SA's Most Famous Puppet Replaced by Nhleko
RANJENI MUNUSAMY of the Daily Maverick reports "Of course President Jacob Zuma was never going to pay back the money. It was just a matter of how he would wriggle out of doing so. He roped in the services of a hapless henchman, Police Minister Nkosinathi Nhleko. Nhleko perspired and mumbled his way through a 51-page document that can best be described as an assault on human intelligence to excuse his boss from paying for upgrades at his Nkandla homestead"

Nhleko : Need for a FirePool
Police Minister Nkosinathi Nhleko says an erratic municipal water supply and the prevalence of fires are reasons why President Jacob Zuma needs a fire pool at his Nkandla home. Nhleko's been briefing Parliament's ad-hoc committee on Nkandla in the KwaZulu-Natal legislature in Pietermaritzburg. He says Nkandla is prone to fires, citing incidents where an old age home and a boarding school in the area burnt down.

Zuma and the Nhkelo report
President Jacob Zuma does not have to repay the state a cent for the R246 million upgrade of his private home in Nkandla which has become the defining scandal of his presidency. This was the conclusion of a 50-page report released by Police Minister Nathi Nhleko which sets out a security purpose for all the features deemed luxuries by Public Protector Thuli Madonsela in her report on the project released last year, inlcuding the presidential swimming pool and animal enclosure at Nkandla.

Spanish Train Wins South African Tender
A controversy arose recently after Prasa imported 13 new diesel locos at a cost of R600-million as part of an order for 70 locos for R3.5-billion from Spanish manufacturer Vossloh Espaa. Prasa’s group CEO Lucky Montana has been axed while its engineering head Daniel Mtimkulu has been suspended with immediate effect for not being properly qualified for his post. Mthimkhulu claimed he studied engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand before going on to study in Germany to get his doctorate.

European Unity Being Broken By Greek Debt Crisis and Third World Refugees
As Europe struggles to keep Greece from default and to hold its common currency together, violent protests against immigration have strengthened the forces of disunion unleashed by an impassioned debate over how to deal with a flood of migrants from conflict zones. Greece might become the first country to leave the EU. While Greece is small, poor and does not stand at the centre of the world’s financial system or possess clout as a trading, diplomatic and military power, a Greek exit could be calamitous for Greece and calamitous for the EU. A Greek departure would mark the first unravelling of the process of European solidarity and integration which began more than 60 years ago. In practical terms, the loss of Greece would not damage the EU or European ideal beyond repair. But symbolically, it would say that European integration, or even European cooperation, can be placed in reverse gear. Grexit could this spell the beginning of the end of the common currency and put in question the whole project of a unified Europe. Europe is divided. The immense social cost of the austerity policies demanded by the surplus-generating Germany from less competitive economies of the South has put in question the political and social objectives of an “ever closer union” proclaimed in the Treaty of Rome, a founding EU document. At the end of June 2015, the Brussels summit looked for ways to spread the load of receiving hundreds of thousands fleeing poverty and war in Africa and the Middle East, the frontier rows across the 28-nation bloc were a reminder that the stakes are high.

Farlam Report : Omission of Inquiry
Forty-four peple were killed in Marikana in 2012 following a violent, unprotected strike at Lonmin mines. Ten people, including two policemen and two Lonmin security guards, were killed in the week leading up to August 16 when police shot dead 34 striking miners. President Jacob Zuma asked retired judge Ian Farlam to conduct an inquiry into the incident. Three years later the Commission had found, among others, that officials of Amcu had not exercised effective control over its members and supporters. Deputy President and former Lonmin director Cyril Ramaphosa and other members of the executive were let off the hook in the findings, but National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega is under scrutiny. A similar finding was made with regard to the former provincial police commissioner in the North West Lt-Gen Zukiswa Mbombo. Lawyer for the surviving workers Dali Mpofu had argued before the commission that Ramaphosa was the cause of the massacre, and that he should be held accountable. It had emerged in the days before the massacre that Ramaphosa had communicated with former mines minister Susan Shabangu calling for "concomitant action" against the strikers, describing them as "criminal". The inquiry also found that he executive including former police minister Nathi Mthethwa could not be held responsible for the tactical options employed by the police.
