"Thank Mr President that was wonderful", from Tambo.

'People of the South’ presenter Dali Tambo interviews Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe on South African TV. Tambo's interview traces the President's life. The interview lacks critical depth, with many describing it as a public relations exercise and an attempt to whitewash Mugabe ahead of the elections.

Zuma speaks - Rand drops, further

South African rand sinks despite Zuma pep talk. The rand dropped to its lowest level in four years just a few hours after President Jacob Zuma spoke at an unexpected news briefing on Thursday. The local currency weakened to R10 against the US dollar, levels it last reached in March 2009. South Africa, the leading economy on the content, has one of the lowest growth rates in the sub-Saharan African region.

Career in the NPA?

The reputation of the criminal justice system is in tatters following the repeated failures of the National Proscetuting Authority (NPA) in high-profile matters. Referring to the NPA, the Council for the Advancement of the South African Constitution (Casac) issued a statement saying the organisation’s credibility "lies in tatters in the wake of a spate of seemingly botched cases" including those of Anene Booysen, Andries Tatane and J Arthur Brown. Chairperson Sipho Pityana also pointed to the Breytenbach case as an illustration of the bleak picture of the NPA which "suggests a toxic mixture of undue political influence and the incompetence of prosecutors".

Xenophobia Denial

Foreign-owned stores in Diepsloot were once again looted. Police were deployed to halt the attacks, but fears remain of a further spike in violence against foreign nationals in South Africa. Xenophobic attitudes are more pervasive than many are ready to admit. According to the Consortium for Refugees and Migrants in SA, attacks on foreigners have continued, with national statistics showing that, in 2011, one person a week, on average, was killed, while 100 were seriously injured and over 1,000 were displaced.

The Fate of Cosatu's Secretary-General

Cosatu's general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi has been accused of selling the old Cosatu house for under its value and for awarding a tender to an organisation, where his daughter is employed. In reality he is being attacked for not supporting Zuma at Mangaung. The Central Executive Committee of Cosatu meet this week to resolve the fight between the President, Sidumo Dlamini supporter of Jacob Zuma and the Secretary-General. An investigation into Cosatu's general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi has brought tensions to a boil between leaders in the trade union federation. The National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union (Nehawu), the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru), the SA Transport and Allied Workers Union (Satawu), Chemical, Energy, Paper, Printing, Wood and Allied Workers Union (Ceppwawu) and the SA Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) backs Dlamini and wants Vavi removed. Behind Vavi is the metalworkers' union Numsa, the Food and Allied Workers Union (Fawu), the South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu), the Democratic Nursing Association of SA and the South African State and Allied Workers' Union (Sasawu). Vavi's biggest asset is his popularity on the ground and that a congress with mass participation of ordinary workers could lean in his favour.

The Guptagate Report

Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Jeff Radebe presented the findings of the government probe into the illegal landing of a jet chartered by the Gupta family at the Waterkloof Air Force Base. He claimed that no ministers or President Jacob Zuma had been aware of what happened. Instead the inquiry found that two officials on "a frolic on their own" approved the landing of the private plane at the base. The report named the officials as Chief of State Protocol Bruce Koloane and a senior official at Waterkloof, Lt Col Christine Anderson. The report also said that an individual at the Indian High Commission "re-designated the wedding entourage as an official delegation" so that the base could be used "under the cover of diplomatic privilege". "The landing of the flight was a direct result of manipulation of processes and was undesirable."

Unregulated Initiation

33 deaths in Mpumalanga due to unregulated initiation. Thousands of boys in traditional South Africa are sent (and often willingly go) to initiation schools to mark the transition between boyhood and manhood, undergoing ritual circumcision and being instructed about their social responsibilities.  These ritual circumcisions are not performed by medically trained people, which leads to excessive bleeding.
