The Absurb Contradiction of Gigaba'sMigrant Awards with the Governments Operation Fiela

Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba has launched the inaugural South African Migrants Awards aimed at nurturing tolerance and social cohesion following the recent spate of xenophobic violence in the country. On the otherhand the South African government has introduced the new operation Fiela. Sally Hurt writes in the Daily Maverick: Xenophobia, and the government’s response to it, is back in the headlines. The police, army and officials from the Department of Home Affairs have staged several joint operations under the banner of Operation Fiela-Reclaim, and while many South Africans have welcomed this very public show of force, it points to deeply-rooted prejudices within our state machinery. Acting Cabinet Spokesperson PHUMLA WILLIAMS regarding the status of Operation Fiela-Reclaim. Fiela forms part of our overall strategy to ensure that all people in South Africa are and feel safe. Allow me to place on record what Fiela aims to achieve. Fiela is an operation to rid our country of illegal weapons, drug dens, prostitution rings and other illegal activities. It is by no means a silver bullet, and is but one aspect of a much larger drive to ensure a safer South Africa.

Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa Announces New Deal on E-Tolls

Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa announced some changes to Sanral’s controversial e-toll system. Ramaphosa says: "All these concessions have been done in order to ensure that the system is able to move forward. If we are doing something that addresses the concerns of people‚ that is what we should focus on." Ramaphosa also announced that e-toll fees will be linked to licence renewals — so motorists cannot get their car discs unless they’ve paid their e-toll bills. Wayne Duvenage‚ formerly of the Opposition To Urban Tolling Alliance (Outa)tweeted “New e-toll dispensation is tantamount to putting lipstick on a pig. People will not be seduced or coerced. Scheme still grossly irrational‚” Robert Marawa‏ (@robertmarawa) also took to twitter to say: “Ridiculous. U renovate a house without consulting the owner then demand payment!! Life must really be good", while Deep Fried Man‏ (@DeepFriedMan) commented “I think it's really great how the ANC and SANRAL doing their bit to reduce carbon emissions by making owning a car unaffordable”.

Johnny Depp's Attempt to Smuggle his Dogs into Australia

Australian agriculture minister Barnaby Joyce gives Pirates of the Carribean star, Johnny Depp, a 50-hour deadline to remove his dogs, Boo and Pistol, from Australia. The actor had allegedly brought them in illegally, but jetted out of Australia on Friday night just before time ran out. The pets, Pistol and Boo, unwittingly caused an international incident when Depp failed to declare them at Australian customs and allegedly brought them into the country without following the proper biosecurity processes. The Agricultural minister said "If you start letting movie stars — even though they've been the sexiest man alive twice — to come into our nation (with pets), then why don't we just break laws for everybody?"

Burundi's President's Interpretation of Its Constitution

While President Pierre Nkurunziza was stuck in Dar es Salaam tweeting up a storm, his former intelligence chief powerful General Godefroid Niyombare launched a coup, in a culmination of weeks of violent street protests against the president's bid to seek a third term. Many welcomed the coup, celebrating in the streets of Bujumbura. Hundreds of people in Burundi have protested in the capital Bujumbura after the country&'s ruling party nominated President Pierre Nkurunziza to run for a third term. Burundi’s constitution stipulates that a president can only serve for two terms, but Nkurunziza’s party says he is eligible for another term as popularly elected president because for his first term he was elected by lawmakers. Critics say this is not a proper interpretation of the law and that he should not get a third term. A former rebel leader, Mr Nkurunziza took office in 2005 following the end of a 12-year conflict, which killed more than 300,000 people. He was re-elected in June 2010 but the vote was boycotted by the opposition, which complained of fraud in the earlier local elections. Opposition leaders and international observers have since complained of a growing crackdown on opposition parties and the media.

Resevoir Dogs - The NPA Movie

The inquiry into whether the prosecutions boss, Mxolisi Nxasana fit for the job has been terminated just as it was due to begin, on the orders of the president. The commission’s chairperson, advocate Nazeer Cassim, told a room of legal representatives and reporters on Monday morning that he had received a message from the presidency “late last night”, in which he was told to “cease the inquiry”. “My mandate is terminated. The instructions came late last night – in fact, in the early hours of the morning,” Cassim said. “So I opened the inquiry, and I am now closing it.” Resevoir Dogs is a 1992 movie where a group of thieves assemble to pull of the perfect diamond heist. It turns into a bloody ambush when one of the men turns out to be a police informer. As the group begins to question each other's guilt, the heightening tensions threaten to explode the situation before the police step in.

Allister Sparks Compares Helen Zille to Hendrik Verwoerd

Veteran journalist Allister Sparks, likened Helen Zille to the widely despised chief architect of apartheid, Hendrik Verwoerd. Sparks’s admiration for the father of grand apartheid seen as a gaffe embarrassed all concerned at the top of the Democratic Alliance hierarchy. He said "In the course of (this), I've encountered some really smart politicians - Harry Lawrence… Margaret Ballinger, Helen Suzman, Zach de Beer, Frederik van Zyl Slabbert, Marais Steyn, Japie Basson, and, yes, Hendrik Verwoerd. But, after all those years, I have to say, objectively viewed (and) setting aside my personal friendship, I rate Helen Zille as the smartest political tactician of all."

Schabir Shaik Application Request For Better Parole Conditions Turned Down

President Jacob Zuma’s former financial adviser, Schabir Shaik is considering turning to the courts to have the parole board’s decision to reject his application for less stringent parole conditions overturned. He said "This follows the board’s decision last week to reject the convicted fraudster’s application to have his medical parole converted to normal parole conditions. “There are many other avenues, including the courts – it is not the end of the road.” Six years after being released on medical parole, convicted fraudster Schabir Shaik made the audacious request to have his medical parole converted to ordinary parole. President Jacob Zuma’s former financial advisor was convicted of fraud in 2005 and sentenced to 15 years in prison on each of two counts of corruption and another three years for fraud. He only served two years and four months of that jail sentence, the majority of it in a hospital environment. The request is unprecedented in this country and appears to be a complicated issue of law. Technically, he would be eligible for parole after serving half of his original prison term, which in theory he has. However, the Correctional Services Act doesn’t provide for the cancellation of medical parole or for a prisoner to be sent back to prison if his health improves.

The Ludovico Technique Cure for Axed Wits SRC President

Mcebo Dlamini, the SRC President at Wits came under the media spotlight for posting a photo on Facebook and comparing the Israeli government to the Nazi regime. He said “In every white person there is an element of Hitler…” Dlamini defended his remarks and said he “admired Hitler’s organisational skills” and was looking at “Hitler’s good side”. After this incident, the Wits Vice Chancellor Professor Adam Habib that SRC President Mcebo Dlamini had been removed from office with immediate effect. Habib explained that his decision was not based on Dlamini’s Facebook comments in which he declared his love for Hitler’s organisational skills but charges that were laid against the SRC President and for which he was found guilty by a Student Disciplinary Committee before these remarks were made.

The Ludovico technique is a fictional aversion therapy from the novel A Clockwork Orange administered by a "Dr. Brodsky" at the Ludovico medical facility. It involved forcing a patient to watch, through the use of specula to hold the eyes open, violent images for long periods, while under the effect of a nausea-, paralysis-, and fear-inducing drug. The aim of the therapy was to condition the patient to experience severe nausea when experiencing or even thinking about violence, thus creating an aversion to violent behaviour.

Flip-flop Support for Referendum on Death Penalty by Pastor Mmusi Maimane

By selecting the subject of the death penalty, Mmusi Maimane has opened the way to a potential political and legal minefield by saying he initially supported a referendum on the death penalty. Two days later he backed down. Business Day in an editorial published "It is contentious because the Constitutional Court, in a seminal judgment in the first case it heard in 1995, set out why the death penalty undermined the kind of society envisaged by the Constitution and why public opinion should not sway the court on the issue." The Constitutional Court said: "The rights to life and dignity are the most important of all human rights, and the source of all other personal rights in Chapter Three. By committing ourselves to a society founded on the recognition of human rights we are required to value these two rights above all others. And this must be demonstrated by the state in everything that it does, including the way it punishes criminals. This is not achieved by objectifying murderers and putting them to death to serve as an example to others in the expectation that they might possibly be deterred thereby."
