Iran Nuclear Peace Deal

Despite protests and skeptism from Israel's Benjamin Netanyahu, Iran makes a preliminary agreement on its nuclear program with the five permanent members of the UN Security Council -- the United States, Britain, China, France and Russia, plus Germany. This could ultimately jead to a reintegration into the international community. In doing so, it would not only remove the threat of a debilitating war with Iran and prevent a nuclear arms race in the Middle East and North Africa but also return the Islamic republic to the center stage of the region's geopolitics.

The House that Jacob Built

Parliament’s Joint Standing Committee on Intelligence tabled a report detailing the reasons for R206 million in public funds having been spent to upgrade security at President Zuma’s residence. For example one of these claims was that Nkandla can be susceptible to strong earthquakes, on an average of one earthquake every 50 years, with occurrences at 5 to 6 on the Richter scale. They painted a picture of Nkandla as a place under siege – needing expensive new measures to combat the “high risk” of everything from firestorms and floodwaters to assassination, rape, air disaster and disease. .

Public Protector versus the Security-Cluster

Thuli Madonsela, the Public Protector has moved to take politicians out of the equation as she finalises her probe into the R206m upgrades at President Jacob Zuma’s Nkandla residence. She says I am "depoliticising" the investigation. She is determined to complete her investigation into the security upgrades at Zuma’s house and after considering 28 pages of security concerns from the JCPS cluster, the ministers would no longer be involved in the process.

The Story of Radovan Krejcir

Radovan Krejcir has decided to make South Africa his home. But trouble seems to follow him wherever he goes. Since he arrived in the country on a fake passport, the bodies of his alleged associates keep piling up. Kevin Trytsman, a private investigator, who allegedly provided intelligence services to Krejcir, was shot dead at his attorney's office. German supercar conversion specialist Uwe Gemballa was murdered. He allegedly helped Krejcir smuggle money into the country. Lolly Jackson was shot dead. He was allegedly involved in a multimillion rand money laundering scheme with Krejcir. Ian Jordaan, Jackson's lawyer and the man believed to be handling his estate, was killed. His body was found in a burnt-out car. Krejcir’s security consultant, Cyril Beeka, was also murdered. Krejcir has not been charged in connection with any of these murders.

Canned Lion Hunting

US TV presenter, Melissa Bachman sparked outrage after posting a snap showing her smiling as she posed with a gun next to the carcass of a male lion on Facebook and other social media. With the picture, she wrote: "An incredible day hunting in South Africa! Stalked inside 60-yards on this beautiful male lion... What a hunt!" A petition has been set up to bar Bachman from returning to South Africa after participating in a legal hunt.

Fallout Over Democratic Alliances Mistaken Vote

The Democratic Alliance (DA) is fighting to show a united front in the internal fallout over the party's apparent mistaken voting for the Employment Equity Act Amendment Bill. The DA backtracked over its support for the Employment Equity Amendment Bill in the National Assembly last week and has reshuffled its caucus as a result of the fallout. This was after DA members and leaders in various provinces last week expressed shock at the party’s position on the bill, with many warning they would withdraw their support. Lindiwe Mazibuko has admitted that the party’s flip-flopping over the Bill could cost it votes. Helen Zille said the DA supported black economic empowerment (BEE), affirmative action and employment equity, but with the proviso that they " fulfilled the intended purpose, which is to redress the legacy of apartheid".

Philippines Typhoon

Survivors of a deadly Philippines typhoon are attempting to get access to food and water, while the death toll has risen. Authorities are struggling to cope with the aftermath of one of the strongest storms on record. Typhoon Haiyan was a maximum category-five storm with gusts of up to 235mph. Authorities say in the city of Tacloban, Leyte, alone, 10,000 could be dead and 'two out of five bodies' are children. Tens of millions of pounds worth of aid has been pledged by countries around the world. Aid agencies say as many as 10million people could be in need of shelter, clean water and food. Mortuaries set up in remaining buildings like churches are overrun with bodies.

Madonsela Fights for Public Access to Nkandla Report

Four ministers (Public Works Minister Thulas Nxesi, Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, State Security Minister Siyabonga Cwele and Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa) made an urgent application to the North Gauteng High Court to stop Ms Madonsela from releasing the report based on compromising Zuma's security. Public Protector Thuli Madonsela says a court bid to delay the release of her provisional report on the "Nkandlagate" scandal is "unlawful, unconstitutional and violates the independence of her office&". Madonsela’s office said granting government extra time to respond would be an injustitice to those affected or implicated by the report -- in particular, those against whom she has made adverse findings.
