Who is Pissing on the Graves of Our Dead Soldiers?
The ANC has put out an official statement rejecting with contempt the damaging and malicious claim by the Mail & Guardian that South African soldiers were sent to the Central African Republic to protect ANC business interest. They believe that this accusation is calculated to damage the image of the ANC and to sow distrust in noble decisions of the South African government that derive from public and transparent policies. According to the article in the Mail & Guardian, the lure of arms deals and diamonds and possibly other mineral resources – sucked the ANC into the Central African Republic.

South Africa at the Bedside of Mandela
Nelson Mandela aka Madiba is in hospital. Every time Madiba goes to hospital South Africa shudders so much so that the Presidents's office assures us that he is doing well. We need to accept that Mandela is at an age of senility. Lets face it South Africa and the world has taken enough from him. It is time to honour the man by letting him be. One day, we need to accept that Mandela will die and we will have to come to terms with it and yes, although it will be a day of great mourning, South Africa will still move forward as a country. Zapiro drew this powerful cartoon with a speech balloon saying "I know its hard but we have to start letting go". It was so powerful that after some thought the editors at The Times thought it was better to take the speech balloon away for their PRINTED edition and that one was eventually published. However what's meant to be will always find a way. The cartoon with the speech balloon on was inadvertently published online on the Timeslive site depsite the initial hesitation from the Times editors. Most reaction to the speech balloon (including phone-ins on the John Matham radio talk show )was positive. While some thought there was disrespect, there is NO disrespect. On the contrary. Zapiro's cartoon with the speech balloon shows respect.

Nelson Mandela aka Madiba is in hospital. Every time he goes to hospital South Africa shudders so much so that the Presidents's office assures everyone that he is doing well. Nevertheless we need to recognise that he is no longer young, that he is not well and is likely to die sooner rather than later. Zapiro drew a powerful cartoon with a speech bubble saying " I know its hard but we have to start letting go". Zuma's Leading Role in BRICS
South African President Jacob Zuma proudly hosts Chinese President Xi Jinping, Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at the 5th BRICS summit held in Durban. Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa make up BRICs or BRICS. The confusion arises from the fact that South Africa has sneaked into the group, which claims to represent the world's emerging markets and act as a counterweight to the G8 and G20, which are dominated by rich-world economies.

Zuma having CAR Trouble during BRICS Summit
One of the biggest events in South Africa this week is the BRICS Summit bringing together leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa in what is becoming a powerful development world forum. However just as this summit was to begin, news of 13 South African being killed in the Central African Republic (CAR) was announced. The question is no one seems to know exactly why 200 South African soldiers were there in the first place. The Central African Republic has been overrun by a rebellion.

13 SA Support Troops Killed in a Car
Ousted Central African Republic president Francois Bozize, flees after rebels take the capital Bangui. Zuma said that 13 South African troops had been killed in clashes with the Seleka rebels on the outskirts of Bangui. South Africa's sent a 200-soldier contingent to Central African Republic in January to support the government troops after the rebels launched an offensive in early December. Zuma said "As a member of the African Union, South Africa rejects any efforts to seize power by force." At the same time Zapiro's cartoon notes that Bozize had come to power in a military coup and questions why the 13 SA support troops were killed. The answe to the question is given in the article from the Daily Maverick - CAR fiasco: This is what we get for letting our government prop up a nasty dictatorship.

Human Rights Day 2007
In 2007, South Africa took up a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council. Many hoped this platform would provide an opportunity for the country to exercise its commitment to defend human rights in the world’s highest chamber. Alas, this was not to be. Although claiming to be concerned with events in Zimbabwe and Burma, South African officials resorted to technical arguments to prevent it from taking a stand on some issues. The tension between a commitment to human rights and the defence of South Africa’s national interest remains a bone of contention between those charged with making foreign policy and the country’s often vocal human rights activists.
