Public Protector's Report on SABC

Financial mismanagement and maladministration, the wilful purging of staff members and an admission by SABC acting chief operating officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng that he did not have a matric certificate are some of the stark findings made by Public Protector Thuli Madonsela into the public broadcaster’s affairs. Madonsela released her report and found Motsoeneng's appointment was irregular, as was his salary progression. Madonsela found Motsoeneng rapidly increased the salaries of various staff members, resulting in the state broadcaster footing an unprecedented salary bill escalation of R29m. Madonsela said in the report: "He unilaterally increased salaries of Ms Motsweni, Ms Thobekile Khumalo, Mr Hannes du Buisson, and certain freelancers without following parts of the SABC personnel regulations."

20 Years of Achievements

President Jacob Zuma delivered, a firmly backward-looking State of the Nation. Sticking to the achievements of his past five years in office and the 20-year legacy of his predecessors. Lindiwe Mazibuko of the Democratic Alliance (DA) claimed Zuma had reversed the gains made by his predecessors, Nelson Mandela and Thabo Mbeki. She said he found “creative ways” to piggy-back off them.

Selling One's Soul to the Devil

The `Arms Deal` was never a single event. Rather it was, and still is, a series of scandals and outrages, all contributing towards a dubious momentum that takes South Africa further away from transparent democratic practice. Multi-billion dollar Arms Deal emerged out of criminal networks of both the apartheid SADF and the ANC`s security apparatus, raising questions as to whether South Africa’s remarkable transition was not oiled, at key points, by criminal intent and collusion.

To Booo or Not to Booo at SONA 2014

At the Nelson Mandela memorial in December 2013 and in front of 90 world leaders - including Barack Obama and David Cameron - the crowds booed Mr Zuma persistently. They stuck their thumbs down and even used rotating hand movements - normally used to call for substitutes at football matches. Now at SONA 2014 at the opening of Parliament, will this be an occasion for a nationally co-ordinated loud BOOOOOOOOOO timed to coincide during the speech. President Jacob Zuma will not get any opportunities better than when he delivers his final State of the Nation address of this term, to spell out for voters why they should put their cross next to his face in the coming elections. COPE's ;eader Lekota said  he expected Zuma would "piggyback" on the achievements of late former president Nelson Mandela and his successor Thabo Mbeki to hide the failures of his five-year term.

Missing Key Piece in the Case Against Radovan Krejcír

George Louca is accused of gunning down strip club owner Lolly Jackson and has been formally charged with his murder. He is also accused of being involved in organised crime linked to Radovan Krejcir. Louca is now facing charges of murder, money-laundering, racketeering and defeating the ends of justice. Georg Louca admits at being at the scene, when Lolly Jackson was shot and killed but does not admit to murdering him so who actually pulled the trigger? Could it be Radovan Krejcir.

Opening of Sochi Winter Olympic Games

Sochi, on Russia's Black Sea coast, welcomes about 2,900 athletes in 15 disciplines to the opening of the 2014 Winter Olympics. The build-up has been overshadowed by security fears, human rights concerns and delays to preparations. Russia has faced increasing pressure over its anti-gay laws ahead of the opening of the Winter Olympics in Sochi. More than 200 leading authors condemned the country’s ‘deeply worrying’ stance amid growing security fears. Their protest, in a signed letter, came after gay rights activists staged protests against the Russian government in 19 cities across the world.

Which Dummy Diplays Problem-solving Abilities?

A recent skills audit by PricewaterhouseCoopers has found that more than half of the SABC's executives and senior managers are unable to solve problems or make strategic decisions. According to the report, incompetence was worst at the top level and in the broadcast technology division. The report also revealed that: "60% of executives and senior managers did not meet the minimum requirements for strategic thinking at an executive level; 56% were not able to demonstrate adequate competency in solving problems and making decisions; 35% showed disregard for financial information, viewing it "at a superficial level". Parliament ripped into the SABC and its lame-duck quitting SABC CEO Lulama Mokhobo who appeared before it with a gaggle of other SABC executives including the famously matricless Hlaudi Motsoeneng as acting chief operations officer (COO), to report back on the utterly dismal independent skills audit report on the SABC
