Jesus Prayed

August 21, 2025 – 08/21/2025
8 – New Beginnings
21 – Manifest Spirit
Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere. Ephesians 6:18 NLT
Jesus Prayed
In the Gospels, we are told that God, through His Son, Jesus Christ, made a way for us to live with Him forever. The fullness of His glory and grace was revealed to the world through Jesus. Jesus modeled for us how to walk as a person on Earth, filled with the Holy Spirit, fulfilling a Kingdom mission. Studying what Jesus did while He was on Earth shows us how to live our lives today. One very noticeable thing He did was to pray.

– Jesus prioritized time alone with the Father. He made space for communion with God even when surrounded by crowds.

But Jesus often withdrew to the wilderness for prayer. Luke 5:16

– Before major decisions, Jesus sought God’s wisdom through extended prayer.

Jesus went up on a mountain to pray, and he prayed to God all night. At daybreak, he called together all of his disciples and chose twelve of them to be apostles. Luke 6:12-13

– Jesus prayed during a moment of public commitment, His baptism. Prayer marked the beginning of His ministry.

One day, when the crowds were being baptized, Jesus himself was baptized. As he was praying, the heavens opened. Luke 3:21

– Jesus prayed even in the midst of His anguish.

My Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine. Matthew 26:39

– Jesus prayed while suffering in His final moments with forgiveness and trust.

Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing. Luke 23:34

An old Cherokee chief was teaching his grandson about life. He told the boy, “A terrible fight is going on inside me. It is a fight between two wolves. One wolf is evil. He is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and self-doubt."

The old man continued: “The other wolf is good. He is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith.” He then told the boy, “This same fight is going on inside you and inside every other person, too.”

The grandson thought about it for a minute, then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?” The wise old chief replied, “The one you feed.”

What wolf have you been feeding? Just know the wolf of evil thoughts will eventually devour you, and likely others as well. Thoughts become actions, and there is always collateral damage.

– Jesus prioritized time alone with the Father. He made space for communion with God even when surrounded by crowds.
But Jesus often withdrew to the wilderness for prayer. Luke 5:16– Before major decisions, Jesus sought God’s wisdom through extended prayer.
Jesus went up on a mountain to pray, and he prayed to God all night. At daybreak, he called together all of his disciples and chose twelve of them to be apostles. Luke 6:12-13– Jesus prayed during a moment of public commitment, His baptism. Prayer marked the beginning of His ministry.

Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing. Luke 23:34– Jesus prayed for His disciples, and for every future believer, including you.
I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me… John 17When He said, Come follow me, He meant in all His ways. It is a call to prayer.
Grounded in FaithDeclare!Jesus shows me the way to live my life. Gratitude fills my soul when I realize I can talk to God and hear what He says to me. I dedicate time to intentionally coming into the Intimate Presence of the Lord Most High in reverence and prayer. I live by every word that proceeds out of His mouth, and I long to hear Him and be heard by Him. Oh how I love Him!

Life on Purpose

I walk in righteousness, in paths of justice. Proverbs 8:20 NLT
Life on Purpose
Put everything you’re involved in right now down at the feet of Jesus. He will tell you the things He’ll handle Himself and those He wants to help you with as you seek Him.

Alignment for assignment is all about fighting the right battles. Open Door Church is called to fight the battle of poverty and hunger through our food bank and homeless outreach. We are called to fight the battle for freedom from slavery. We do this through Troy Brewer Ministries.

We are also called to give orphans a new family name – Christians – through our SPARK Worldwide orphanages.

There are a lot of other great things out there – Kingdom things – that we could be involved in. However, we would be out of alignment because we were not specifically called to do those things. When I say called, I mean God has placed a holy hatred for that thing in my heart, as the pastor, and in our hearts collectively as a congregation.

I don’t want to fight the wrong battles. That never ends well because God didn’t give me the grace to win on that battlefield.

It’s easy to be fascinated with things that are not your assignment. Ministries that other people or churches are doing, and doing well, are their assignment. Don’t go coveting what they have. Why? Because God has a personal, specific purpose for you.

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. – Ephesians 2:10

Yes, your purpose is yours alone. Line up with it and leave your hands off the good things others are doing!

Which Wolf Do You Feed?

Big Faith to Pursue God

August 19, 2025 – 08/19/2025
8 – New Beginnings
19 – Faith
My gifts are better than gold, even the purest gold, my wages better than sterling silver! Proverbs 8:19 NLT
Big Faith to Pursue God
There is a divine tension that perpetuates your destiny coming to pass. What might seem like a problem just may be your answer. What sounds like silence may be your opportunity to seek, speak, or listen with your whole heart. The lesson of the wilderness is that God protects those who stay close to Him, no matter what.

When He brought the Hebrews out of Egypt, God stayed in front of the people as a cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. They followed, never knowing where they were going. The only strategy they were allowed was day-to-day survival. This meant sticking close to the goodness of God because that’s where the provision, manna, was.

We all have to learn the wilderness lesson over and over again in different stages of life. Let me tell you this: the Promised Land is different from the wilderness, where you follow God and survive by learning to trust Him.

The lesson of the Promised Land is that God blesses pursuit. Through God-given strategy and courage, the Hebrews took on walled cities, 31 kingdoms, and warrior giants in the Promised Land. They followed their vision, and God backed them up.

That’s how it works in your life as well. You learn to trust God and live in His presence in the wilderness. Then, when you go after your destiny in the Promised Land, He backs you up. You don’t have to be afraid to pursue His will for your life.

Where are you? In the wilderness, learning to trust God for your provision? Or are you taking those first steps into your Promised Land? Maybe you’re already stomping around in your Promised Land, taking on giants and claiming territory for the Kingdom. Whichever one is you, know God is pleased. Father God loves it when His kids move forward.

“Who fed you in the wilderness with manna, which your fathers did not know, that He might humble you and that He might test you, to do you good in the end.” Deuteronomy 8:16

Which Wolf Do You Feed?

Step Out
On July 16, 1969, at 13:32 EDT, a three-man crew soared with wings of eagles past the Earth’s atmosphere to the moon. Prophetically, the lunar module was named Eagle.

When I think of what those guys went through to break through the Earth’s gravity, it blows my mind! With the computer technology of a modern wristwatch, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins did what most thought impossible. They orbited, then landed on the moon.

The mission commander, Armstrong, said, “Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed.” With those eight words, a new era of space exploration had begun. In the Bible, eight means “new beginnings.”

A few minutes later, Armstrong said some other prophetic words, “One small step for man. One giant leap for mankind,” as he left an American flag and some footprints to mark his territory. Man’s accomplishments were on display! Note the name “Arm-strong,” and I think you get the picture.

Though it was a wonder that men were able to accomplish such a feat, there was a man who had done so much greater. You see, 2,000 years ago, this man left his footprints in the dust of planet Earth. Instead of leaving the earth to go to the heavens, He left Heaven to come to Earth. His impact upon this world is felt today across the globe as millions follow in His footsteps.

As man vowed to return to the moon, Jesus vowed to come back to earth. His original goal was accomplished and His vow to return will be fulfilled sooner than you and I think! Are you prepared?

We cannot step in the footprints of Armstrong, but we can certainly follow the footsteps of Jesus. He has laid out the path of redemption, and it leads to a big mansion where rooms for you and I await, where we will be part of the family. All we need to do is step where He steps!

Grounded in FaithDeclare! When I follow Jesus and take the steps He sets before me, my life is fulfilled, and I accomplish more than I can do on my own. Today, I will listen for God’s prompting to take the next step in a new direction. His footsteps lead to wonder-filled adventures and Kingdom accomplishments.

Change For God

August 16, 2025 – 08/16/2025
8 – New Beginnings
16 – The Love of God
No one lights a lamp and then covers it with a bowl or hides it under a bed. A lamp is placed on a stand, where its light can be seen by all who enter the house. Luke 8:16 NLT
Change For God
Change is the only constant. If this old saying is true, and it is, why do you and I resist change so frequently and fervently? Heck, many of us just plain fear change.

That’s not a Kingdom way of thinking. I don’t want to stay the same, and neither should you. If you’ve been walking with Jesus for any amount of time, you should have an insatiable thirst for moving forward, increase, and upgrade in your life. I love this verse, and it sums up why we need to embrace change and move forward.

“Why sit we here until we die?” – 2 Kings 7:3

This guy has the right idea. Sitting around, resisting change because you fear the future brings nothing but death! Choose to live a powerful life. Choose serving others, bringing heaven to earth, and going after upgrade in your relationship with your King.

How about you? Has a fear of change kept you from moving forward? Comfort is the enemy of upgrade. So get up, follow Jesus, and let Him lead you into some cool places where you can make an eternal difference.

Remember, Father God sees us for all that we can be, not what we are! Be constantly changing for the better as God moves you forward into bigger and better things. Your Father has a plan for you, and it is good! He’s inviting you to transform into the image of that plan. He is awaiting your “Yes and Amen!”

Which Wolf Do You Feed?

Jesus-driven thinking helps and heals. This is what the Bible has to say on the subject: For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. – Romans 8:6

The Cherokee nation knew it, too. Check out this spot-on tribal tale:

That’s not you! You can control your thought life and ensure the evil wolf starves to death.
et_pb_blurb"}">Change For God

Blessed by Signs, Miracles, and Wonders

August 15, 2025 – 08/15/2025
8 – New Beginnings
15 – Rest and Overcoming Death
So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father.” Romans 8:15 NLT
Blessed by Signs,
Miracles, and Wonders
All three works of the Holy Spirit, signs, miracles, and wonders, are mentioned together in only one verse in the Bible. “Fellow Israelites, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know.” Acts 2:22

Hold on tight as I give you Troy’s Cliff Notes primer on signs, miracles, and wonders.

A sign is when God uses the natural to point to the supernatural. A microburst snapped the power pole, blew up the transformer, and cut the power to a friend’s house. The electric company put up a new pole and transformer, but there was a message in that wind. God used the natural to cut off an old power source – a negative way of thinking – and replaced it with a new power source – Godly thinking. When it comes to signs, only those looking for them can see them. I’m looking!

A miracle is when God changes, or exchanges, the natural with the supernatural. It’s when God intervenes in extreme circumstances and rescues us from negative circumstances, danger, or a major malfunction. Sickness is healed, a car is miraculously moved out of the way of a speeding truck, or an unexpected check that is enough to pay the past due mortgage shows up in the mail.

A wonder is a jaw dropper, attached to how wonderful God is. It raises the bar for new levels of faith. Wonders in my life include being given a million-dollar church campus by a near stranger before I even knew I needed one, and praying with a prison inmate desperate to get a message to his long-lost family. The next day, I was sitting beside his brother in a 60,000-seat stadium. It’s God taking you to the next level of His goodness.

Spiritual Search and Rescue

August 14, 2025 – 08/14/2025
8 – New Beginnings
14 – Generational Promises & The Fear of The Lord
When Jesus arrived at Peter’s house, Peter’s mother-in-law was sick in bed with a high fever. But when Jesus touched her hand, the fever left her. Then she got up and prepared a meal for him. Matthew 8:14-16 NLT
Spiritual Search and Rescue
Few people have the compulsion to run into a burning building. Those who do, we call heroes.

God is looking for heroes because, let’s face it, this earth is a burning building, and people are going to hell every day. Meanwhile, we cower in the shadows (what if I get hurt?), ignore the screams (I just don’t know any non-Christians), or pass the buck (there are missionaries for that) on the mess that is this world and the fallen people in it.

But God isn’t afraid of this mess we’ve made for ourselves. He’s not afraid of YOUR mess. He has saved you from chaos, destruction, and death. Determine right now to run to Jesus with your messes instead of running away from Him in shame or fear.

When you no longer run from the Lord, but to Him with your mess, you learn to not run from the devil and the messes of this world. That’s where good overcomes evil, and the Body of Christ starts to take on hell with a water pistol!

One of the church’s biggest mistakes has been to vilify the unsaved as wanton sinners who love darkness and hate light. This is not the truth! The Bible says God doesn’t want anyone to perish!

God sees the unsaved for what they are – prisoners of war. They are POWs in the cosmic battle of Good vs. Evil, Jesus vs. Satan, Heaven vs. hell. We don’t leave POWs to die in chains. We plan and execute a search and rescue mission to free them!

“If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them wanders away, what will he do? Won’t he leave the ninety-nine others on the hills and go out to search for the one that is lost? And if he finds it, I tell you the truth, he will rejoice over it more than over the ninety-nine that didn’t wander away! In the same way, it is not my heavenly Father’s will that even one of these little ones should perish.” Matthew 18:12-14

Which Wolf Do You Feed?

Small to Be a Big Blessing

August 13, 2025 – 08/13/2025
8 – New Beginnings
13 – Rebellion
All who fear the Lord will hate evil. Therefore, I hate pride and arrogance, corruption and perverse speech. Proverb 8:13 NLT
Small to Be a Big Blessing
Paul got smaller the longer he walked with the Lord. You can clearly see it in his writings. When he wrote his letter to the Galatians—

Paul, an apostle (not from men nor through man, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father who raised Him from the dead)… Galatians 1:1

Just a year or so later, when he writes to the Corinthians, Paul doesn’t put so much stock in his title or credentials. His perception of himself had changed dramatically.

“For I am the least of the apostles, who am not worthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 1 Corinthians 15:9

And about five years after that, in 64 A.D., he doesn’t even call himself an apostle. In fact, Paul sees himself as “least among the saints.”

“To me, who am less than the least of all the saints, this grace was given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ” Ephesians 3:8.

Three years later, at the end of his life and sitting in a Roman dungeon, Paul wrote to Timothy, the young pastor of the biggest church in the world at the time. In this letter, Paul called himself “the chief of sinners” because he counted his sins so grievous. Praise the Lord that Jesus counted them as forgiven!

How did Paul deal with all the conflict, persecution, and outright hell he endured as an apostle and martyr of the early church? He got small. Prison does that. With nothing to do, nowhere to go, and no one to lord over, inmates are forced to get small. Paul was.

He knew it wasn’t about him, but about Jesus. This knowledge gave Paul the ability to “finish his course” as written in 2 Timothy 4:7. What about you? Do you want to finish your course well? Can you become a prisoner of God’s mercy and grace so Jesus can become large in the eyes of non-believers?

Which Wolf Do You Feed?

Loyally Committed

August 12, 2025 – 08/12/2025
8 – New Beginnings
12 – Perfect Government
Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.” John 8:12 NLT
Loyally Committed
I love to love things. I try not to be overly compulsive, but if I love something, I really love it. It becomes a loyalty issue, like being a Cowboys fan.

Loyalty is big with me. I love allegiance, commitment, sold-out devotion, and covenant. These qualities in people really get my attention.

I love the church, and when I say “church,” I mean the body of Christ – the people who faithfully love and serve Him and others. However, I hate me some religious folks and the junk they tend to operate in and pass along to others.

I believe Jesus is totally anti-religion. He was 2,000 years ago, and being the same yesterday, today, and forever, He still is today.

Religious people like to show off their degree, spout off about their “calling,” talents, accomplishments, and qualifications. I really don’t think Jesus cares about those things.

What does He care about? Faithfulness and loyalty. He cares about covenant.

You see, Jesus qualifies those who are selflessly devoted. Servants who don’t fall out or lose focus. You can count on them and their heart for the Lord and His work.

On the other hand, I think He also gets tired of our excuses for dropping the ball or running off the reservation.

Often, what we want isn’t what we need. There are seasons when we experience lack, and seasons of abundance, times to sow, and times to reap. In all of these, give praise and honor to the Lord. Live large through the Holy Spirit.

God loves to use people who are committed – even messed-up people like you and me. Do you want God to use you for great things in the Kingdom? Your loyalty, love, and willingness to go after His heart by serving qualify you for the job, so get going!

Which Wolf Do You Feed?

The grandson thought about it for a minute, then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?” The wise old chief replied, “The one you feed.”

What wolf have you been feeding? Just know the wolf of evil thoughts will eventually devour you, and likely others as well. Thoughts become actions, and there is always collateral damage.

That’s not you! You can control your thought life and ensure the evil wolf starves to death.
et_pb_blurb"}">Loyally Committed
Grounded in FaithDeclare!I don’t make excuses for not walking a Kingdom walk – I make plans with Jesus to partner with Him. I love Him so much, and I rejoice that He loves me. There is nothing I want more than to have a close, loving relationship with Him.
