Chicken Kiev - Russian Expansionism Waking Up?
Russia is flexing its muscles in Ukraine, its large and strategically important neighbour, sparking wide-ranging concerns within Europe from Russian expansionism to energy security. Russia looks at Ukraine in the same way that China looks at Taiwan: as an existential issue in which lines must not be crossed. Zapiro uses the Russian bear and and Chicken Kiev to symbolise the situation. The Russian Bear is a widespread symbol for Russia, used in cartoons, articles and dramatic plays since as early as the 17th century, and relating alike to Tsarist Russia, the Soviet Union and the present-day Russian Federation. In the dying days of the Soviet Union, President George H W Bush gave a speech in Kiev urging Ukrainian nationalists not to provoke Moscow. US conservatives dubbed it his “chicken Kiev” speech.
