What operation did Manto actually have? Liver or Heart?
On 12 August 2007, four days after the controversial dismissal of her deputy minister, Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge, the Sunday Times ran an article titled "Manto's hospital booze binge" about a previous hospital stay in 2005 for a shoulder operation. The article alleged that she sent hospital workers out to fetch wine, whisky and food items. Tshabalala-Msimang threatened legal action against the newspaper on the grounds that they were in possession of her medical records. The paper defended its statements, stating that "a retraction was not under consideration". The article also reported speculation among "many top medical experts at state and private institutions, who refused to be named as they feared retribution from the health ministry" that her liver condition was alcohol-induced, cirrhosis.

Dina Pule Guilty of Lying to Parliamentary Ethics Committee
The Parliamentary Ethics Committee led by ANC's Ben Turok has found former communications minister Dina Pule guilty on all but one of the charges she faced and has found that she "wilfully misled" Parliament during its investigation into her conduct. The main issue in the case related to the intimate relationship between Pule and Phosane Mngqibisa, whose company, Khemano, benefited financially from the department. Pule gained the attention of Parliament’s ethics watchdog after two MPs asked that she be investigated after the Sunday Times and other newspapers reported allegations that Mngqibisa had benefited from the ICT Indaba that Pule's department hosted in 2012.

Arms Inquiry Adjourned
The Arms Deal has dominated South African politics for over a decade. The start of the first judicial investigation into the multibillion-rand agreement since corruption allegations first emerged in 1999, should have started on the 5th August after already being delayed by 4 months. Instead it has been postponed to the 19th August 2013 to resolve to see whether the commission could continue with just two commissioners, among other issues over confidentiality of documents. A potential breach of national security could sink the arms deal commission of inquiry before it even begins. The issue of the declassification of thousands of documents related to the 1998 arms procurement deal was raised again by lawyers for the Defence Department. The commission's evidence leaders apparently do not have the security clearances they need to examine classified documents.
