Big Pharma in Generic Drugs Row

South Africa slammed global pharmaceutical firms  over a covert campaign against its planned overhaul of intellectual property laws to favour cheaper generic drugs, accusing them of a "satanic" plot to commit "genocide". South Africa is in the final stages of implementing a new law that would allow generic drugmakers to produce cut-price copies of patented medicines and generally make it harder to register and roll-over pharmaceutical patents. The planned reforms will also close a loophole known as "ever-greening" that allows a drugmaker to make minor changes to an existing drug or discover a new use for it, and then register it as a totally new find.

Homophobia in Africa on the Rise

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria is the latest to sign legislation criminalizing homosexuality. In Nigeria - same-sex couples could face up to 14 years in prison. Uganda is waiting to see if its president will sign a new Anti-Homosexuality Bill passed by parliament in December. Under the bill, offenders could be imprisoned for life. 39 out of 54 countries in Africa now have anti-gay laws The bill also includes jail time for just providing services to those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. Many African countries inherited their anti-sodomy laws from colonial rulers. Some have since added stiffer penalties and sought to broaden the list of offenses.

ANC 2014 Manifesto

On January 8, 2014, the African National Congress released its 2014 Election Manifesto. The Manifesto is based on the ANC’s 53rd National Conference in Mangaung 2012, which called for decisive action to effect economic transformation and democratic consolidation.  While the ANC  have presented a  balanced list of election promises in its manifesto, it is felt by many that they have failed to rebuild its trust with voters. Corruption and Zuma's dubious reputation make the public sceptical and will still put off voters, despite the promises made at the ANC's manifesto launch.

Iqbal Survé - New Owner of Independent Newspapers

Iqbal Survé is the Independent News and Media South Africa (INMSA) and Sekunjalo chairperson. He accused rival Times Media Group of a "dirty tricks" campaign to rob his group of revenue and readers, and initially laid criminal charges against one of its editors and a reporter over a story. The story was about a preliminary public protector finding that the awarding of a fisheries tender by the agriculture, forestry and fisheries department, to Sekunjalo Marine Services Consortium, was improper. He also fired Alide Dasnois, editor of the Cape Times, who published a similar article. Critics have denounced the Dasnois dismissal as the most severe assault on press freedom since the apartheid era.

Our Presidents

Nelson Mandela was the first elected president of democratic South Africa. A hero to all South Africans, The second elected president was Thabo Mbeki, better known as Nelson Mandela's successor than by his own name. South Africans' feelings are strongly divided. Sympathy for, and gratitude to, Mbeki are matched by sentiments that a ruthless, paranoid leader has orchestrated his own fall.  Mbeki's coldness and closedness were supposed to have been defeated by Zuma at the Polokwane leadership contest in 2007: Zuma represented a populist touch Mbeki lacked and, it was alleged, possessed a more caring attitude towards the poorest of the poor – those who have not benefited from the "democracy dividend" that Mandela and his government set in motion.  Jacob Zuma, was elected as third  president. Initially popular,  he has now fallen to the point where he is is in danger of being impeached due to corruption and lack of real leadership.

Fraudsters at Mandela Memorial

The sign language interpreter at Nelson Mandela’s memorial says he suffers from schizophrenia and hallucinated and saw angels while gesturing incoherently just 3 feet away from President Barack Obama and other world leaders, outraging deaf people worldwide who said his signs amounted to gibberish.

Mandela Lying in State

Thousands of South Africans have queued to pay their respects to former President Nelson Mandela. The body of the anti-apartheid leader is lying in state at the Union Buildings in Pretoria. It is felt that President Jacob Zuma has misled MPs over spending on his Nkandla residence and therefore lied to the State.
