Xenophobia has again reared its ugly head in Johannesburg with foreign nationals reporting looting of their shops and being forced to leave their shops under heavy police guard. . Local residents targeted Somali, Ethiopian and even Pakistani-owned shops in the area, forcing foreign shop owners to leave the area out of fear, local media reported on Friday. The latest incident has prompted fears of a resurgence in xenophobic attacks, but authorities have steered clear from framing the attacks as hate crimes targeting foreigners. Gauteng police commissioner Lt-Gen Lesetja Mothiba said "The youth are the instigators behind the looting of foreign-owned shops in Soweto"

In Davos at the World Economic Forum, South African President Jacob Zuma tried to dissipate fears that Africa as a whole is unsafe for doing business. AB de Villiers Hits the Records out of the Park
South African top order batsman AB De Villers - the current captain of his national ODI team, and the world's top ranked batsman in the format - casually managed to not only break, but annihilate the record for the fastest ever One Day International century in a game against the West Indies at the Wanderers stadium in Johannesburg. De Villiers innings comprised of 149 runs off an astonishing 44 deliveries, with the century coming in a world record 31 balls, far eclipsing the previous mark set by New Zealand's Corey Anderson who reached triple figures off of 36. De Villiers also set the world record for the fastest 50 ever achieved in an ODI in the process, bludgeoning the first half century off just 16 deliveries.

ANC's 103 Birthday Bash and the Praise Singers
The ANC celebrated their party’s 103rd birthday in Cape Town. There was much black, green and gold in the streets of Cape Town as ANC leadership and supporters flooded into the city to celebrate. Independent Newspaper's Group Executive Editor, Karima Brown and Group Editor of Opinion and Analysis, Vukani Mde, posted pictures of themselves decked out in ANC regalia attending the party’s 103rd celebrations in Cape Town. The question is how independent are Independent Newspapers. Marianne Thamm writes "Both Brown and Mde are experienced journalists who have covered the political landscape for several publications for many years. They both bring unique insights into the workings and troubles of the ruling party. But while there is a significant difference between standing for political office and donning the colours of a political party at a rally, one must question both these senior editors public display of their political allegiances."

Join the Dots - DIY - Freedom of Expression
Join the dots by number n the above cartoon and see the result. The publishers of Charle Hebdo have been defiant. The new cover of Charlie Hebdo centres on an image of the Prophet Muhammad, who is weeping and holding a sign which declares: 'Je Suis Charlie'. Around three million copies will be published for French kiosks and around the world – including 1,000 copies for British newsagents – the biggest print run in the magazine's history. The decision to publish the cover with a cartoon of Prophet Muhammad has sharply divided opinion among politicians, journalists and Muslims today over whether the publication was right to take such a tough stance. Two African newspapers have apologised for publishing Charlie Hebdo's cover depicting the Prophet Muhammad, after an outcry from Muslim readers. Kenya's The Star and South Africa's The Citizen said they regretted any offence caused to Muslims.

Goodluck Jonathan - Je suis Charlie mais je ne suis pas BAGA
Nigeria's president was among leaders who condemned last week's attack by Islamic extremists on the French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo, yet his response to the slaughter of civilians by militants in his own country has been muted. Some commentators criticized President Goodluck Jonathan's reticence about the violence in Nigeria's Baga town, and the lack of a broader international outcry on par with the reaction to the attacks in France. The slogan "I am Baga" — a play on "I am Charlie," the expression of solidarity with the targeted French weekly — is now circulating on social media.

Extremists Can't Kill Charlie Hebdo's Ideas
Masked men armed with rifles stormed the headquarters of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in the heart of Paris and killed 12 people. The dead included four political cartoonists, editor in chief Stéphane “Charb” Charbonnier and two police officers. Charbonnier received numerous death threats from Islamic extremists. The attack appears to have been in response to the magazine’s frequent publication of cartoons mocking the Islamic prophet Muhammad. One gunman reportedly shouted, “We have avenged the prophet Muhammad, we have killed Charlie Hebdo” as he jumped into a getaway car. Supporters of free speech used the slogan "Je suis Charlie" (French for "I am Charlie") against the shooting. The slogan identifies the speaker with those who died at the Charlie Hebdo shooting, and by extension for freedom of speech and resistance to armed threats. It was used as the hashtag #jesuischarlie on Twitter, as printed or hand-made placards, and displayed on mobile phones at vigils, and on many websites, particularly media sites such as Le Monde. Je suis Charlie quickly trended at the top of Twitter hashtags worldwide following the attack. Cartoonists across the world have flooded the streets and the internet with powerful drawings in defiance of the armed gunmen who attempted to silence Charlie Hebdo.
