Who Gets Out of Jail?

Oscar Pistorius may soon be out of prison. Should we really be surprised? Reeva Steenkamp died alone and terrified. She was 29, and should have been able to look forward to many years of life. Instead, she died behind a locked toilet door that could not protect her from a man armed with a powerful weapon. It has now been revealed that her killer, the Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius, is likely to be released from prison in August this year, after serving only 10 months of a five-year sentence for culpable homicide.

FIFA Bribery Scandal - Defending South Africa's Honour

The hosting of the 2010 Soccer World Cup in South Africa has been thrown into the international spotlight after a US indictment accused two "high-ranking South African football and government officials" of offering cash for votes in order to secure that the tournament was held in South Africa. The indictment accuses the two officials, named as Co-conspirator #15 and Co-conspirator #16, of bribing Jack Warner on two occasions – the amounts totalling $10 million. However South African co-conspirators 15 and 16 have avoided being named and shamed. Leaving evrybody guessing who they are. The Mail & Guardian narrowed it down to just eight people: 2010 bid chief executive (and new Port Elizabeth mayor) Danny Jordaan, 2010 bid chairman and Orlando Pirates boss Irvin Khoza, Naspers chairperson Koos Bekker, sports promoter Selwyn Nathan, lawyer and ENSafrica chairperson Michael Katz, former South African Football Association (Safa) chief executive Raymond Hack, Kaizer Chiefs chairperson Kaizer Motaung and former Safa president Molefi Oliphant. Just after the scandal broke, Fikile Mbalula, South Africa's Minister of Sport went declared in public that South Africa did not pay any money. He later chnaged his tune when evidence was brought forward and said the $10 million (R1.25 billion) payment had been made with respect to the obligation South Africa felt towards the African diaspora. Now former Safa boss Molefi Oliphant has accused Safa president Danny Jordaan of betraying him. Oliphant, who was the president of South Africa’s soccer governing body when the nation won the rights to host the 2010 World Cup. Furthermore a damning paper trail also shows that the controversial $10-million "bribe" that allegedly secured South Africa the 2010 World Cup was negotiated between then-president Thabo Mbeki and Sepp Blatter.

Mbalula's SA 2010 Football Cards

Sports minister Fikile Mbalula re-iterates that US$10 million was just a donation and did not buy votes for 2010 bid. South Africa denied on Wednesday it bribed Fifa officials with $10m to secure votes for its successful bid to host the 2010 World Cup, insisting the payment was “above board”. Mbalula also admitted he was “shocked” by the resignation of Fifa’s president, Sepp Blatter. He said Blatter “has been a good friend of South Africa” and “history will remember him” for bringing the World Cup to Africa for the first time. “We won the bid clean,” “We had our Madiba [Mandela’s clan name], we had the bishop [Desmond Tutu], we had the spirit of our people, we had the world. After all, it was Africa’s time.” Mbalula confirmed $10m was paid to the former Fifa official Jack Warner in 2008 but insisted it was not a bribe, as US prosecutors allege. It was given as an “above-board” donation to support the building of a football centre for people in the African diaspora in the Caribbean, he claimed. This was alongside $70m of donations to the African continent because, he said, the World Cup had always been billed as benefiting all Africans.

Sepp Blatter Resigns From FIFA Presidency

After 17 years as head of FIFA, Sepp Blatter announced his resignation amid the corruption scandal that has rocked world football's governing body. So Sepp Blatter's gone? Not really Not for another six to nine months, at which point a new FIFA president will be elected. But yes, Blatter has resigned saying he will step down from football's governing body once a new president is elected. Seemingly in denial, Blatter is reported to have said on the 29th May he told an interviewer on Swiss television: “Why would I step down? That would mean I recognise that I did wrong.”

Danny Jordaan admits $10 million payment but denies bribe claims

The president of the South African Football Association, Danny Jordaan, has denied the country bribed Fifa officials to help secure the 2010 World Cup through payments worth $10m. The awarding of the 2010 tournament to South Africa has come under scrutiny following a series of bribery charges against Fifa officials by the US authorities, who have made 14 arrests. Jordaan told the Sunday Independent. “I haven’t paid a bribe or taken a bribe from anybody in my life. We don’t know who is mentioned there (in the indictment),” “How could we have paid a bribe for votes four years after we had won the bid?”, adding the payment was South Africa’s contribution towards CONCACAF’s football development fund. Warner was then also president of CONCACAF.

Nkandla MiNionSTERiAL Report

Police Minister Nkosinathi Nhleko and Public Works Minister Thulas Nxesi released a new Nkandla report justifying expenses such as a cattle kraal, chicken run, amphitheatre, swimming pool and visitors’ centre as crucial security measures at President Jacob Zuma’s rural homestead. Nhleko has determined that President Jacob Zuma is NOT liable to pay a portion of the security upgrades to his Nkandla homestead. Civil society organisations voiced their objections, political commentators said it was a miscalculation to think the Nkandla debacle would be closed now, even as the report showed up weaknesses in the country’s political system.

FIFA Corruption Crisis: Sepp Blatter Denies Responsibility.

Fifa president Sepp Blatter has condemned the "action of individuals" for bringing "shame and humiliation" on football in a corruption scandal. But he said that although many held him "ultimately responsible" for the football community, he could "not monitor everyone all of the time". Mr Blatter has faced calls to quit but is seeking re-election on Friday. Blatter said: "The actions of individuals bring shame and humiliation on football and demand action and change from us all.

Fifa Corruption

Fifa in crisis amid corruption arrests and World Cup voting inquiry. Nine Fifa officials and four executives of sports management companies were arrested on suspicion of receiving bribes totalling $100m (£65m), according to the US Department of Justice. Fifa president Sepp Blatter was not among the accused. Fifa spokesman Walter de Gregorio told the Associated Press: “He is not involved at all.” The officials are accused of taking in excess of $150m in bribes stretching back 24 years. US prosecutors said the officials conspired with sports marketing executives to “shut out competitors and keep highly lucrative contracts for themselves through the systematic payment of bribes and kickbacks”.

Release of the Marikana Report

Jacob Zuma says findings of official inquiry into deaths of 34 mineworkers shot by police will be revealed by end of June. The shootings by police in August 2012 left 34 mineworkers dead and more than 78 injured on what has been described as South Africa’s darkest day since the end of apartheid. Zuma parliament “I know and appreciate the anxiety of those who are affected. However, it would be inappropriate for me to just release the report without applying my mind sufficiently.
