Special Screening: Mandela Long Walk to Freedom

It was decades in the making but the long-awaited film based on Nelson Mandela's autobiography is finally here. The film was directed by Justin Chadwick, written by William Nicholson, and produced by Anant Singh. Mandela personally awarded the film rights to the book to Singh's company some years before 2009. Singh believes that as the film is based on Mandela's own writing, it will be the "definitive" biopic of him. In February 2012, English actor Idris Elba signed to portray Mandela in the film. The film is currently set for limited release on November 29, 2013 in the United States. South African actors, politicians and businesspeople and women showed up to watch the film. After the two-and-half hour film ended, people waited outside the main cinema to applaud the cast. Naomie Harris, who plays Mandela's former wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, walked out of the venue holding hands with Madikizela-Mandela herself. Madikizela-Mandela's daughter and granddaughter followed close behind them. The film will be released in South Africa and the United States on November 28 and actor Idris Elba stars in the lead role of Mandela.

Guptagate's Pinocchio

President Jacob Zuma told Parliament this week that he had no idea who "Number One" is, and denied any knowledge that an aircraft chartered by the powerful Gupta family was going to land at the Waterkloof Air Base. According to an affidavit by a senior air force official Christine Anderson, Zuma was involved in the Guptagate debacle and is "Number One".

Egypt: Trials of the Past Presidents

Mohamed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood was voted in as President of Egypt in 2011. On 3 July 2013 he was removed by the military after mass protests. He is considered by most to be the first democratically elected head of state in Egyptian history. Held incommunicado for the four months since his overthrow as president, Mohamed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood walked into a makeshift courtroom this week. for his new role as a defendant in a murder trial. Hosni Mubarak assumed the presidency on 14 October 1981, following the assassination of President Anwar Sadat. His almost thirty-year presidency made him Egypt's longest-serving ruler since Muhammad Ali Pasha. Mubarak stepped down after 18 days of demonstrations during the 2011 Egyptian revolution when, on 11 February 2011, Vice President Omar Suleiman announced that Mubarak had resigned as president and transferred authority to the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces. On 13 April, a prosecutor ordered Mubarak and both of his sons to be detained for 15 days of questioning about allegations of corruption and abuse of power. He was then ordered to stand trial on charges of negligence for not giving orders to stop the killing of peaceful protestors during the revolution. These trials officially began on 3 August 2011. Egypt's military prosecutors then also proclaimed that they were investigating Mubarak's role in the assassination of his predecessor Anwar Sadat.

End of Apartheid Attitudes?

Judge Eben Jordaan has imposed sentences ranging from five to 48 years imprisonment on 19 Boeremag members convicted of high treason. The charge stems from a rightwing plot in the early 2000s to violently overthrow the African National Congress government. He also declared the Boeremag assets, ranging from firearms to vehicles, laptops and GPS devices, forfeited to the State as the proceeds of crime.

Lorgat is sacrificied by Cricket SA

Haroon Lorgat CEO of Cricket SA (CSA)  is sacrificied by CSA to appease the Indian Cricket Board (BCCI). The two countries have agreed that the Indian team will play South Africa in two Test matches and three One-Day International meetings on a tour of the country instead of three Tests and seven one-day games between November and January. Lorgat has also been suspended in any involvment of the tour. Cricket South Africa and the BCCI have been at loggerheads over the proposed Indian tour since CSA released the tour schedule on July 8. The CSA’s appointment of Lorgat on July 20 has also been the cause of consternation in India because of the strained relations he had with the BCCI during his term as ICC chief executive from 2008 to 2012.

The President's PR Man

At a meeting, President Jacob Zuma insinuated that Africans were backward and that they should stop thinking like 'Africans in Africa and accept that Gauteng roads were not like some national road in Malawi ...." Presidential spokesperson Mac Maharaj has apologised for the Malawi comments made by President Jacob Zuma. The apology came as Malawi summoned South Africa's High Commissioner to explain Zuma's comments. Maharaj said. "I have received numerous calls from Malawians being angry and after long discussions, they come around and say, yes, let's not make a mountain of a molehill,". He added "Let me apologise for that and withdraw it,".
