SABC blows R1.5bn

Financial mismanagement continues to ravage the SABC, with its latest annual report showing a failure to account adequately for R1.5-billion spent on consultants for services that could have been provided by its own staff. The auditor-general  said the SABC had recorded R106.3m worth of irregular expenditure, and there was no evidence of the collection of TV licence fees worth R913.8m. The cartoon has the SABC's acting chief operating officer, Hlaudi Motsoeneng watching the TV licence fees going down a bottomless hole. This lacunea was not the positive new he meant.

Policies of SA Adoption Agencies

There are an increasing number of orphans in South Africa. It has been reported that adoption agencies are accused of refusing to allow parents to adopt children because of their religion or lifestyle. Allegations that some agencies have homophobic and pro-Christian policies have sparked an investigation by the Human Rights Commission.

the VAVI Lamp

Back in 2008, COSATU and namely Zwelinzima Vavi supported Zuma when they thought he united alliance would allow its three member organisations - the ANC, Cosatu, the SA Communist Party - to retain their autonomy, engage robustly on issues and be given space to differ on policy and other matters. Vavi has been critical of e-tolling, labour broking, the youth-wage subsidy and the National Development Plan, which means that he has been critical of Zuma, who can't take the criticism. So it suited Zuma and his allies, when Vavi was suspended and put on special leave pending the outcome of a disciplinary hearing relating to an affair he had with a junior Cosatu employee, who accused him of sexual harassment. The cartoon plays on the word "suspension" and compares it to the 50 year old lava lamp an icon of the sixties, where its contents are in continious suspension.

King Mswati Visited by GOD!

Extracted from Zapiro Cartoon  130904tt

Manzini - Swaziland’s absolute monarch, King Mswati III, said he was visited by God at the weekend and this resulted in unseasonal electrical storms in the country - and a new name for the country’s controversial political system.

“The lightning was flashing even though it was (a time of year) when there is usually no clouds or rain,” Mswati said when he opened a trade fair in Manzini on Saturday.

Obama's dilemma - Military Intervention in Syria

In the wake of what appears to have been the large-scale use of chemical weapons by forces loyal to the Syrian President Bashar Al Assad, the United States and its allies seem to be approaching sort of muscular intervention into Syria’s civil war. Obama, who before taking office vowed to end the foreign policies of Bush, is now wrestling with some of the same moral and legal realities. Will Obama follow the policies of Bush 1 in 1991 and Clinton in 1999?
