Helen Zille Meltdown in 140 characters
The socially media savvy leader Helen Zille tweets regularly and has had a few memorable spats in the past. But it's been a while since she's really let rip until Sunday (23/2/2014). She launched a surprisingly vitriolic attack on City Press political journalist Carien du Plessis. Helen Zille sent a flurry of tweets to her more than 380 000 Twitter followers. The outbursts from Helen Zille shows that she is a compulsive tweeter who gives little thought to the impact of her public rants — Has Zille misunderstood the meaning of freedom of press? After these run-ins with the media over these tweets, some members of her DA party are questioning her leadership.

Political arty Manifestos - South African Election 2014
Manifestos from the varioius political parties in South Africa. Election manifestos are promises; in many elections, the party with the best promises wins. But there's a caveat: those promises and aspirations should somehow be connected with reality. In South African context, no-one should promise a tender for every home, and get away with it. But you can certainly make people hope and dream. And then get them to vote for you. The ANC's 2014 election manifesto as an interesting mix of all of this, with plenty of spice to make the recipe more appetising - Stephen Grootes

Robert Mugabe's 83rd Birthday
Zimbabwe's Robert Mugabe used his 83rd birthday party to insist his ruling party would remain in control. Thousands of people, including ministers, diplomats and ruling party officials gathered at a soccer stadium in the central town of Gweru for the celebrations, which were billed at more than 1 million dollars. The festivities came at the end of a week of rising tensions as authorities banned rallies across the capital, Harare, following skirmishes between police and opposition supporters last Sunday. "There will never be a regime change," Mugabe said in a speech broadcast live on radio. "There will always be the people of Zimbabwe in control."

China's Industrial Colonialism in Africa
China is exploiting Africa's resources just like European colonisers did, with disastrous effects for the environment, acclaimed primatologist Jane Goodall. Zapiro's cartoon is a parady on the The Tank Man, or the Unknown Protester, which is the nickname of an anonymous man who stood in front of a column of tanks on June 5, 1989, the morning after the Chinese military had suppressed the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989 by force.
