The Steal or Steele Family
A copy of an autopsy report for Steve Biko was the centre of controversy last week, as an attempt was made to sell it at auction. The document was originally in the possession of Maureen Steele, who had been the personal secretary of Dr Jonathan Gluckman, the pathologist appointed by the Biko family to do an autopsy on Biko after his death in 1977. Steele had reportedly been given the document for safekeeping. Steele died in 2011, and the report passed to her children Clive and Susan Steele, who put it up for auction at the Westgate Walding auction house last week with a reserve price of R70 000 to R100 000. Believing the report to be an original autopsy report, the Biko family and the Steve Biko Foundation filed an urgent court application, which came through an hour before the auction.
