Quiet Diplomacy from South Africa
Events unfolding on Tuesday clearly exposed the brutality of the police
under Robert Mugabe and received strong condemnation from the international
community. Also at the receiving end of strong global criticism was South
Africa's President Thabo Mbeki, who has continued to refuse to make any
public statements against the authorities in Harare, despite the shocking
brutality of the police. Zimbabwe opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai was sent from court to hospital with a deep head wound on Tuesday as world outrage grew over the government's violent crackdown on political protests.

David Bullard - Out to LYNCH not LUNCH
Sunday Times journalist David Bullard was shot and wounded when four men broke into his Johannesburg house. Bullard, 55, had been shot once with the bullet going through his arm and into his abdomen. The four men had gained access to his house in Parkview through a bedroom window. While details are sketchy it appears that Bullard's wife was taken up to the bedroom by one of the robbers when a shot went off. The four men then fled though the same window, taking a handbag and cellphone with them. Bullard, who writes column in the Sunday Times, was reported to be in a stable condition. Bullard is known for his "Out to Lunch" column in The Sunday Times newspaper. It is thought to be one of the most widely read columns published in the country, at least in part because of Bullard's habit of insulting and infuriating the rich and famous.[

Israel Apartheid Week
Israeli Apartheid Week (IAW) is an international series of events that seeks to raise awareness about Israel’s apartheid policies towards the Palestinians and to build support for the growing Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) campaign. Not unsurprisngly, the IAW and BDS movement have both come under fire from Israeli groups who say the initiatives seek to "hurt Israel more than to help the Palestinian. cause, When Israel is called an Apartheid state, its defenders - including some South Africans - cite the absence of state-sanctioned racial segregation, and the presence of Palestinian parliamentarians, as evidence that Israel is not an Apartheid state. Defenders of Israel see Apartheid purely in South African terms, and conveniently ignore that Apartheid was defined in international law in 1973, when the UN adopted the International Convention on the Suppression and Punishment of the Crime of Apartheid (ICSPCA). According to ICSPA, Apartheid involves "inhuman acts" committed for the purpose of "establishing and maintaining domination by one group" over another, and systematically oppressing them. They depict Israel as a progressive state with vast natural resources, a booming capitalist economy, and a rich cultural life with ties to the West. In an attempt to deflect attention from the Apartheid issue and instead focus on "positive" traits, Israel claims it wants to share its agricultural and technology know-how with its neighbours. Israel's PR campaign, particularly in South Africa, is based on the "What can we do for you?" approach.

Eskom Load Shedding!
Eskom’s warning of possible renewed rolling blackouts is enough to chill the heart of any South African. 6 years ago “load shedding” caused billions of rands lost. As dark predictions of shedding resurface, are the lessons of 2008 completely lost?

J. Arthur Brown of Fidentia Arrested
Scorpions swooped on Fidentia kingpin. J Arthur Brown arrested. In the background lies a tangled web of burned cash, running to well over R1bn. The key victims of a massive scam conceived and perpetrated by Brown and his corrupt network are tens of thousands of widows and orphans registered under the Living Hands Umbrella Trust. In October 2004, R1,1bn belonging to the trust was transferred to Fidentia when Fidentia seized control of Living Hands Pty Ltd, the trust's administrator. This cash enabled Brown and his corrupt network to continue with a bizarre business model that appeared to be based on overpaying for acquisitions, in the hope that fresh cash could be seized to fund past peccadilloes. The business model was utterly unsustainable, and maxed out during the second half of 2006, when the Financial Services Board started to take various Fidentia whistleblowers seriously. n a cruel twist of fate for more than 100 000 widows and orphans, the R93-million paid by Fidentia to take control of the Living Hands umbrella trust administration company was paid with their own money. With an amazing sleight of hand, J Arthur Brown, the executive chairperson of Fidentia, managed to delay the cash payment for the trust company until he replaced the directors of the trust administration company and the trustees of the umbrella trust with his own appointees - and then took the money to pay for the purchase. Then he went on his now well recorded spending spree, buying up a diverse group of companies, both good and bad, and often paying ridiculous amounts with the rest of the R1,4-billion in the coffers of the trust. To make matter worse, Fidentia Asset Management claimed a R48-million take-on fee to put the money on Fidentia's books and commissions for the main directors, with Brown paying himself R4-million for pulling off the coup.

Interpol Symposium held in Johannesburg 2007
In March 2007, Interpol held a three-day training symposium in Johannesburg, which proved mildly embarrassing when Jackie Selebi’s minders attempted to prevent journalists from asking Ronald Noble, Interpol general secretary, uncomfortable questions about the alleged links of Selebi, then Interpol’s president, to the international underworld.

Africa's 50th Anniversary of Independence
Ghana turns 50 ton the 6th March 2007, and it's planning nationwide celebrations that will be attended by dignitaries from around the world. The West African nation was the first sub-Saharan African country to obtain its independence from colonial rule. Formed from the British colonies of Gold Coast and Togoland, Ghana achieved independence from Britain in 1957. But there are mixed feelings about Ghana's 50th anniversary — about its origins, its promise, and its current state. Ghana was considered by many as a beacon and a continental trailblazer, the first along the path to freedom for Africa. British Prime Minister Harold MacMillan described it as the "wind of change" that was followed by many more African countries over the next 20 years. Ghana's arresting red, gold and green flag — with the black star of freedom emblazoned in the center — is everywhere, adorning street lamp posts, fluttering in people's hands and on their cars, and used as scarves and belts.

Pistorius Trial with Lady Celeb Justice
It seems that Some South African trials such as the Pistorius trials get priority, while the majority of cases in South Africa have to wait their time with the accused having to sit in prison without bail. Zapiro's cartoon refers to the Oscar Pistorius trial. South Africa's biggest trial since apartheid puts a celebrity sportstar in the dock for the murder of his model girlfriend. But the cream of the country's legal system are also in the spotlight.Oscar Pistorius has hired a "dream team" .

Chicken Kiev - Russian Expansionism Waking Up?
Russia is flexing its muscles in Ukraine, its large and strategically important neighbour, sparking wide-ranging concerns within Europe from Russian expansionism to energy security. Russia looks at Ukraine in the same way that China looks at Taiwan: as an existential issue in which lines must not be crossed. Zapiro uses the Russian bear and and Chicken Kiev to symbolise the situation. The Russian Bear is a widespread symbol for Russia, used in cartoons, articles and dramatic plays since as early as the 17th century, and relating alike to Tsarist Russia, the Soviet Union and the present-day Russian Federation. In the dying days of the Soviet Union, President George H W Bush gave a speech in Kiev urging Ukrainian nationalists not to provoke Moscow. US conservatives dubbed it his “chicken Kiev” speech.
