Trevor Noah to Replace Jon Stewart in the Daily Show

South African comedian Trevor Noah is to replace Jon Stewart on The Daily Show. The 31-year-old made his debut as a contributor to the nightly satirical show last December. His first appearance took aim at racial tensions in the US, saying: "I never thought I'd be more afraid of police in America than in South Africa." Stewart announced he would be stepping down in January. He has hosted the influential comedy show for 16 years. The presenter has yet to set a timetable for his departure, but the selection of a replacement should make the task easier.

That Top Gear Guy

The Gurdian reports: Reinventing Top Gear post-Jeremy Clarkson is not as easy as just replacing one, or maybe three presenters. Their banter, on-screen chemistry and buzz took years to evolve and as one producer pointed out, it is not just a car show, it’s a sitcom.  Yahoo senior vice president, EMEA Dawn Airey, who was Channel 5 chief executive for Fifth Gear’s launch: said “It would be enlightened and delicious to think the BBC might recast Top Gear with three cultured, car-obsessed women. But I suspect the winning formula of three boorish lads, having a laugh, acting like teenagers in a lock-in at Majestic Wine will be replicated"

Removal of Colonial Icons

This week pressure by students has increased to move the statue of Cecil John Rhodes away from UCT. At the same time BBC's director general has confirmed that Jeremy Clarkson's contract will not be renewed after an "unprovoked physical attack" on a Top Gear producer. Many people feel that Jeremy Clarkson is a racist and homophobe who deserves to lose his job after a decade of embarrassing gaffes.

Bob Hewitt Trophies

Former tennis Grand Slam champion Bob Hewitt has been found guilty by a South African court of raping underage girls. Hewitt, 75, had denied two charges of rape and a third charge of sexual assault. The attacks took place in the 1980s and 1990s, when the Australian-born former tennis star was coaching the women, then young girls, in South Africa. Hewitt won nine Grand Slam doubles and six mixed doubles titles in the 1960s and 1970s. Judge sitting at South African court said evidence was 'overwhelming'. During the trial, Hewitt showed no emotion in court when one of his accusers testified about how he sexually assaulted her.

Helen Zille makes Journalists' Lives Hell

Several commentators have described Zille's conduct in the recent exchange as "abrasive" and "bullying", and it prompted a series of articles that took issue with her online persona, most notably from analyst Eusebius McKaiser and the Mail & Guardian's Verashni Pillay. In a recent article Pillay points out Helen Zille may be a former journalist as she loves to point out, but she is the ultimate media bully. Many journalists have had the unpleasant experience of Zille calling them up and screaming at them. Editors have had to endure her attempts to control editorial decisions with shrill, high-volume phone calls. And then there is the personal humiliation she likes to mete out. Perhaps Zille wishes she was still in the newsroom and able to issue instructions. Instead of recognising the independence of the media, she often engages in aggressive bullying tactics to get her way, freezing out those who won’t comply.

Cecil John Rhodes Statue pelted with Excrement at UCT

Students have tossed excrement on a campus statue of the British colonialist Cecil John Rhodes at the University of Cape Town in South Africa, calling the monument a tribute to the white domination of the past. Demonstrators have demanded removal of the statue and organized a “Rhodes must fall” campaign on social media. Memories of racial conflict are still fresh in South Africa, which shed white racist rule in 1994 after all-race elections. Rhodes, who died in 1902, was the namesake of Rhodesia, which became Zimbabwe after independence in 1980. He bequeathed land on which the University of Cape Town was built.

Proteas : Chokers No More!

South Africa, so often labelled World Cup 'chokers', completed an emphatic win by finishing on 134 for one with 32 overs to spare. Victory meant the Proteas had, after several heartbreaking reverses that started at the SCG with a rain-affected semi-final loss to England in 1992, finally won a knockout match at the World Cup. .A motion of no confidence in President Jacob Zuma was defeated in the National Assembly on 17th March 2015 when the ruling African National Congress used its majority to keep him in power. “The results of the division is as follows: yes – 113, no – 221, abstain – 8. The motion is therefore not agreed to,” Speaker Baleka Mbete announced after the vote.
