Our Presidents

Nelson Mandela was the first elected president of democratic South Africa. A hero to all South Africans, The second elected president was Thabo Mbeki, better known as Nelson Mandela's successor than by his own name. South Africans' feelings are strongly divided. Sympathy for, and gratitude to, Mbeki are matched by sentiments that a ruthless, paranoid leader has orchestrated his own fall.  Mbeki's coldness and closedness were supposed to have been defeated by Zuma at the Polokwane leadership contest in 2007: Zuma represented a populist touch Mbeki lacked and, it was alleged, possessed a more caring attitude towards the poorest of the poor – those who have not benefited from the "democracy dividend" that Mandela and his government set in motion.  Jacob Zuma, was elected as third  president. Initially popular,  he has now fallen to the point where he is is in danger of being impeached due to corruption and lack of real leadership.
