The High Cost of Mr. Prez

The numerous alleged scandals engulfing President Jacob Zuma and the ANC administration have affected South Africa’s perception in the eyes of the world. South Africa is perceived to be a corrupt country. The Nkandla scandal, the Spy satellite and tapes saga, the Gupta scandal, and the Arms deal are examples of high-profile and embarrassing state of affairs for South Africa. The reputation of a democratic country is tarnished, and the international standing as a state for stable investment is volatile.

The Meaning of ZumaGlue

In December 2007, Zuma was swept into power at Polokwane based on his personality rather than on any specific political strategy. As a populist he had the support of the majority poor, the SACP and the Unions.

Eskom - Changing the Name from Megawatt to Microwatt Park

Eskom revealed that power cuts would continue for months, Eskom CEO Tshediso Matona spoke of plans to put the squeeze on consumers for even more cash to pay for years of bungling at his organisation. Officially Eskom states on its web site The South African economy grows constantly, and as it grows, the demand for electricity increases. Every new factory, shop, office or home built needs electricity. Eskom monitors this growth carefully and calculates how much capacity is needed to supply this growing demand and maintain its essential reserve capacity. This reserve, designed to cater for unexpected surges in demand, is internationally kept at about 15% of total demand. Eskom's reserve capacity has been reduced from this level to about 8%, which is insufficient for reliable supply.

The Steal or Steele Family

A copy of an autopsy report for Steve Biko was the centre of controversy last week, as an attempt was made to sell it at auction. The document was originally in the possession of Maureen Steele, who had been the personal secretary of Dr Jonathan Gluckman, the pathologist appointed by the Biko family to do an autopsy on Biko after his death in 1977. Steele had reportedly been given the document for safekeeping. Steele died in 2011, and the report passed to her children Clive and Susan Steele, who put it up for auction at the Westgate Walding auction house last week with a reserve price of R70 000 to R100 000. Believing the report to be an original autopsy report, the Biko family and the Steve Biko Foundation filed an urgent court application, which came through an hour before the auction.

Shrien Dewani Goes Free

The NPA thought that they has the Shrien Dewani case all swewn up but  Shrien Dewani dramatically walked free from court after his murder case was thrown out. The 34-year-old had been accused of orchestrating a plot to have his wife Anni Hindocha killed during their honeymoon in 2010. Three men have been convicted of the murder but prosecutor's in South Africa fought for four years to have Dewani extradited to stand trial. But the case faced major problems from the beginning when judge Jeannette Traverso ruled that evidence about Dewani's sexuality was not relevant. After hearing weeks of evidence from Xolile Mngeni, Mziwamadoda Qwabe and Zola Tongo - all convicted over Anni's murder - the defence applied to have the case thrown out. Judge Traverso said the evidence offered by state witnesses - who were all promised reduced sentences for cooperating - was "riddled with contradictions".

Racism in Cape Town Raises Its Ugly Head

Kenilworth swimming school owner Tim Osrin got out of his car and assaulted Cynthia Joni, a domestic worker who was walking to work on October 2. Osrin was subsequently charged with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, but told the Weekend Argus that he was not sure “why he is being victimised”. He has defended his actions by stating that he thought Cynthia was a 'prostitute' and that she has trumped up the charges because he is white. Muhammed Makungwa, a Malawian national, was attacked with a sjambok by a man driving a white BMW X5. Five university students allegedly assaulted a 52-year-old woman in Cape Town. Police are investigating an additional case of assault against three men – one a UCT student – charged with the attempted murder of Claremont cleaner Delia Adonis, who was beaten and racially assaulted in front of her teenage son. A teenage model and UCT student allegedly claimed he came from overseas, his father was rich, and that he didn’t “see anything wrong with urinating on the top of a black person” when he refused to apologise to a Khayelitsha taxi driver for allegedly urinating on his head from the balcony of a Claremont nightclub. He also swore at the driver, Michelle Puis Nomgcana, and called him “stupid”, the driver said on Friday at the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court where the teenager, Djavan Arrigone, 19, was supposed to appear to face charges of assault and crimen injuria.

Jacob Zuma Marks One Year Since Mandela's Death - 6 minutes and 7 seconds

The South African government will lead an international moment of noise and silence on the first anniversary of Nelson Mandela's death. South Africa this week marks the first anniversary of the death of Nelson Mandela with ceremonies that will both mourn and celebrate the first leader of democratic South Africa. President Jacob Zuma hailed Mandela, who died at age 95 on December 5, 2013, for his policy of reconciliation in the racially divided nation. Like many South Africans, Zuma referred to Mandela by his clan name, Madiba. “As we remember Madiba this week, let us do so through recommitting ourselves to advancing his vision of unity, reconciliation, global peace, development, prosperity and a better life for all South Africans,” Zuma said in a statement.
