Human Rights Day 2007

In 2007, South Africa took up a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council. Many hoped this platform would provide an opportunity for the country to exercise its commitment to defend human rights in the world’s highest chamber. Alas, this was not to be. Although claiming to be concerned with events in Zimbabwe and Burma, South African officials resorted to technical arguments to prevent it from taking a stand on some issues. The tension between a commitment to human rights and the defence of South Africa’s national interest remains a bone of contention between those charged with making foreign policy and the country’s often vocal human rights activists.
