Vol. 234, No. 789
Happy Beautiful Surreal April:
I figure all you guys are leading the way. How, you ask? Really soon now, when people have exhausted all the movies and TV shows they can tolerate, here's where you'll point the way out of entertainment despair: You will preach to all family and friends you call and email every day and inform them the way to incredible entertainment and distraction is……. TA DA! …..READING BOOKS. You will encourage everyone to order books on line, or ebooks (instant gratification). Remind them of the book they've been meaning to read but haven't had the time.
You come right out and lead the charge. Suggest everyone interested start a Quarantine Book Club. Take turns selecting a book, everyone reads the books, then get together on Zoom and discuss what everyone thought.
Between books, do me a favor, please: Go online and check out the cover for the next FBI thriller, DEADLOCK. And let me know what you think.
Never forget, our minds do not have to shelter in place.

Friday 17th April. There are a lot of comments either for or against measures being taken in primarily Michigan— whatever your opinion, the way to be heard is to email, call your state legislators and your senators and your representatives and your mayors. I understand that what’s happening in certain area makes you crazy, but listen — let’s try here to encourage each other, share what is positive, allow each other to commiserate when you’re having issues, and above all, support each other in this unchartered surreal time. My goal for all of us is to come out the other side grateful we’re alive. Oh yes, this is a park in Sausalito, the elephants given to the San Francisco World’s Fair by Chili in 1912. It’s Friday, rejoice, we’re getting better as a country, we’re all taking care, being smart, and finding joy in things we perhaps never even noticed before.

Thursday, 16th April -- Looking into a gray sky, which, usually, burns away by 11:00 a.m. It will be a glorious day -- yes, yes, I spoke to the weather minions and they promised me. If you've been in the middle of tornadoes, high winds, storms, whatever nature has to throw at you -- just know that so many are praying for you and have all digits crossed. Hang in there.
If you live in Michigan, what is your opinion of what is going on there? If you do not live in Michigan, what do you think?
Okay, remember, exercise lightens depression and black thoughts and foul moods and brings not only equilibrium but also burns calories and makes you gorgeous -- now isn't that a great deal?
I'll be reading all your comments but I'm running late and have to get to work. Great active day --

Wednesday, 15th April -- I'll be writing the April Newsletter today, so hopefully it will begin showing up in a couple of days.
Yesterday was a "stroll", not a hike, very flat bike trail along the Bay in Belvedere and Tiburon -- hasn't been closed like everything else, not sure why. But it was beautiful and got the bod moving for a couple of miles.
One of you talked about a friend who wore a mask in the house to keep food out of her mouth. Now, that's a novel idea. I wonder if it works, maybe so.
Make a point today of calling or emailing at least 3 family or friends, check on them, you want them to know you care and you're thinking of them. I have to remind myself, it's so easy to forget as one day sort of blends into the next -- CALL OR EMAIL, okay?
VORTEX, the 25th FBI, is coming right along. I'm doing too much editing, going over and over and making improvements as I think of things to add or change, but the fact is a writer has to write and that means producing new pages every day. So, I have to yell at myself.
Everyone, outside if at all possible. Nice out? But you have some physical problems? Sit on a chair in the back yard, sun on your face -- that's a good thing.

Tuesday, 14th April -- Beautiful day in the neighborhood, which means a nice long walk today -- yesterday, we walked down the hill into Sausalito. There were maybe a total of 15 people about, wearing masks, everyone half-a-road apart. It was great to see things on foot rather than from the car. You see buildings/houses so differently. And, and up close and personal with the Bay, it was amazing. Are you finding this to be true as well? You see new things when you're out walking around?
I swear to you, I absolutely swear to you, that exercise makes you feel better. It also allows you to eat a bit more without getting heavy, and that's a good deal, right? So if the weather is okay, get outside and walk -- do everything you're supposed to go, but get outside and walk or jog or run or dance -- your choice. I know some states have gone over the edge with rules and regulations, or perhaps where you are they've gone the other way -- obviously you have to obey the leader(s) you elected state/locally-- if you're in a very strict area, then stay in your yard and do jumping jacks, wave your arms, use free weights -- at least you're outside, run around the yard with your dog, and that's what's important. Heads up, people, we're moving forward, slowly, but forward.
Lighten up the day for a second or two: I need to practice social distancing from the refrigerator.

Sunday, 12th April. HAPPY EASTER, EVERYONE. What an extraordinary Easter this is, watching the streaming services on the computer. But you know what? It still made my heart calm, and made me feel connected to something outside myself, something greater and more profound. When the service ended I felt blessed and I felt an immense surge of hope.
I pray most of you share these same feelings today, not only here in the U.S. but everywhere in our world. I look at what the U.S. clergy did today in Japan and marvel at us, our ingenuity and our drive, our wonderful minds and actions ---- People parked in huge lots, listening to an Easter service, and given drive- through communion.
You, me, all of us, we worship however we can, in whatever way we chose, and I believe we share with each other a brief unbreakable bond that pulls us together as one, and that bond, for me, is grounded in shared hope and optimism. Do you think that feeling of hope is what people felt, for example, in London, in the second world war? I believe endless hope and resolve made them fight on, just as we will fight on against this unseen enemy. We are strong, we will never give up, and you know what? Our hope and optimism, our incredible humanness, makes us really quite awesome. We will fight on. We will win.
It doesn't matter if you don't celebrate Easter, I'm hopeful the unity of the day will give your spirits a lift, perhaps make you calm and steadier, more resolved to face whatever tomorrow brings.

GOOD FRIDAY, 10th April -- Thank you for all your well wishes for my knee -- I'm going to try to hike today -- on FLAT ground -- if such a thing is possible in the wilderness.
I'm really enjoying all the pet photos -- MORE, PLEASE. And all animal personalities are different from each other. It's amazing, just like people.
I haven't yet answered all your comments, but I'll get to them this afternoon -- I really have to get my butt to work -- running a bit on the late side.
All of you sound like you're hanging in there, you're doing stuff you never do normally, and really important: try to be extra kind to those in living with you. Everyone is under tremendous stress -- do not add to it with impatience or anger. Kindness is the only key -- and it's hard to remember when you want to smack someone or throw something. Here's what you do: Take a deep breath -- it makes your brain turn on the pause button -- then force a smile. Make it as real as you can and you'll see, a smile is disarming, a smile makes you feel virtuous and lowers your blood pressure. Keep calm and be kind -- your watchwords. We'll all get through this (and yes, I really try to heed my own advice -- and I know it's tough, believe me, believe me) Trying times, but again, we can do it.
Funny for the day: Half of us are going to come out of this quarantine as amazing cooks. The other half will come out with a drinking problem.

Monday, 6th April -- I gave it a lot of thought about driving any distance, rather than simply staying local -- Megan's right, it's a risk, an unnecessary risk -- if you stay local, and you have problems, you can just walk home -- So thank you, made me realize driving any distance for an outing ain't smart.
Thank you for all the Easter Services online. I think I'm going with Cardinal Timothy Dolan.
Everyone knows, since we have instant communication, this is supposed to be the very worst week, so please, wear MASKS if you step outside your door, and disposable gloves -- Let's all hang really close this week.
Watch movies, read books, run up and down stairs, pedal on your stationery bikes, use your green stretchy bands, bis and tris in front of the bathroom mirrors, and call and email all friends, family, hey, even some enemies, it'll be a good thing and who know what would happen?
Let's get through this week, all of us upbeat. The end is in nearly in sight

Friday, 3rd April -- Okay, some of you told me about doing something that made you happen, so that's a start.
Now, that gorgeous tree photo I posted -- We have a majority voting for cherry, a very good number voting for Dogwood and a couple voting Bradford pear -- and some suggested ones I never would have thought of. So, it's time for me to do a bit of research -- If I do it, I'll let you know and post a photo.
I've asked several of you who are making masks to tell me how they're doing it. I'll post it -- Also, I'm sure if you simply Google it, it'll all be there -- would a homemade mask be 100% effective? Of course not, but even just a little helps keep you and your family safe. Like I pull my shirt over my nose/mouth when passing another on a hiking trail. It's something -- and that's better than nothing.
Beautiful Friday here in Sausalito. Hiking today, but haven't decided where yet. All of you who can SAFELY, get out there on trails or in a park or where there are next to no people, and enjoy the fresh air and know you're getting more fit and thus stronger, and that's super important, particularly now.

Thursday, 2nd April -- Okay, sit down right this minute, have a cup of coffee or tea (if it's early, no vodka) -- and ask yourself: What one thing am I going to do today to make me happy? To make me feel accomplished? To make me feel at ease and settled? Tell me what you come up with. To be honest here, I haven't thought of anything spectacular to do to make me want to dance on the ceiling, but right now, I'm going to come up with something. Do tell us what you come up with, particularly if it's really cool.
A reader sent me a video -- older woman, MRS. HUGHES -- comedytime.tv -- it was short and very very funny. I'm going to see if I can't find her on Roku -- you too. If you find her, see if you think she's as funny as I did and post it here for everyone, okay?
I posted a photo yesterday, but the sucker didn't show up -- I'll try again. It gives me pleasure to make this record of daily outings and share them with you.
Tighten down the hatches, people -- whenever you're outside, even if you're eight feet away from another person, either wear a mask (obviously you can't buy one, so make one, or tie a bandanna over your mouth and nose, or simply pull your shirt over your nose and mouth until you're well clear. (that's what I do when out hiking) Try to to buy two weeks groceries at a time, better yet, order online -- Okay, I'll stop blathering -- all of you already know this, probably better than I do.
Today is going to be a good day. We're alive, we're being careful, and each of us is going to come up with one thing to do to make us really happy.

Halloween's coming up fast, the day the zombies burst out of the ground and terrify the crap out of us, not to mention eat our candy and eat our brains.
Update on BOMBSHELL, the 17th FBI Thriller: I'm nearly finished with the edit. The cover is very cool, explodes with eye-popping color. BOMBSHELL is set in Maestro, Va., (the setting of the 10th FBI thriller, POINT BLANK) and in Washington.
JEWEL OF THE LION (first thriller in A Brit in the FBI series partnered with J.T. Ellison). JEWEL moves fast and you don't know what's going to happen on the next page, and you're biting your toenails or a zombie's toenails. J.T. is an excellent plotter and that means when we brainstorm no plot gets left behind.
Alas, no kids want candy enough to crawl up our oxygen-deprived steep driveway, and the sad thing is, I still have a big bowl of candy, every year, but no one comes, not even the zombies with brain bags.
Take care, Catherine
