King Goodwill's Red Carpet

King Goodwill Zwelithini – in a speech delivered in March – fanned the hatred and envy among some South Africans towards black foreigners living in our country. In his speech the King identified what he perceived to be the problem (“lazy” South Africans; foreigners “dirtying our streets”) and proposed a way to “fix” the problem: To have all foreigners (whether legally documented or not, whether law-abiding or not; whether refugees fleeing wars or not) pack their belongings and go back to their own countries.

Welcome to the Land of Xenophobia

Xenophobia: panic grips South Africa. he Joburg city centre was on a knife edge for most of Wednesday, with many shopkeepers shutting their stores as fears of renewed xenophobic attacks in Gauteng surfaced. A brazen text message circulating on social media networks warning foreigners to heed Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini’s call and “return to your home countries” heightened fears of renewed attacks on foreigners in Joburg.

King Goodwill on Xenophobia

RANJENI MUNUSAMY of Daily Maverick reports: Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini has up to now not said anything that has had a major impact on life and politics in post-democracy South Africa. He has just been there, presiding and chewing up a large proportion of KwaZulu-Natal’s budget. Suddenly His Majesty has been catapulted in the spotlight after his royal musings sparked a wave of violent xenophobic attacks. It is has fallen on government and the police to try to contain the violence, with even the security cluster ministers trundling out trying to clean up the mess. The king, meanwhile, has been the one receiving an apology instead of making one.

Apartheid Monuments - Oom Paul Kruger

How South Africa confronts symbols of its difficult past is now being discussed in newspaper columns, television talkshows and mainstream politics. The Guardian reports attacks began a month ago when a student at the University of Cape Town flung a bucket of excrement over a statue of the British colonialist Cecil John Rhodes, which had enjoyed pride of place on campus since 1934. This sparked a vocal “Rhodes must fall” campaign, involving marches and sit-ins, that led to the huge bronze being removed from its plinth before ululating crowds, some of whom splashed it with red paint or held placards saying “more than a statue”.The radical Economic Freedom Fighters party, led by the firebrand Julius Malema, vigorously joined the movement. Its followers daubed paint over statues of the former South African leaders Paul Kruger and Louis Botha in Pretoria and Cape Town respectively

Student Massacre in Kenya - Al-shabab

The attack at a university in Garissa killed 147 people, mostly students. The Al-Shabaab militant group claimed responsibility. Using the hashtag #147notjustanumber, Kenyans used social media to talk about the lives of the victims. They shared pictures of beaming faces, full of life and energy, in happier days. They talked about parents too shocked to speak after identifying their children's bodies.

Hofmeyr's Affidavit May Save Zuma

The National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA’s) deputy national director, Willie Hofmeyr, revealed in minute detail how the NPA became an "instrument" in political battles in the African National Congress (ANC). He did this in an affidavit justifying the controversial 2009 decision to drop corruption charges against President Jacob Zuma. In the affidavit, Hofmeyr alleged that Leonard McCarthy, then the head of the now defunct Directorate for Special Operations (the Scorpions), spoke to the then national director of public prosecutions, Bulelani Ngcuka, and former intelligence minister Ronnie Kasrils about the planned prosecution of Zuma. The affidavit describes Kasrils and Ngcuka as conduits between the NPA and Mbeki

Cosatu Crucifies Zwelinzima Vavi

Cosatu’s Central Executive Committee meeting votes to dismiss Secretary General Zwelinzima Vavi, who has been under intense pressure within Cosatu after the majority of unions voted to expel the National Union Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) last year. At least 31 members of the CEC voted to dismiss him while only one member voted against that decision. The question now is Can Vavi capture the working class vote. While Cosatu president Sidumo Dlamini believes that the overwhelming vote in favour of Vavi’s dismissal is a sign of “unity” in the federation, others in the ANC, are less confident that all will be well with Vavi cut loose and able to agitate outside the alliance. There is an expectation in some quarters that Vavi can comeback to bite with support of disatisfied workers.Stephen Grootes of the Daily  Maverick says "It’s a catalytic moment on two fronts, both politically, and for worker/boss relations".
