Zimbabwe Elections - AU Deja Vue
The African Union represented by former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo, said the Zimbabwean presidential, parliamentary and local elections held on July 31 were a big improvement on the 2008 polls and voting was conducted in "an atmosphere devoid of violence, harassment and disturbances" resulting in what he called a peaceful, orderly and free and fair vote.

Lady Freedom Wins Over Narrow-minded FPB Decision
The Appeals Committee of The Film and Publications Board overturns the FPB’s original decision not to classify the film "Of Good Report". The classification is now 16SNVL (Sex, Nudity, Violence and Language) which means anyone over 16 can see it without the fear of prosecution. The FPB may yet decide to appeal its own appeals process to re-ban the film.

Mugabe party (Zanu-PF) claims 7th Zimbabwe election victory. MDC cries foul. While Voting was peaceful across the southern African nation, the conflicting claims heralded an acrimonious dispute over the outcome that will increase the chances of a repeat of the violence that followed a contested vote in 2008. The 89-year-old Mugabe is Africa's oldest leader and is running for office for the seventh and perhaps final time. His rival Morgan Tsvangirai hopes the election will usher in a new era for the troubled southern African nation.

Vavi's Extra-marital Indiscretion
Zwelinzima Vavi has an extra-marital affair with a Cosatu employee, which gives his enemies more fuel to put on the fire. Daily Maverick reports that there is absolutely no doubt that Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi has fierce and powerful enemies. There is also no doubt that there was sexual intercourse between him and an employee of the trade union federation. The woman claims it was rape and allegedly demanded R2 million from him; he claims it was a romantic relationship. As the scandal unfolds, Vavi’s political future hangs on whose version prevails and the strategy he adopts to fight off the latest allegation against him. But Vavi has effectively handed his enemies a loaded gun and, not surprisingly, they are aiming for his head.

Movie 'of Good Report' Banned
Classifiers at the Film and Publications Board (FPB) ban a movie which would have been shown at the Durban Film Festival. The board said the film, titled “Of Good Report” contained child pornography and contravened their code of publication. The movie depicts the sexual relationship between a male teacher and one of his pupils. The FPB only watched 28 minutes of a 104 minute film. According to Pierre De Vos, Professor of Law at UCT, they ignored Constitutional jurisprudence on the classification of "child pornography" as well as the decisions of the Film and Publications Review Board. He feels they are ignorant of the law in terms of which they must exercise their powers, or because they decided to be guided by a misplaced, conservative, moralistic fervour -- rather than by the law that they are bound by.

King Dalindyebo joins the DA
In 2009, the Eastern Cape High Court in Mthatha convicted King Dalindyebo of 10 crimes, including arson, culpable homicide, the kidnapping of a woman and her six children, defeating the course of justice and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. In 2013, the King announced his decision to join the Democratic Alliance, denouncing Zuma as a "Zulu boy". DA Eastern Cape leader Athol Trollip said that he was very proud to welcome the king and DA spokesman Mmusi Maimane tweeted that Dalindyebo’s move to join the party was a "symbolism of our politics". In the past, the DA has been the greatest political advocate against crime and corruption, yet it has pursued and secured the membership of a convicted criminal. Is this opportunism?
