Judicial Appointments - Dumb-Down Style

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC)is facing a crisis over transformation. The constitutional stipulates that the main criteria to appoint a judge is that individuals need to be "fit and proper" and "appropriately qualified"This should come before "need for the judiciary to reflect broadly the racial and gender composition of South Africa. What seems to be happening is that the latter is taking over from the former resulting in a mediocre choice of judges In a a report on transformation of the judiciary, Izak Smuts maintains there is a "very real perception in certain quarters" that the JSC was "set against" the appointment of white male candidates, except in exceptional circumstances. This statement and his resignation has caused a rift within the JSC.Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng has lashed out at critics of the JSC's selection methods. He said that the commission did not "play games" despite the picture created recently that it would "recklessly subject the South African public to a judicial officer who does not have what it takes".

Death of the Chris Hani's Vision

Chris Hani was the leader of the South African Communist Party and chief of staff of Umkhonto we Sizwe, the armed wing of the African National Congress. He was a fierce opponent of the apartheid government. On April 10 1993, he was assisinated outside his home in Boksburg. He was accosted by a Polish far-right immigrant named Janusz Waluś. Clive Derby-Lewis, a senior South African Conservative Party M.P. and Shadow Minister for Economic Affairs at the time, who had lent Waluś his pistol, was also arrested for complicity in Hani's murder. Both are serving life-sentances. According to Zapiro's cartoon Walus and Derby-Lewis may have assassinated Chris Hani but his vision of a fairer South Africa has been killed by the present day ANC leadership.

Obituary:Iron Lady - Rust in Peace

Obituary of Margaret Thatcher known as the Iron Lady.  A great champion for freedom according to Obama and others, except if you were a black South African, Chilean, British mine worker etc. Disliked by the poor, the workers and freedom fighters, admired by both her own supporters in the Conservative Party and her adversaries in opposition, she changed the political landscape in the UK during the '80s and influenced British politics thereafter.
