Pope Retires - New Elections in the Vatican

Pope Benedict XVI, in failing health, became the first pope in six centuries to retire. Benedict's decision has sent shock waves through the Vatican hierarchy. While celebrated for theological tracts, Benedict's leadership of the world's 1.2 billion Catholics was also scarred by scandals involving priestly child abuse and leaked papal documents. He leaves a church in crisis: from internal governance, to low morale, the sexual abuse, the loss of young people, all the older ones that have left, the evangelicals encroaching and secularists all over. Benedict's exit; comes as at least a dozen other cardinals tarnished with accusations for failing to remove priests accused of sexually abusing minors are among those gathering in Rome to prepare for the conclave to select a successor.

Stop Mislabelling Donkey Meat

While Western Europe reels from revelations that certain commercial meat products contain horsemeat, a study by a university in South Africa indicate widespread fraud in the labeling of its own country’s meat products. Scientists at Stellenbosch University reported that in more than two-thirds (68 percent) of the meat products they examined, they found traces of donkey, goat, soya bean, water buffalo and unknown plant matter in a survey of 139 minced meats, burger patties, deli meats, sausages and dried meats collected from butcheries and retail stores.

Hilton Botha

Detective Warrant Officer Hilton Botha, the officer in charge of the Oscar Pistorius murder investigation was destroyed during  the  cross-examination  by Barry Roux’s (Defence lawyer of Oscar Pistorius)  as he pointed out multiple examples of negligent police work at the scene and afterwards. Blunder examples by Botha were misjudgement of distances,  acknowledgement that the  forensics team left  one of the bullet slugs fired at Reeva Steenkamp in the toilet bowl , losing  track of illegal ammunition found inside the house and that Botha himself walked through the crime scene without wearing protective shoe covers, potentially contaminating the area.

The Meaning of CON in ICON

The London Daily Telegraph quotes He has a "dichotomous personality". Pistorius appeared disciplined on the track and in his battles with the authorities over whether he should be allowed to compete against able-bodied athletes, but his life was "far less structured" away from athletics. "We assumed that we knew him, found ourselves persuaded by his facade of smooth diplomacy, and yet it transpires we may have known nothing at all about the contradictions that lurked beneath." "A streak of pugnacity simmered under that placid exterior; would you believe his idol is Mike Tyson? This aggressive tendency is alleged to have manifested itself alarmingly in his personal life." Owen Gibson. of The Guardian quotes "Beneath the glossy image, and the sincere accounts of his humble nature, there were some signs of a more complex side to the inspirational tale of the poster boy for the Paralympic movement" The London Times carries a leader which states that "the reputation of a man hailed not only as a great Paralympian but as simply a great Olympian lies in shards, like a Lalique vase dropped onto marble". Pistorius was "an athlete who tilted the world of Paralympian sport on its axis". Now, "a man celebrated as a sporting hero has revealed his flaws. It is a further tragedy that Oscar Pistorius's heroic accomplishments now risk being buried along with his name." Jere Longman of the New York Times notes: "We are reminded yet again that it becomes risky to equate sporting accomplishment with heroism and incorruptible behaviour." ·
