Fear swept through the crowd as they saw this happen. And they praised God for giving humans such authority. Matthew 9:8 NLT

Always Awesome

Looking back is often dangerous, especially if it causes you to limit God’s power in the present and future. You need to take a good look at how great God has been in the past. When you look for Jesus in your past, you learn to see Him in your present and future.

Do you see the times He saved you from disaster? The blessings or favor He provided? Did He give you direction when you had none, or provide a miracle you’ll never forget?

Remembering how Jesus worked in your past is key to recognizing how He is working today and what He will do in your future. Sounds crazy, but think about the Cherubim, the tripped-out angels that circle the throne of God in heaven.

“Also in front of the throne, there was what looked like a sea of glass, clear as crystal. In the center, around the throne, were four living creatures, and they were covered with eyes, in front and in back. The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like an ox, the third had a face like a man, the fourth was like a flying eagle. Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under its wings. Day and night, they never stop saying: “‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty,’ who was, and is, and is to come.” Revelation 4:6-8

Their bodies were covered in eyes because they literally see God in the past, present, and future, all at the same time! Every time they circle the throne, they see how great God has been in the past, how great God is now, and how great He is going to be in the future. Living in eternity has its privileges!

I want to be like that. I don’t just want to see my past, I want to see how great God has been in my past! Once I see that, I want to see how great God is in every part of my life, forward from here!

Which Wolf Do You Feed?

Even In the Hard Places

Steeped in the Word

September 07, 2025 – 09/07/2025

9 – Fruit Bearing (+) Judgment (-)

7 – The Spirit of God

After this, I saw a vast crowd, too great to count, from every nation and tribe and people and language, standing in front of the throne and before the Lamb. They were clothed in white robes and held palm branches in their hands. Revelation 7:9 NLT

Even In the Hard Places

The year was 1995. Leanna and I were fixin’ to step off into the great unknown of ministry, but first, there were bills to pay. So I got a job working for a national rent-to-own outfit. Yes, I was a repo man! The money was good and, surprisingly, the opportunity to reach people for Jesus was even better! Through this job, people in the housing projects of central Fort Worth began to trust me as God took me into the homes of the poorest of the poor.

Imagine what this was like: I would knock on a door at 7 a.m. and a sleepy-eyed single mom would open it. “Mrs. Jones,” I would say, “I’m here to pick up your refrigerator.” She would look at me with disgust and explain that there was milk for her kids in the refrigerator and meat for dinner in the freezer. Then, I would explain that she had broken her contract and that it had taken me several weeks to track her down. I would be polite, even sympathetic, but firm. “I’m here to take your refrigerator,” I would say.

I can’t tell you how hard it was to walk past those kids without saying anything. And the absolute worst thing I could say was something like “God bless you” or “Jesus loves you.” I had to keep my mouth shut and be professional. It nearly killed me!

Now imagine how effective it was to show up at that same house when I was off work, with a gently used or refurbished refrigerator Leanna and I had bought from a second-hand store. Imagine the surprise on that mama’s face when I explained to her that earlier, I had been there in the name of my company, but this time, I was there in the name of Jesus!

The refrigerator was a free gift, “just like Jesus,” I would say. You would not believe the move of God that would follow. It was amazing!

These were special times for us. How about you? Are you in the middle of special times, showing Jesus to a hurting world in need? If you’re not, you should be.

Which Wolf Do You Feed?

Grace to Fight for Freedom

Steeped in the Word

September 05, 2025 – 09/05/2025

9 – Fruit Bearing (+) Judgment (-)

5– The Grace of God

For this light within you produces only what is good and right and true. Ephesians 5:9 NLT

Grace to Fight for Freedom

Some battles are so strategically important that the future itself hinges on that single event. San Jacinto was that kind of battle. Not only did Sam Houston’s decisive victory at San Jacinto establish Texas independence, but it also led to the Mexican-American War. Victory there resulted in America’s acquisition of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, California, Utah, and parts of Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas, and Oklahoma.

Yes, one-third of present-day America eventually changed sovereignty all because Houston and a handful of true Texas patriots – not even trained soldiers – dared to defeat the tyrant Santa Anna on April 21, 1836.

There’s a word of redemption in that. There is a reason people in Fort Worth, Salt Lake City, Los Angeles, and Albuquerque don’t have to live like our neighbors to the south in Matamoros, Juarez, and Tijuana. Someone paid the price for that freedom.

Do you know how important it is that you win the battles you’re fighting in your life? Unseen spiritual battles are being fought in brutal mental and emotional arenas in your life. Jesus has given you the ability to defeat the enemy because there’s a lot more at stake here than you probably think.

“For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ…” 2 Corinthians 10:3-5

As a Christian, you have to fight in order to occupy your territory – your marriage, emotions, finances, ministry, children, job – and to have victory in the territory God has given you. Your fight is spiritual and the majority of the battlefield is between your ears!

The Lord has given you mighty weapons of warfare – the words of Scripture. They are powerful and able to bring thoughts under control. Along with prayer and the Holy Spirit, they break down the mightiest stronghold and make you dangerous to the enemy!

Which Wolf Do You Feed?

Grounded in FaithDeclare!

I am redeemed and filled with the Light of Christ Jesus. I do not entertain dark thoughts; I take them captive to obey the Words of Jesus. I am victorious because Jesus has defeated my enemy. I won’t stand by and let the enemy take what Jesus died to give me. I am free because the Holy Spirit is Lord in my life.

Choose This Day

Steeped in the Word

September 04, 2025 – 09/04/2025

9 – Fruit Bearing (+) Judgment (-)

4 – Creation & Things That Are Made

We must quickly carry out the tasks assigned us by the one who sent us.The night is coming, and then no one can work. John 9:4 NLT

Choose This Day

The Bible tells us of Rebecca, the wife of Isaac. Now, Isaac was the promised son of Abraham and Sarah. Abraham had been told he would be the father of “many nations” and his descendants would be as “numerous as the stars.”

While it looks like Abraham got off to a slow start with one child, his son Isaac doubled that number. Rebecca was pregnant. Though likely overjoyed, she also knew something was stirring within her that would set in motion something big for her family. She felt a struggle going on inside her.

“Why am I thus?” – Genesis 25:22

This simple question is one we speak every day – “Why do I feel this way?” The Lord’s reply to her is the same as He would say to you and me. “Two nations are in thy womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels.”– Genesis 25:23

Rebecca was going to give birth to twins – brothers who would be total opposites in every way, especially spiritually. Isn’t that just like us as well? Aren’t there two voices inside us fighting over control of our thoughts and emotions?

In the battle of faith vs. doubt, grab onto the way of thinking that promotes faith. Cast down any cursed thinking. You see, blessings and curses are real. In the battle for your mind, you will only have victory if you speak blessings over yourself, your family, and your situation.

If you want a right mind, submit to God. Tell the devil and his negative way of thinking to pack up and hit the road. Your mental perspective can reveal the very mind of God. This allows you to line up your thinking with His, which is His will for you! Any time you are in synch with His will, you are victorious.

Which Wolf Do You Feed?

Jesus-driven thinking helps and heals. This is what the Bible has to say on the subject: For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. – Romans 8:6

An old Cherokee chief was teaching his grandson about life. He told the boy, “A terrible fight is going on inside me. It is a fight between two wolves. One wolf is evil. He is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and self-doubt."

A Wooden Wonder

Steeped in the Word

September 03, 2025 – 09/03/2025

9 – Fruit Bearing (+) Judgment (-)

3 – Perfect Completion

I was chosen to explain to everyone this mysterious plan that God, the Creator of all things, had kept secret from the beginning. Ephesians 3:9 NLT

A Wooden Wonder

I’m from a small town in Texas. From the age of six, I lived on a farm. If you know anything about farmers, you know they have a holy hatred of coyotes.

I will never forget 1972. It was the summer the local farmers went to war with these vermin and shot about 100 coyotes in one grand hunt. According to the myth that it would scare off other coyotes, all those dead carcasses were nailed to fence posts.

I will never forget this display of trophies. I tried to count them every time we drove down the road. I know the number was over 80 rotting corpses of fur and teeth, attracting a sky full of buzzards in the punishing heat. It was a terrible sight and left quite an impression on me. Now, I’m not six anymore, but I’m convinced God let that one event make a verdict in me that I can’t ignore. I call it my Vermin Verdict.

While disgusting, it was also fascinating. While a symbol of hatred, it was also a symbol of triumph, nailed to a piece of wood hung up for all to see.

Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”…) – Galatians 3:15

Jesus became a curse hanging on a tree for us. A gruesome trophy for the unbelieving Romans and the blinded Pharisees, but a sight of pure love and beauty to us whom He’s saved.

At the cross, Jesus was nailed down and then hung up so we could be blessed, not cursed. Yes, there is a mystery in how this works, but the picture of it is so striking to me. Something that was perfect became sinful, and what was blessed became cursed, so a knucklehead named Troy could be called perfect and blessed.

The cross is both horrible and fascinating. A wooden wonder you and I need to say “thank you” for.

Which Wolf Do You Feed?

Set Apart to Witness

Steeped in the Word

September 02, 2025 – 09/02/2025

9 – Fruit Bearing (+) Judgment (-)

2 – A Faithful Witness & Being Set Apart

And because I preach this Good News, I am suffering and have been chained like a criminal. But the word of God cannot be chained. 2 Timothy 2:9 NLT

Set Apart to Witness

If you can’t handle being despised when you haven’t done anything to deserve someone’s hatred, you can’t handle being a Christian.

Because God blesses His people, He shows favor to those who love Him. The world just can’t figure that out. He will cause a younger son to get the inheritance or a discarded wife to find the best husband in the world.

He will cause the tornado to miss your house when it destroys all those around it. Why? Because He loves to make a difference through and for insignificant people.

This doesn’t make others happy. They will become suspicious, even envious or hateful toward you. Why should you get a break when they don’t? Why should you be blessed when they are not? You shouldn’t have peace and joy because they don’t.

When you are hated by the world because you belong to God and He blesses you, don’t stop following God. Don’t let your detractors keep you from going after Jesus and all He has planned for your life. If you soldier on, He will make enemies who should defeat you, to become defeated. He will take the sickness that should kill you, and kill the disease. He will take your pain-filled head and turn it into a mouth filled with praise and wisdom.

When God stands up for His children, it makes people mad. When you are obviously blessed, others get upset and jealous. These are the facts of life in a world full of death. Know it and learn to deal with it through prayer and perseverance. Your example may lead to your enemy’s salvation.

“But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.” Matthew 5:44-45

Which Wolf Do You Feed?

It’s Not a Job, It’s a Life

Steeped in the Word

September 01, 2025 – 09/01/2025

9 – Fruit Bearing (+) Judgment (-)

1 – Unity

Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward, and that the Master you are serving is Christ. Colossians 3:23-24 NLT

It’s Not a Job, It’s a Life

“Without hard work, nothing grows but weeds” is an old but good saying. I have a crazy hard work ethic. When I hire people, I say, “If I have to motivate you, I won’t.” I won’t micromanage anybody. I cast the vision, say where I want us to get to, state the core values, and say what we make a big deal out of. Then I say – this is the finish line, now, sic’em! I totally expect godly people to be extremely hard workers.  My parents taught me that I had to work hard. A lot of people are just offended if they have to work hard; you have to get over that if you are a grown-up.

Starting work early is important. If you don’t work in your teens, it’s harder to build a strong work ethic in your 20s and 30s. You need to experience dealing with a boss who is a knucklehead, and people who are no fun to work with. You get up when you don’t want to, and do things you don’t want to do, so you can have things that you want. Learn what motivates you and avoid what doesn’t. That is just wisdom. This is something incredibly important that we need to teach.

The Lord God blesses pursuit and blesses hard work. It takes hard work to be a blessing.

I think the biggest deficit in the body of Christ, and the reason we live in a post-Christian culture in the United States, is that the world works harder than the church does. There’s a huge deficit of leadership in the body of King Jesus. We need people who have a vision and know how to carry out the vision and get kingdom stuff done.

My life is a gift from God, so I live a life that will produce Kingdom good. No matter what my job is, I do what I do for Jesus with excellence, a pure heart, and hard work.

Choose Life

Steeped in the Word

August 31, 2025 – 08/31/2025

8 – New Beginnings

31 – Offspring

Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings.  And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31-32 NLT

Choose Life

Why has God blessed you when so many around the world are hurting? That’s a good question. So are these:

– Why do you have so much, when people smarter than you have lost everything?

– Why have you never experienced imprisonment, torture or starvation when 500 million people around the world live that life right now?

– Why do you sit in a cushioned pew free from harassment, arrest, torture and death when three billion people have to worship God in secret?

These questions keep many from having a relationship with Jesus! They see life isn’t fair, so they think, “God isn’t fair, so He has to be bad. I don’t want anything to do with him!” What does God say about life being fair?

This is what He told His good friend Moses when Moses asked the same question: “He said to Moses, ‘I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.’” – Romans 9:15

In other words, “Life is not fair!” We live in a fallen world. We asked God to step aside while we run the show. Because we do such a poor job, He steps in. He extends mercy and compassion to different people in different measures and ways. The people of God should not look at the blessings of others and be jealous. They should celebrate the good that others have been given.

“Rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep. Be of the same mind, one toward another.” Romans 12:15-16

Envy and strife go hand in hand. “For where envying and strife are, there is confusion and every evil work.” – James 3:16

If you want your head to be distracted with strife, trouble, and conflict, want what other people have – that includes both natural and spiritual things. We live in a fallen world of our own choosing. So choose well.

Which Wolf Do You Feed?

Jesus-driven thinking helps and heals. This is what the Bible has to say on the subject: For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. – Romans 8:6

The Cherokee nation knew it, too. Check out this spot-on tribal tale:

An old Cherokee chief was teaching his grandson about life. He told the boy, “A terrible fight is going on inside me. It is a fight between two wolves. One wolf is evil. He is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and self-doubt."

The old man continued: “The other wolf is good. He is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith.” He then told the boy, “This same fight is going on inside you and inside every other person, too.”

The grandson thought about it for a minute, then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?” The wise old chief replied, “The one you feed.”

What wolf have you been feeding? Just know the wolf of evil thoughts will eventually devour you, and likely others as well. Thoughts become actions, and there is always collateral damage.

That’s not you! You can control your thought life and ensure the evil wolf starves to death.
et_pb_blurb"}">Choose Life
