Arms Inquiry Adjourned

The Arms Deal has dominated South African politics for over a decade. The start of the first judicial investigation into the multibillion-rand agreement since corruption allegations first emerged in 1999, should have started on the 5th August after already being delayed by 4 months. Instead it has been postponed to the 19th August 2013 to resolve to see whether the commission could continue with just two commissioners, among other issues over confidentiality of documents. A potential breach of national security could sink the arms deal commission of inquiry before it even begins. The issue of the declassification of thousands of documents related to the 1998 arms procurement deal was raised again by lawyers for the Defence Department. The commission's evidence leaders apparently do not have the security clearances they need to examine classified documents.
