Friday, 19th June -- You should all be getting the June newsletter today or tomorrow -- if you don't, be sure to check your spam.
Great hike yesterday, the first third nearly straight up -- well, okay, not quite that bad, but lots of steps, then a bit of flat, then LOTS more steps and back and forth to the top of Spencer Ridge. Then the gorgeous walk through the eucalyptus forest to a fire road up to the top of yet a higher ridge (yep, all uphill) with views from the ocean, Rodeo Beach, the incredible Marin headlands to San Francisco coast to the city and all the way to Oakland. I'm posting the video today. You stand there looking at the crazy gorgeousness and are grateful you're alive and able to see it.
It's the end of the week yet again -- which means it's fun night in our household. No worries, no telling Alexa to set the alarm, eating Pistachios (unshelled and salted) and trying to find a comedian we like and haven't seen before.
Gym, of course, from noon to noon forty-five and of course climbing on the bike (while watching Warrior play-offs -- only when they won, of course, which in the past 5 years has been most of the time).
What are you guys up to this very fine evening? After your walk, what will happen? A BBQ in the backyard, maybe a backyard hair cut, maybe a chat over the fence with neighbors?
Still trying to find a series I like. Does anyone have any great programs/series to recommend?
Out and walk on this lovely Friday -- and don't forget, SBB --

June 18, 2020

Thursday, 18th June -- Gonna be REALLY hot here today in weather-perfect Sausalito -- well, wrong about that. 78 degrees. You're calling me nuts and a wuss, I can hear you -- but think about this -- every mile you go north from that 78 degrees, it get at least a degree hotter -- so you drive 15 miles north and you're talking really serious heat and no one wants to hike in that. So, really, I'm not a wuss, maybe.
Newsletter -- I swear it'll be off today.
Don't forget now: DEADLOCK is out July 28th -- and no, I haven't yet seen the book -- but given the situation I suppose I have to be understanding. I hope you've pre-ordered a signed copy from Barnes & Noble, otherwise, if you want me to sign a book to you, you'll have to mail it to me, okay?
Today, work, then guess what? The dentist -- regular check up, nothing hairy, close to a zero on the misery index. They've got this huge protocol in place, and now I'm part of it.

All of you continue to be careful and please don't forget, nothing has changed, the virus is still here and happy to visit you, so be smart and be careful. Walk, people, walk.

June 17, 2020

Wednesday, 17th June -- All right, the newsletter isn't done yet -- sorry, but there were problems yesterday and the newsletter didn't get finished. Today, I promise.
It's going to be HOT here today, 78 degrees -- yes, I know, you think that's wonderful, but it really isn't. It's an OVEN, it's Sahara weather, it's frying an egg on the sidewalk HOT -- Have I convinced all of you who live in say Phoenix that I'm in one of the outer circles of Hell?

Basketball: -- who knows what's going to happen? So much to think about, so much to agree on, I wish the players would talk about what they're thinking about all this "bubble" stuff, self-quarantining, being alone in your hotel room -- We'll see.
Walk yesterday (maybe a mile) and today, with this ghastly HEAT, it'll be less, you can be sure of that. But where you are, it'll be perfect, even if you have to WALK before sun-up or after sundown -- the important thing for your brain, for your body for your weight -- get out there and WALK -- I lie to you not, this is one major thing you can do to help yourself come through all this in good shape.
It's 100 degrees? Okay, then AC in your house and walk those stairs -- 12 times up and down --

June 16, 2020

Tuesday, 16th June -- Do expect the June newsletter on say Thursday. And let me know if you don't get it by Friday -- gorgeous day here in Sausalito, perfect for working and eating and nice long walks, and don't forget playing with Peyton and Eli who aren't hiking with us and thus putting on a few ounces. I hate to be the one to cut them back, they look at me like I'm Torquemada from the Spanish Inquisition.
Getting manicure/pedicure today out on the deck in the lovely fresh air -- it's supposed to be 70 degrees, which is just about perfect. Toes are twitching in anticipation.
Don't forget -- SBB -- always -- and if you have stairs climb them up and down -- great for the butt (for both guys and gals). How are things going in your area? Is everyone paying attention?
Don't you guys forget, there's absolutely no change until we have a vaccine --so continue to be as careful as you can --

June 15, 2020

Monday, 15th June -- Listen, guys: Our Covid cases are up in Marin County (Not a whole lot, but still) and that's because things are open and people feel it must be over. It's not. Nothing has changed, not until we have a vaccine -- there are currently 3 or 4 being tested -- all digits crossed one of them is the answer.
Yesterday walked and climbed like a fool with the result today I woke up and the top back of my legs were screaming obscenities at me. I love Aleve -- talk about a miracle drug (at least for me).
Was everyone out and about yesterday? Lots of talking and laughing and trying to put all the stuff currently going on in the background for a while? I hope so --

Who thinks there'll be basketball to polish off the 2019 season? No, sorry, I don't know, I'm casting among you guys, see if you have some good info.

Got a good idea about VORTEX, will write the scene this morning -- Everyone, get out there and WALK -- whistling is also good, keeps your mood moving toward the high end. If you are depressed (and that's certainly understandable) you need family. If not family, then you get on one the myriad help lines advertised on TV -- do not try to make a go of it on your own. I mean, Why? Help is always the best thing --

June 12, 2020

FRIDAY (YEA!!), 12th June -- Walked/hiked too much yesterday and my bod finally said, stop it, woman, a day of rest of we'll go on strike. So, today, some upper body work, and that's it. No, I'm not whining -- but boy, exhausted legs aren't good. (Okay, a little whimper)

You know how I'm preaching how you need a schedule and you need to contact friends/family, check in and chat? Well, how about this -- Pick a time every day when you will text, email, call friends/family/ -- 15 minutes? 30 minutes? Stick to the time you pick, make it more or less, depending on what you want, then STICK TO IT. And you'll feel so virtuous and probably happy because everyone you texted, emailed, spoke to on the phone were so pleased to hear from you --

VORTEX -- I told you about the small third plot -- well, I know who did it, Sherlock knows who did it and she'll get the final evidence to nail the person BUT the question always was in my own mind, WHY? What's the motive? Not the obvious motive, but the real reason for the murders? GOT IT FIGURED OUT -- very cool. Well, I think so, have to wait a year to see what you guys think.

Friday is a day you need to go out, unlike me, who really really needs to cool it for a day -- anyway, you go out, a nice walk, maybe have lunch at your favorite restaurant, chat with your waiters, with people sitting around you, maybe even a margarita, you know, one large enough so you feel like you can stand on the rim and dive right in -- drink your way out --

June 11, 2020

Thursday, 11th June -- Beautiful, sunny and (thankfully) cooler here today in Sausalito -- high of 72, I believe. Thank you, weather minions, thank you.
Walked to Fort Baker yesterday -- really gorgeous, stopped and took the picture of Angel Island with speed boat -- I took a couple more of the GG Bridge that are pretty spectacular. 5 miles in all -- phew!!!! Sore hamstrings and I wouldn't have been surprised if my feet hadn't rebelled and said enough, stop it, you fool. Bed felt good for spirit and all body parts. Yes, okay, more today, always, no choice. It's a blessing to be outside, suck in the fresh air, forget for a little while all the bad stuff surrounding us, waving to other walker/hikers, chatting a bit, petting dogs -- all of it helps normalize your brain (at least it does mine). It also gets you out of yourself, and your focus on yourself, which is very important.

Make three phone calls today to friends/family -- check in, chat, see what's going on with them. Family/friends bring up any political crap, my firm recommendation, is to excuse yourself 'gotta go, postman here, packages' and get outside and let the summer air clear out your brain of all negative stuff.

Don't forget: SBB!!!! particularly when you're walking/hiking.

June 10, 2020

Wednesday, 10th June -- Well, the computer decided I was a loser this morning and didn't turn on. After mumbling, cursing (Yes, I admit it) and a couple of yells, I figured out the problem and rebooted it. And guess what? I KNOW this, but always forget -- any problem with any technology (like my iPad), it screws up? JUST TURN IT OFF and it will right itself. So, HELLO COMPUTER -- at last.
I'll read all your comments later as time is flying past and I have to get my butt to work. Hot here today, well, 77 degrees in Sausalito, but up north you could roast sweet potatoes, fry an egg or two on a random sidewalk-- but don't forget the salt and pepper, on both.
The Cantina -- lunch yesterday -- it was wonderful. Imagine not eating your own cooking. We ate outside, all good care taken, plus your very own condiments (you know, in the small packets) -- all wait staff in masks and you wear masks except at the table. Social distancing wasn't a problem either. So, get out there to lunch -- if everyone is super careful, there's no reason why not. Plus it's so nice to TALK to people --
Outside, folk, outside -- yep, to lunch, then a nice long lovely walk, or wait until evening and the sun won't roast you -- but move --

June 8, 2020

Monday, 8th June -- Do you know, the weekend zoomed by faster than the week -- now that's amazing, feels so fast time should be stopping or maybe even a bit backward. So many of you are having fun, with and without family -- but doing things that keep your grounded, your brain unstressed, and most of all you are getting out there and walking -- best thing for stress other than Hummingbird cake or strawberry ice cream or Sloppy Joes or -- goodness, I could keep going for a very long time -- bet you could too.
In your individual areas, has the virus spiked with opening or not?
NYC, I hear, is opening up a big -- interesting to hear what will happen.
Monday is comforting -- it's a return to the rock-steady routine -- I hope all of you have established a schedule, keeps you from getting in a funk or being hazy about what day it is -- if this happens to you -- SCHEDULE and stick to it and be productive -- and every single day, you head out for your walk/hike/run -- well, given where you live, it could be the same time every day, but not always. You see what I mean? Do you agree?
HUGE hike yesterday -- a trail we've never done -- I'll post a video of Bon Tempe lake/dam and Lake Alpine -- anyway, if only a trail would show you what it's really like a straight line -- but no, they suck you in, nice and flat, barely a slope, then WHAP -- four miles of straight up hill with so many curves you think it's nearly over. Doing a trail we know is fairly tame today -- And you, Beautiful Fit Folk?

June 5, 2020

Friday, 5th June -- End of the week, yet again -- Do you know, I used to keep count, like "week 4, week 5" etc. But no longer. I think we began lockdown the middle of March -- How about you guys? Is this simply your way of life now or are you still counting weeks?
I would like to see photos of you guys -- prove to me you're working out, walking, not eating the house -- I want to see how fit you are, how healthy you look -- please, I simply can't emphasize this enough -- and those around you -- keep them on the straight and narrow -- with you.
VORTEX -- I'm doing lots of editing, going back to make sure I'm going in the right direction on two of the three mysteries. Yep, I added a "small" Sherlock mystery -- had to give her an excuse to be in New York (without Savich) -- It will come -- I just let things stew in the back of my brain -- what there is left of it.
All of you, enjoy today, I mean, why not? You have a routine, you know what to expect, you'e taking good care of yourself and your family. There's no reason at all not to have fun even doing the same things every day (HINT: like hiking, walking, biking, skipping, climbing up and down stairs) Do get stretch bands -- you want to work your upper body --
