Zimbabwian Democracy and the AU

President Robert Mugabe unilaterally announced July 31 as the date for Zimbabwe’s next national election, placing him at loggerheads with Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, his partner in a shaky four-year-old coalition government. Rather than negotiating with his MDC coalition partners for an election date, President Robert Mugabe is still ruling by decree with a unilateral declaration of the July 31 election date shows. The Zanu (PF) is still using its state-owned propaganda machine to distort information and undermine its partners in the unity government. It is still using the courts to support favoured outcomes. Election registration is encountering delays in urban areas, traditionally a stronghold for the opposition parties. Non-African countries offering observer missions are not being accepted. Zimbabwe's Constitutional Court ordered Mugabe two weeks ago to hold the poll by the end of July, but Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai has rejected his rival's declaration, saying it was too early and accusing him of creating a political crisis. African Union Commission Chairwoman Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, speaking at a press conference in Geneva, questioned whether it was right to second-guess Zimbabwe's courts. She said "The courts have said the elections must take place. And so do we listen to the courts? Or do we not listen to the courts? I thought a lot of you have always been talking to us about the rule of law and respect for the judiciary," - "So I don't know. The Zimbabweans must sort it out, whether they listen to the judiciary and go with what the judiciary has said, or whether they ignore it."

Angie's Racist Rant

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga has come under fire for a “racist attack” by her department on advocacy group Equal Education. "Suddenly the NGO knows all about the challenges that African children face," "To suddenly see a group of white adults organising black African children with half-truths can only be opportunistic, patronising and simply dishonest to say the least"- Ministery of Basic Education

Tata Mandela

A Nation Prays for ‘Tata’ as hope grows for his recovery. Tata is the isiXhosa word meaning "father" and is a term of endearment that many South Africans use for Mr Mandela. Since he is a father figure to many, they call him Tata regardless of their own age. Scores of people have been stopping by the Mediclinic Heart Hospital to wish him well, including a group of hymn singers, who say they’ll continue singing and praying for Madiba as long as he remains in the facility.

World and South Africa's anxiety as Nelson Mandela Lies in Hospital

As Nelson Mandela, spends his fifth day in Pretoria’s Mediclinic Heart Hospital, South Africans’ alarm at his sudden decline has given way to a concern to preserve the dignity of a man who, to so many, represents the best of them and of all humanity. So deep is the affection in South Africa for Nelson Mandela, that the thought of his passing seems incomprehensible.

Edward Snowden: the man who blew the whistle

Edward Snodden is the man responsible for what The Guardian calls "one of the most significant leaks in US political history". According to Snowden, the NSA are intent on making every conversation and every form of behaviour in the world known to them. Giving the reason, why he blew the whistle, he said "I can't in good conscience allow the US government to destroy privacy, internet freedom and basic liberties for people around the world with this massive surveillance machine they're secretly building."
