the blogosphere and getting overwhelmed by the Amazon vs. Macmillan battle. Wiser people that I are talking about it all over the place. It's a clash of the titans and a lot of writers are getting caught in the crossfire.

There's been a lively debate about Avatar and racial politics going on below. I wish my book releases got that kind of response.

My writing day was shot before it started, so I went on an hour scooter ri...

Movie rec: Avatar

Finally got to see Avatar, 3D glasses and all. Wow! Despite the predictable and sometimes preachy plot, I was enthralled through the whole thing. The visuals were stunning and the characters just wonderful and engaging. And the wildlife! It truly was a very realized world, though they were a little sketchy on where food came from. I hate to admit it, but I've never been so glad to see so many humans wiped out by aliens.

I think 3 D is here to stay, and that it will only keep getting better. ...

Oh, the Horror!

Writing is a sedentary business, and due to that, coupled with my general dislike of organized exercise classes, I've long since reached the point of Needing To Do Something About This. My latest attempt is kick boxing. That's right, I said kick boxing. My meditation friends find this quite funny and paradoxical, but I don't actually hit anyone. I was flipping through the channels one day last week and came across a show on the fitness channel, a ripped-looking (I think that's the term) woman...
