I have a Dream - 50 years On

50 years ago in August 1963, Dr King, the Baptist preacher and civil rights leader, drew the largest crowd the country had witnessed as he delivered the rousing call for racial equality that reverberates to this day. Barack Obama, was voted in as President of the United States in 2008 on an anti-war mongering ticket. Five years on, the USA is still in a similar position as it was during the Bush years. Obama is now the leader of a nation about to launch military action in Syria, not the outspoken anti-war champion of a mass civil rights movement. It seems a contradiction that Obama speech to celebrate "I Have a Dream" speech on a day dominated by rumors of war. An armed conflict with the Syrian government, even of limited duration, was never part of Obama's dream.

Pansy Tlakula Found Guilty of Maladminstration

Protector Thuli Madonsela finds Pansy Tlakula, head of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) guilty of maladministration and misconduct over the IEC's acquisition of a new R320-million office in Centurion. According to Madonsela, the process was "irregular … and violated procurement rules". Tlakula had not followed "her own commissions procurement policy", by running the procurement process herself instead of leaving it to the relevant departments. The problem in the lease came down to an "undisclosed conflict of interest" between Tlakula and businessperson Thaba Mufamadi, who has an ownership stake in the property through his company.

Zuma Spy Tapes Appeal

Jacob Zuma's lawyers have appealed the North Gauteng High Court decision forcing the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to hand over the so-called spy tapes within 5 days arguing that the tapes, interceptions of telephone conversations between former NPA head Bulelani Ngcuka and Scorpions boss Leonard McCarthy, were "part and parcel" of confidential representations made by Zuma to the NPA. These confidential representations are protected and cannot be disclosed. Zuma’s lawyer, Michael Hulley, says the grounds for appeal are that Judge Rami Mathopo "erred" in 18 instances when he ruled the NPA must produce the tapes within five days. The tape transcripts and other documents relate to an NPA decision in 2009 to drop fraud and corruption charges against Zuma by then acting National Prosecuting Authority head Mokotedi Mpshe. The opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) party have brought the issue of making the so-called spy tapes public in order to know whether the decision by the NPA to drop the charges against Zuma was politically motivated.

Two New TV Channels on Subscription Based DsTV

South Africa's newest 24-hour news channel is Africa News Network (ANN7).  ANN7 has become nicknamed "Gupta TV”  because it is owned by the powerful Gupta family. President Jacob Zuma’s son Duduzane is the key BEE partner. SABC the public broadcaster has also recently launched a new 24 hour news service known as SABC 24. Both channels are seen as propaganda outlets fot the present day ANC government. Both are considered to be very boring.

Will Dina Pule Go to Jail?

The report of the multi-party Joint Committee on Ethics and Members Interests on complaints against the former Minister of Communications of Dina Pule, was unanimously adopted by the National Assembly. As per the recommendation of the Ethics Committee, the harshest punishment that Parliament is allowed by law, was handed down. Dina Pule received a reprimand from the Speaker, will receive a 30-days' salary equivalent fine, and 15-days' suspension from all the parliamentary committees. Pule rose from her seat in the back benches and offered a brief apology. “I want to say to this House that I gave the best I could do to do my job, and that if in the course of me doing my job I made a mistake, I am sorry, I apologise.” Despite this unanimity, ANC members immediately appeared to unite around Pule as formal proceedings ended

Manto's Missing Medical Records

Health Minister approaches Johannesburg High Court to vindicate her rights to her medical records. The legal team representing the Minister of Health, Dr Manto Tshabalala-Msimang and Medi-Clinic today lodged an urgent application with the Johannesburg High Court to compel the Sunday Times to return the copies of the medical records concerning her two admissions at Cape Town Medi-Clinic. The application comes after the Sunday Times refused to comply with the letter of demand from the Minister's lawyers calling upon the newspaper to return these documents on Tuesday. A criminal case of theft has been lodged by Medi-Clinic with the Cape Town police, after the clinic discovered that the documents had been stolen from their archives. The Sunday Times publicly admitted in its edition of the 12 of August 2007 that it was in possession of these documents. The newspaper wrote in its front-page story that: "the Sunday Times is in possession of documents related to Tshabalala-Msimang's two hospital stays in 2005." It further stated in the article that these medical files were given to unnamed doctors to assess for the Sunday Times.

Marikana Anniversary

It is a year since the killing of 34 striking miners by police at the Lonmin mine (Marikana). South African miners returned to a rocky outcrop outside the town of Marikana to commemorate the 34 of their striking colleagues killed by police on the 16th August 2012. The event has been overshadowed by bitter squabbles between rival unions and political parties. The anniversary is seen as a turning point in the country's modern history, the view is that nothing has changed. The disastercan be compared with the Sharpeville massacre of 1960 and the 1976 Soweto uprising, but this disaster is considered as the first "democratic massacre".
