Special Screening: Mandela Long Walk to Freedom

It was decades in the making but the long-awaited film based on Nelson Mandela's autobiography is finally here. The film was directed by Justin Chadwick, written by William Nicholson, and produced by Anant Singh. Mandela personally awarded the film rights to the book to Singh's company some years before 2009. Singh believes that as the film is based on Mandela's own writing, it will be the "definitive" biopic of him. In February 2012, English actor Idris Elba signed to portray Mandela in the film. The film is currently set for limited release on November 29, 2013 in the United States. South African actors, politicians and businesspeople and women showed up to watch the film. After the two-and-half hour film ended, people waited outside the main cinema to applaud the cast. Naomie Harris, who plays Mandela's former wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, walked out of the venue holding hands with Madikizela-Mandela herself. Madikizela-Mandela's daughter and granddaughter followed close behind them. The film will be released in South Africa and the United States on November 28 and actor Idris Elba stars in the lead role of Mandela.
