Police Brutality an Exception?
Despite calls from National Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa for the country's police to not resort to violence when making arrests, yet another case of police brutality has occurred, this time in the Northwest Province. Mthethwa said the recent alleged police brutality incident in the North West was an embarrassment to the police service. MPs from across the political divide have reacted angrily to a new outrage involving the South African Police Service and are demanding both Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa and National Commissioner General Riah Phiyega be held to account.

Know Your Clowns
Behaviour by the SABC Board is like behaviour of clowns. SABC board chairman Ben Ngubane and his deputy, Thami ka Plaatjie, resigned from the board once again throwing the beleaguered broadcaster into turmoil thus creating an "untenable" situation. Their resignations followed weeks of tension at the public broadcaster, with the board failing to agree on the future of acting chief operating officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng.

Dirk Coetzee Dies
Dirk Coetzee was co-founder and commander of the covert South African Police unit based at Vlakplaas. He and his colleagues were involved in a number of atrocities including the murders of Sizwe Khondile and Griffiths Mxenge. was granted amnesty by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission for murder, has died of kidney failure. He admitted the existence of Vlakplaas in 1989 and admitted that his organization detained and killed many members of the African National Congress (ANC) in an interview with a liberal Afrikaans newspaper, "Vrye Weekblad ". As a result, he took refuge in London and went into exile. In 1997, Eugene de Kock, another former commander of Vlakplaas, was convicted for attempting to kill Coetzee. Bizarrely, while in exile, Coetzee joined the ANC and expressed his support for Nelson Mandela. After Mandela became president of South Africa in 1994, Coetzee joined the new administration as a top spy. However he never ever apologised for his heinous deeds such as "Coetzee burnt the bodies to ashes on a fire of wood and tyres" in order to make them disappear. Pauw ex-editor of Vrye Weekblad reports in his book “Coetzee was never driven by remorse at all, and it is important to note that. There was no remorse for the people he had killed. In fact, Coetzee’s best years were at Vlakplaas. It was the highlight of his life.”

Hugo Chavez Obituary
Zapiro cartoon on obituary of Hugo Chavez - controversial and not liked by the western world President of Venezuela, who often chided the United States and especially George W Bush.
Chavez may have passed away, but some of these quotes will definitely live on!
* On George W Bush:
“The Devil is right at home. The Devil, the Devil himself, is right in the house. And the Devil came here yesterday. Yesterday the Devil came here. Right here. [crosses himself] And it smells of sulphur still today. Yesterday, ladies and gentlemen, from this rostrum, the president of the United States, the gentleman to whom I refer as the Devil, came here, talking as if he owned the world. Truly. As the owner of the world”, he said in a famous speech to the UN general assembly in 2006.
In another speech in Venezuela, he described the former US President as a donkey. “You are ignoramus, you are a burro, Mr Danger… or to say it to you in my bad English: [switching languages] You are a donkey, Mr Danger. You are a donkey, Mr George W Bush.”

SAPS - Licence to Kill?
In South Africa, the police have a culture of violence and impunity. In Daveyton, a Mozambican taxi driver Mido Macia died in police custody after being dragged behind a police vehicle. In Marikana, the police massacred 34 striking miners. In Ficksburg, an innocent protestor, Andries Tatane, was killed and in Cato Manor, 28 police officers face a string of charges, ranging from murder to racketeering. In all these places the police acted with excessive brute force, where they believe that they are not accountable to the law. While all this goes on the police minister Nathi Mthethwa and police commissioner Riah Phiyega remain in charge. In any civil society, they would have resigned.
