The old man continued: “The other wolf is good. He is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith.” He then told the boy, “This same fight is going on inside you and inside every other person, too.”

The grandson thought about it for a minute, then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?” The wise old chief replied, “The one you feed.”

What wolf have you been feeding? Just know the wolf of evil thoughts will eventually devour you, and likely others as well. Thoughts become actions, and there is always collateral damage.

The world does not draw me into the lies and labels used in the culture around me. I have been set free from all of that. My eyes and ears are focused on the Word and the Ways of Jesus. He is in me and with me, so I bring His Kingdom into the world and refuse to let the world get into me. There is nothing worth stepping out of the identity He has given me. Holy Spirit gives me the boldness to live a life of Truth.

Freeze That Thought

Steeped in the Word

August 29, 2025 – 08/29/2025

8 – New Beginnings

29 – Mountains

For Jesus had already commanded the evil spirit to come out of him. This spirit had often taken control of the man. Even when he was placed under guard and put in chains and shackles, he simply broke them and rushed out into the wilderness, completely under the demon’s power. Luke 8:29 NLT

Freeze That Thought

There is a spiritual and mental exercise I call “brain freeze.” Brain freeze is when you stop a thought dead in its tracks before it becomes something else. Why? Because your thoughts become feelings, and your feelings generally become your actions. Thinking negative thoughts? Your feelings and actions will reflect that.

Have you ever prepared for an argument before it happened? I know I’ve rehearsed in my mind what I would say if the opportunity arose to tell off my boss or someone else who had offended me. I was going to give that person a “piece of my mind.”

The next thing I knew, that conversation became reality, and it didn’t go well for me. Why? Because I made that argument happen – an argument I should have never had. You can also think of it this way: God has drawn a line in the sand and called it “sin.” You and I tend to get as close to that line as we can, often putting our toes right on it while we say, “I’m not sinning yet. I’m good.” The question that needs to be asked is, “Why am I even close to the line? Why aren’t I a mile away from it?”

It’s like that with your thoughts. You take them right up to the line where they become actions, then act all shocked and shaken that you’ve crossed that line.

“Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ” 2 Corinthians 10:5

Next time you start imagining a scenario or practicing the words you’ll say in a confrontation, brain freeze! Take that thought captive and cast it down.

Which Wolf Do You Feed?

Every time I let go of offenses and offer up forgiveness, I feel free and lighter. I have freedom when I stop talking about what happened and start meditating on what God says. I want to reflect Jesus with all my life. I practice Pastor Troy’s brain freeze method. I freeze the condemning, judgmental thoughts before they come into my mind and choose to see it all the way Jesus sees it – with mercy, grace, and love.

Time to Build with Him

Steeped in the Word

August 28, 2025 – 08/28/2025

8 – New Beginnings

28 – Times and Seasons

So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man on the cross, then you will understand that I am he. I do nothing on my own but say only what the Father taught me. John 8:28 NLT

Time to Build with Him

As a pastor, the most important job I have is to be the architect of the culture of the house. To make sure the way we do things and relate to each other looks more like Heaven than hell.

We make a big deal out of serving the poor, even if they will never come to our church. We make a big deal out of healing, hearing the voice of God, and prophetic things. Relationships and kindness are also big deals to us here at OpenDoor.

You see, if our culture is toxic, it doesn’t matter how much I know about the Bible, how good a preacher I am, or that I give a salvation call every Sunday.

I don’t believe God moves through a church service. I think God moves through the relationships of the people within the church service. We can’t give the atmosphere to the enemy; he desperately wants it!

“…in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience…” Ephesians 2:2

Satan is called the “prince of the power of the air” for a reason. He wants to control the atmosphere and fill it with anger, discord, disobedience, and lies so he can raise up a mob to crush you. That’s why Jesus is called the “Prince of Peace.” If you want the Prince of Peace to show up in the midst of your mess, do this:

“Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things. The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.”– Philippians 4:8-9

If you want to change the atmosphere, change your thinking. Think on Godly things and be the architect of your house, your office, car, marriage, friendships – your everything!

Which Wolf Do You Feed?

I am diligent to contend for my faith and the joy of my salvation. It is the only way I want to live, so I focus on things above and let go of things below.

Hanging Shingles and Helping Souls

Steeped in the Word

August 27, 2025 – 08/27/2025

8 – New Beginnings

27 – Things Revealed & Unveiled in God’s Presence and Light of Truth

And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will.Romans 8:27 NLT

Hanging Shingles and Helping Souls

There’s no way I would ever have signed up to be a pastor. I was going to be a professional musician, tour the world, have lots of fans, and live big. God knew my plan, and He knew it was going to take a bit of bait and switch to get me with His program. This is why I call Him “Jehovah Sneaky.”

It all started with an 80-year-old man putting new shingles on his lady friend’s leaky roof. He only had the strength to climb the roof with a single shingle each day. He would nail it down, rest, then climb down. It was all he could do.

My father-in-law saw this and decided I needed to climb that roof and help that old man get the job done. Still wanting to impress my beautiful bride’s daddy, I got to work.

When I finished, the old lady offered me a glass of lemonade to thank me. Leanna had come over, so we went inside. When she opened her refrigerator, lemonade was about all she had. Leanna made a run for the store and we filled her fridge and cupboards.

The old lady was thankful; the old man wasn’t. “What about me? I need food too,” he said, noting several of his friends needed groceries too. Leanna and I loaded up the back of my truck with bread and other essentials and took them back on Saturday, thinking five or six people would show up. He brought over 30 elderly people.

Within a few months, we were visiting over 70 houses every weekend to deliver food and pray with the people we were blessing. It was the start of the OpenDoor Food Bank, which was the start of OpenDoor Church as we know it.

God knew I wouldn’t sign up to be a pastor, but I’d say yes to helping a hungry neighbor. Now, the food bank feeds thousands of people, and our church blesses even more. I’d say that’s a miracle on a hot tin roof, wouldn’t you?

Follow Me to the End

Steeped in the Word

August 26, 2025 – 08/26/2025

8 – New Beginnings

26 – Beloved

Jesus responded, “Why are you afraid? You have so little faith!” Then he got up and rebuked the wind and waves, and suddenly there was a great calm. Matthew 8:26 NLT

Follow Me to the End

I love the end of the book of John. We get to listen to a very personal conversation between the resurrected hero of the universe and one of the recently restored heroes of the fledgling church.

Jesus asks Peter the same question three times. “Peter, do you love me?” Peter begins to wonder what he should know that only the Lord Himself knows.

“… and Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, You know all things. You know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.” John 21:17

Everybody preaches on the beauty of that message and forgets what comes next. All of a sudden, Jesus turns to Peter and says, “Let me tell you something else I know…” Where this conversation goes is outright glorious.

“Most assuredly I say to you, when you were younger, you girded yourself and walked where you wished; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish. This He spoke, signifying by what death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, “Follow me.” John 21:18-19

Did you catch it? Jesus turns to Peter and says, “You are going to finish really well.” Famous for denying Christ three times, Peter had a history of cussing like the sailor he was and being unpredictable when overwhelmed.

Knowing this, Jesus personally encouraged him by letting him know how his big finish would go. “…Peter, you are going places you never would have gone before. I know how you finish, and it’s all going to glorify me.” Pastor Troy Version

I bet if you listen closely, you’ll hear Jesus tell you the same. I bet if you walk close to Jesus, separate from the crowds, letting Him deal with you however He wants to, you would hear something like, “I’ve seen how you finish and it’s just plain glorious!”

Want a glorious finish? Choose this day whom you will serve and determine not to twist off.

If I stumble, I get back up and move forward again. I will fail only if I choose not to get back up and fight. Christ is in me, and He will never leave me. I will follow Him with every part of my being until the very last day He gives me on Earth so I glorify Him with the life He gave me.

Grace for Kingdom Thoughts

Steeped in the Word

August 25, 2025 – 08/25/2025

8 – New Beginnings

25 – Grace for Grace

Then Jesus placed his hands on the man’s eyes again, and his eyes were opened. His sight was completely restored, and he could see everything clearly. Mark 8:25 NLT

Grace for Kingdom Thoughts

Thoughts progress. They really do! Your thoughts are taking you somewhere, whether you realize it or not. The question is, where will you let them take you?

Your thoughts become your feelings, and many times, your feelings control your actions. If you are going to be successful in your Christian walk, or any other part of your life, for that matter, you need to understand that what you think truly does affect your life.

“For I know their works and their thoughts.”– Isaiah 66:18

What does God know about your thoughts? Just look at the chapter and verse. The number 66 is double “man” or “carnal.” The number 18 is 3×6, which is triple “man” or “carnal.” In other words, God knows our thoughts, and what He sees is not good.

“And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” – Genesis 6:5

God even says your thoughts become your actions, or works, so the question you need to ask yourself is, “What are my major thought patterns? Are they positive or negative?”

Thoughts become emotions. Emotions, when not taken captive, become actions. Thinking about something frustrating? If you continue that thought process, your emotions will become frustrated. Then you will take your frustrations out on others.

If you want to upgrade to the next level of thinking, if you want to truly follow God and reflect Jesus in all you do, you have to work on controlling your thoughts. They really do lead down the road to actions and often, sin.

Lord God’s Banner of Love

Steeped in the Word

August 24, 2025 – 08/24/2025

8 – New Beginnings

24 – Perfect Government Made Manifest

The disciples went and woke him up, shouting, “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!” When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and the raging waves. Suddenly the storm stopped and all was calm. Then he asked them, “Where is your faith?” The disciples were terrified and amazed. “Who is this man?” they asked each other. “When he gives a command, even the wind and waves obey him!” Luke 8:24-25 NLT

Lord God’s Banner of Love

Most of us have heard of the 16 God names in the Old Testament, including Jehovah Jireh, the Lord is our Provider, or Jehovah Rapha, the Lord is our Healer. However, few have heard of Jehovah Nissi.

Jehovah Nissi means the Lord is our Banner. The banner it’s referring to is the flag on a battlefield. If you want to win the battle for upgrade and momentum, or to have victory in your life, learn to call on Jehovah Nissi.

Jehovah Nissi is the game-changing side of the Lord. He is the momentum changer. The Lord is our Banner speaks of a battlefield where suddenly, the momentum swings in your favor because the King’s banner has entered the fray. It means the King Himself is fighting the fight!

Everything changes when you see Jesus on your battlefield. It is from that momentum that you pick up your sword, get off the ground, and scream in the face of the enemy. When it comes down to it, the forceful part of moving forward in the Kingdom is to be taken head-on, never from your flanks or behind. There’s no need to cover your butt because your armor is for living life forward.

Read Ephesians chapter six and you’ll see the “full armor of God” covers everything but your backside. Why? Because moving forward, upgrade, progression, momentum – they are not for people who turn their backs to see what’s behind them. You and I are not meant to be Lot’s wife, looking back in longing for what she was leaving behind. We are to be the warrior Bride of Christ, positioned to move forward and win the battle under the banner of the King!

“Moses built an altar and named it The LORD is My Banner, and he said, ‘The LORD has sworn; the LORD will have war against Amalek from generation to generation.” Exodus 17:15

Which Wolf Do You Feed?

I am a Kingdom advancer. I will not look back but continue to move forward like a bulldozer moving the ground in front of it. I move Kingdom ground as He makes a way for others to come in. His banner over me is love, and I invite others to come share the love Christ has for us all.

Intentional Intimacy

Steeped in the Word

August 23, 2025 – 08/23/2025

8 – New Beginnings

23 – Being in the Presence of God (+) Death (-)

But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. Matthew 6:6 NKJV

Intentional Intimacy

Jesus gave specific instructions about prayer in this verse. The word “room” He uses in Matthew 6:6, tameion, is defined in Strong’s Greek Dictionary as a secret chamber, a place where you go for privacy, or a storage place, like a closet. All three of these concepts unmistakably emphasize the fact that this place should be private and cut off from the comings and goings of the household. It should be a place where the world can be shut out.

The sharing of a special, secret place is an intimate act in itself. If there is a place where you meet with one person, and with nobody else, that place becomes one of the hallowed sanctuaries of the relationship. The Lord wants intimacy with us.

Intentionality is when you do something by decision instead of by default. The power of intent is huge in the Kingdom. Being intentional means that you have determined to make something a priority.

The Scriptures in Matthew 11:12 tell us, and from the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force. This means we take the Kingdom by pressing in with intentional force.

We go places with specific purposes in mind. When we go to work, we’re there to work. When we go to the gym, we’re there to work out. When we go to our secret place with God, we should be there to spend time with Him, and for no other reason.

Going to specific places for specific meetings with God is all through the Bible. God told Abraham to go to an uncertain place before He would show him anything else. Moses had to go to the top of the mountain, Jesus told the disciples to meet Him in Galilee, and another time, to wait in Jerusalem for the Holy Spirit.

Jesus was intentional about going to the cross to offer us forgiveness and inviting us into a close, intimate relationship. Prayer done with intentionality and intimacy is our RSVP to our King.

Which Wolf Do You Feed?

Meeting with the Lord is the most precious part of my life. I intentionally meet in a place where I will not be distracted or interrupted and give Him my full attention. He is with me all the time, in every situation, but our intimate times of prayer are when I receive revelations and the fullness of His presence. I don’t want to miss a moment of time with Him.

Pastor Troy’s Declarative Prayer Over OpenDoor Church

Steeped in the Word

August 22, 2025 – 08/22/2025

8 – New Beginnings

22 – Personal Revelation

For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them. Matthew 18:20 NKJV

Pastor Troy’s Declarative Prayer Over Open Door Church

I declare that the Spirit of the Living God is in the people of this house.

Where there was darkness, there is now Light; there was darkness, now it is as bright as the noonday sun.

I pray in the name of King Jesus that wherever we have been defeated, You are releasing the way for incredible Victory. You, Lord, fight our battles and bring us every victory.

Any place where there is shame, You are redeeming, and there shall now be honor.

In every life you have rescued from horrible situations, there will be holiness and beauty. There will be no lasting effects on our lives from those places.

Lord, you have saved us, healed us, and set us free in every way a person can be free. Transform us into rescuers, Lord, and use us.

Open up the heavens and pour out your blessings on those who partner with us to be Your hands and feet.

I decree that You are establishing justice according to Your Word and Your ways for everyone who has experienced injustice, false testimonies, and wrong decisions made against them. Where we were wronged, You are making it right.

King Jesus, Sir, we delight in You and we know, Father God, Sir, that Your delight is to give us the desires of our heart. Create in every one of us a clean heart, align our hearts with Yours, Jesus, so that the desires of our hearts delight You and are fulfilled.

I declare over this house, God, that Your plan and Your purpose for our lives cannot be stopped because Your Word will not return to You void. You are blessing us with peace, unfolding a plan to prosper us, and filling us with hope.

We declare the Word of God is true; we are united and are the head and not the tail, above and not beneath, and highly favored of the Lord.

Hallelujah! We love you, Jesus!

Which Wolf Do You Feed?

Pray a-Latte

When you pray, go away by yourself, shut the door behind you, and pray to your Father in private. Then your Father, who sees everything, will reward you. Matthew 6:6 NLT
