Olympics Recap

I get so sappy watching figure skating. Give me a heart string pulling backstory and I'm all aquiver. But I really was pleased for the Chinese couples who took gold and silver last night. Did anyone else think that Pang and Tong skated better than Shen and Zhao in the long program? I understand why the scores came out as they did. It was a thrill to see both of them do so well, especially after hearing their coach's story. I had nothing against the Russians, but have to admit seeing a Russian...

"Soup of the evening, beautiful soooooup!"

Recipe time, with apologies to Lewis Carroll. This is really good. I've got a pot going tonight.

Greek Chickpea Soup with Spinach

Chop:
2 cloves garlic
2 yellow onions

Dice:
1 stalk celery
1 sm. carrot
1 leek

In large pot, saute the vegetables in 1/4C olive oil until the onion is translucent.

Add 5 C. vegetable stock (I use Better Than Bullion paste). Bring to boil and cook over medium heat for about an hour. Add one can (drained) chickpeas and continue heating.

Wash and destem 1/2 lb. raw spinach. Ch...

Why One Of My Arms Is Longer Than The Other

OK, dog people:

Just back from a training walk with Jackson. He's 16 mos. old now, 80 lbs. and starting to develop some big dog habits, not all of them good ones.

He's still spooky outside on a leash, but much better than he once was. We were doing fine with passing cars and people talking across the street, but then we came upon a repair man unloading his truck and J. got nervous. We had already passed him when unbeknownst to me the man pulled out a ladder and started down the sidewalk behin...

In Which Your Humble Author Shares Some Writerly Stuff and a Riff

Monday, and it only took me three and a half cups of coffee to get off the ground. As I got one eye open, and then the other, I bumped around on various LJs.
That was much more fun than the thought of getting in the shower just then. It was a really good discussion, with many points of view put forth. Here's an abridged excerpt of my...

Happy Valentines' and Year of the Tiger!

My honey presented me with a box of my favorite chocolate and smoked sea salt covered caramels, the US Women's Olympic hockey team beat China, I'm getting some work done, two teas reviewed, and figure skating tonight! All in all, a pretty good day!

Mini Workshop #1

Here is a small sample of the sort of thing we will be discussing during the Writing on the Waves workshop.

Character and Plot

Which comes first: character or story?

The short answer is: it depends on the writer, it doesn't really matter, and yes.

Say you're standing there in the shower one morning and suddenly have a vision of a planet under attack by crab-shaped robots, with all kinds of nifty, well researched hard science that drives the plot. To tell that story, you need a character or char...

As I prep for my May "Writing on the Waves" workshop, I thought I would share some mini-lessons here if there is interest. Show of hands?

TV: Past Life

I'm fascinated with reincarnation and have had some interesting regression experiences, so I was primed for this show, which settles into its regular slot on Fox this Thursday at 9 pm. In short, a sexy blond scientist and a grizzled, world weary detective with a tragic past team up to solve crimes by working with people experiencing past life visions.

The chemistry between the sexy blond believer scientist Kate McGinn (Kelli Giddish) and the grizzled soon-to-be won-over detective Price Whatl...
