Some days you need a fine sable brush. Some days you need a ball peen hammer.
It was a 1400-word hammer day. It doesn't always have to be "either" "or". I think instead of two different beginnings, I wrote a beginning and a middle! So far "sweaty" opening won, with "autumn" opening transformed into nifty plot advancing mid-story business. Whoo hoo!

Hold On Now, Why Am I Not In This Loop?
*sigh*
Today on Facebook a fan, out of the blue, railed against another author, saying she'd borrowed heavily from the Nightrunner books for her fantasy series. That was news to me, and her series came out in '08. I know that this particular author is a fan of mine, and a member of this LJ. I've seen these books at Amazon (they are frequently linked to mine), read the descriptions, and didn't have that impression. I went to the author's LJ and saw a post in which she states that Nightrunner f...

It's Autumn Because I SAY It Is, Damn It!
Beginnings of books are the hardest part for me, and the part that I rewrite the most. I began this new NR with a great heat of summer scene with lots of sweaty imagery and business that I really liked.
Then I realized, a number of chapters in, that the timing was all wrong for the action that I'd realized I needed to move the plot forward because of a new plot line I needed to weave in. It needs to be late autumn.
Damn.
Totally new—and I think better—opening, but gone is the lovely sweaty im...

MultiDimensional TransCultural WhoDat? Weekend
Saturday: Alternated between rearranging my external physical environment (cleaned the bedroom) and making some major shifts in the new Nightrunner book, which now seems to want to be titled Winter Players.
Sunday: Up early and accompanied a professor of religion friend of mine and her students on a field trip to Hsi Lai Buddhist Temple in Hacienda Heights. I'd been there before, but it was nice to see it with a guide. Had to bite my tongue when he'd pose questions about the various symbols ...

Harmless, Happy, Fluffy
Grey rainy day.
Delivered editing. One of my clients is a GI specialist at the VA hospital. I now know an awful lot more about stomach stapling surgery and the like than I did on Monday. Not for the squeamish.
Doctor's appointment to get post root canal antibiotics that don't make me too ill to work.
Retreating to Panera to write. No dogs, TV, internet, laundry, cooking, and all the other things that seem so much more attractive today.
Pick up husband at airport. He was one of the last escapees...

Having a Look at the Tea Party
The Tea Party's leadership claims to support neither the Rep. or the Dems, that they're mad at both of them, that they're just middle of the road. OK. What do they want? Who are their leaders? Their influences? I decided to go check out their convention. Here's what I found.
Tea Party Statement of Purpose:
Who are we? Our members have joined us from all over the nation, from every state and even from foreign countries!
Tea Party Nation (or TPN) is a user-driven group of like-minded people...

Title Meme
Meme nicked from
suricattus
LJ "okay,
matociquala
triggered the first lines meme. The idea is that, by posting the first line of works in progress, they become real and finished. Or you're shamed into finishing them."
Good idea, though I only have two. The titles are only the working titles and subject to change.
The Winter Players: Seregil hadn't been sure what to expect, or rather, he hadn't expected much.
The Dreaming Quarter: Born in the Quarter. Die in the Quarter.

Shudder
Root canal yesterday and more drilling to put on the temporary cap today. I've had quite enough of that, thank you very much! Mindful breathing did help, but I still wanted the novacaine. I'm going to go look at my fish now, then write, then get ready for sangha, which I will really need by then.

Why Books Aren't Free
I've been following a conversation on another blogsite, where people are arguing all sorts of ways about copyright and the music industry and why ebooks should (or shouldn't) be free. I finally couldn't stand it, since most of what they're saying takes in nothing about the fiction publishing world, and wrote a much longer comment than I'd intended. Here's the abridged version.
. . .
Here's how it works in my world. I put in a year or two per book, creating a story that will give pleasure and...
